I love running with my dogs! I also work for an emergency vet, and we see heat stroke when it's in the 80s, even when dogs were just walked and not ran. Sure, some of these dogs were not in as good of shape as yours, but I would still be very careful. If treated quickly, we see a high survival rate, but this can definitely…

I was given a spice mix called za'atar that I really like on roast chicken: oregano, thyme, salt, fennel, sumac, sesame seeds

I put your stats in here: http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/ I selected "no exercise" because you're not really burning much more standing up than you are sitting down, and it guesses you're burning around 2200 per day, so if you eat 2500 you would gain weight. I'm about your weight, and I'm losing on 2100 per day (I also…

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure This is how many calories you are actually "burning" during the whole day. There are lots of online calculators that can get you close, but the only way to know for sure is by logging accurately, charting your weight change and doing the math. If you gained a stone in a year, that…

We are at similar weights and have a similar goal. I lost a lot of weight (down to 161) using this website a few years ago. When I first started, I tried to net zero calories by exercising at least as much as I ate. This was only sustainable for a few days. Then, I tried with my calories set at 2 pounds loss per week…

I did some running when I was around 100 pounds overweight. Here's what I know now that I didn't know then: At first, the slower the better. As your body uses energy from a variety of sources, the higher the percentage of energy coming from aerobic metabolism, the more you will be building your aerobic fitness. It's…

I bet my 3-year-old eats more than your 9-year-old!

Maybe it was lady?

I'm starting to think that there are some seriously forward-thinking trolls around here. This is no the first time I've seen a long-time member deactivate after their first (troll) post.

I'm also thinking about joining a 24-hour gym so that I can work out when I get off work (to use a positive habit to replace a negative one), but I'm already only getting 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night and just found out yesterday that I'm going to have to start getting up earlier in the morning. I think this would help me…

I tell myself all night at work that I'm not going to stop and get food when I get off, but I almost always do. I feel weak, but I don't feel like a victim. I know it's something that I'm choosing to do and that I don't have to do it, but I keep doing it anyway. Thanks for sharing! This really encourages me. I guess I'm…

Sorry for the hijack, OP. I guess what I'm hung up on is: why do I feel disgusted with myself if I can't help myself? Binge eating is a big part of why I've gained weight. When I first joined this site, I was literally surprised at exactly how many calories my favorite foods had. Most of my favorite sandwiches are around…

This was shared in a thread yesterday: http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/101/7/828/T1.expansion.html It seems like running might be slightly better at reducing fat (given the same diet I expect) because you'll be burning more calories per unit time. For me, neither one is going to make me lose weight until I get my diet…

I often consume 1500-3000 calories in a single sitting. I understand that many people eat less than this in a day, so I've got #1 covered, right. So, if I'm doing it on purpose, it's not binge eating, but if I feel like I can't control myself then it is? I'm not trying to be snarky. I'm seriously trying to figure out if I…

I've never tried Newtons, but I love my Altras. I have really wide feet, so the wide toe box is excellent for me. There's some information in the box about how to transition to zero-drop. I put 20 rough miles on mine the day I got them and they felt great the whole way. I wore them in my 40-mile race with no blisters or…

Thanks, Dave! I think I'm going to slow it down a bit on the downhill (maybe 8:00 pace). That should leave me with enough in the tank to hold my position on the trail. For me, there's a big difference between 8:00 and 7:30. I'll let you know how it went. Right now, I'm just hoping for another chance to run before Saturday.

I've never been interested in these timed races, because I don't know if I could handle the monotony. When I look at potential ultras, I'm looking mostly at point-to-point courses or loops, since I'm most interested in the experience of travelling through a place. I'll look at some out-and-backs, if it's something like…

No, but I did throw the shirt I was wearing straight into the trash after my ultra. Yeah, I have a few XLs that I can't wear. I'm hanging on to them to see how I feel about them after some weight loss.

Great job! Way to execute the plan!

That's for training, not for racing! If you can talk during a short race (less than an hour), you're probably doing wrong. My 5K strategy is to breathe so hard that the people in front of me stop to see if I'm OK.

I've only done the 40 so far, so not an expert by any means. I bought and enjoyed this book a lot. It's very practical. It also helped me decide not to run the 50 I was planning this fall. The author talks about something he calls "fear of missing out." They're not going to stop having 100 mile races next year! I know you…

I wear band-aids for anything more than 4 miles. The hassle of putting them on is less than the pain during the run and during the shower after. I've heard that compression shirts can help, but I have no experience with this. I just buy a lot of band-aids. When I'm fit like Carson, maybe I'll take my shirt off, too.

Do you free feed? In other words, do you leave the food down all the time? If so, try leaving it down for a few minutes and then taking it back up if he doesn't eat. Also, measure it exactly so that you know how much he's actually eating. If you were free feeding multiple dogs, there's no way to know how much each dog was…

http://www.therunningoftheballs.com/ I actually want to try this one this year. We usually drive through this neighborhood at least once a year. The balls work really well as decorations.

One of the biggest local 5Ks around here is called Beat the Heat. I ran it last year and it was the USATF NC road 5K championship? The course wasn't too bad, but it was a little "Parking-lot-ish" for my tastes and I think the entire 2nd mile was uphill. It starts and ends outside of where Wake Forest plays their home…

Great execution and a great result!

Awesome! That's faster than my all-out sprint.

I'd like to see more 1-mile races locally. It's a long-time goal of mine to break 6 minutes. I was always the slowest guy in class when we did the mile for PE, and the faster guys were breaking 6 minutes. Here in town, we only have 1 and it's downhill so not a "real" PR opportunity. It's also on Friday night, so I'm at…

Great job on the PR! Sounds like a rough race.

For me, the high is something I notice most when I'm not feeling it, like when I haven't been able to run for a while and I feel a sort of withdrawal. While running, the endorphines are usually in line with the discomfort I'm feeling and I just feel kind of normal.
