Great result! In my first 5K, I very nearly threw up on the girl trying to take my microchip away.

I use my heart rate to tell me when to slow down. If you have a heart rate monitor, this is easy. I just take mine manually whenever I have to stop at a light and then adjust my pace accordingly. I try to keep mine under 140 bpm, which results in a variety of paces, depending on conditions, temperature, fatigue, etc.…

I've never managed to run the "tempo" pace McMillan (or was it Daniels?) gave me (7:42). My fastest tempo run was around 8:00 pace, going just by "comfortably hard" feel.

I've had friends say this IRL after they joined the site, and I questioned them on it. What they mean is that they can't eat that much while eating "clean." In addition to counting calories, they're also trying to completely change how they eat. "Surely you ate more than that in order to gain weight?" "Yeah, but I was…

My PR is 6:23, but I usually run between 9:00 and 10:00 minutes per mile. Back in school, I went from around 11:00 down to 7:30 in a few years without really training much at all. At this point, OP, if you want to get faster, you should just slowly increase how much you run regularly (and at a slow pace). By the time…

My first 5K was well over 30 minutes (not officially timed and almost 20 years ago). I wasn't trained for it at all and I started out way too fast. I had to walk some, but I did beat the guy with the greyhound. I also beat Loren Woods, which I had jokingly stated as a goal going in. He wasn't really trying and was just…

You're absolutely going to break 50 minutes! I think starting around 8:00 and seeing how you feel is a good strategy. I broke 50 a couple of years ago (before I broke 25 for the 5K). For Dave, though, I'm afraid I have no advice, but I'm interested in seeing the responses. I did lose a lot of speed with my ultra training,…

That sounds so intense! I can't imagine that many people running an ultra.

Our local REI has a little fake boulder in the shoe section so that you can see how your shoes will move at different angles. Obviously simulates hiking and not running, but still might help a little if they have any you're looking at.

I'm planning 135, but life keeps getting in the way, so I set my goal at 105, which will be my best month this year.

In for Butter Power!

 Since my marathon was only around 25 miles, maybe I could get a "25" sticker?

I actually found the gif quite funny. Still don't know why I deserved it, though.

While 20 minutes is certainly not elite, I don't know how you could call it average. Average for who? Most competitive runners (track, XC, etc.) are going to be running faster than that. Most recreational runners (local 5Ks) are going to be slower than that. I've run a few 5Ks with 200+ people where only a handful broke 20…

wut? did you mean to communicate something with this or is it just the only gif you can find? My point is that his classmates weren't running that fast unless they are famous runners. Like Haile Gebrselassie. From Ethiopia. Who ran a 5K in 12:40. If it helps you, Addis Ababa is the capitol of Ethiopia (though not Mr.…

Great job!

I was going to mention this! Humans can and do thrive on a huge variety of diets. Of course, some of this isn't necessarily quite as advertised. I've never met an inuit or a "martial" vagan monk, but I have visited masailand a few times. Interestingly enough, the only food I was offered was cream of wheat and chai with a…

I definitely need to work this out, so I might be trying your suggestion soon. I've never negative split a race and would really like to do that. The closest I've come was holding a steady pace on my half-marathon, and that's my favorite race I've run! On my fastest two 5Ks, I ran the first two miles around 7:00 and then…

Thanks for sharing! Your results are incredible! Also, you make me think I should start lifting weights. My current BF% goal would put me lighter than you and I'm almost 5'11"!

Here are the two 5Ks I'm looking at this year: http://racethebar.com/ I'm going to follow a Jack Daniel's 16-week plan in between them to see how much I can improve. For the last 2 years, this was a 4-race series with overall series awards. I had hoped to place in my age group for the whole series, but they reduced it to 2…

It's 6 weeks until the anniversary of my 5K PR (22:43). This will be my last race before a 16-week training block aiming to peak for new PRs in the mile and the 5K in September. I'm about 35 pounds heavier than I was when I set that PR and was only able to manage an average of 8:30 on a 5 mile race on Sunday. I'm thinking…

How fast would you have to be to join? Last year, I was thinking I would go for sub-20 in July, but with my weight gain, I know that's not going to happen. Instead, I'm looking to PR in September.

I saw one of those on my greenway when it was warm last year. He had to tack back and forth to go up a hill (like sailing into the wind). It's pretty terrifying to see that coming at you!

That's approaching the world record! Where did you go to school? Addis?

I love his vegetarian chili recipe! His re-fried beans were a staple of mine for a while, too.

Got my first stroller run in a while done today, but I definitely won't be making my goal this month. Right now, this is my worst month since October, when I only ran once.
-
Oh, you mean sustaining 6 to 7 minute miles for a half-marathon? That's a very different thing. Someone that could run a half in 80 minutes could probably run a 5 minute mile (if racing just 1 mile). While not world class, that's faster than I ever expect to be (and I can string together a few 8 minute miles).

You can do it! During high school, for the presidential physical fitness test, I went from around 10 to about 7:30 over a period of a few years. I've since been able to run around 6:30 a couple of times. Be patient and don't try to do too much too fast.
