The 5 minutes or so that Hendrix improvised between Purple Haze and Villanova Junction at the end of his Woodstock set.

My Vibram Five Finger Sprints got a hole in them at 229 miles, mostly on tarmac and concrete. My New Balance trail shoes were hurting my feet by 300 miles and I had to get rid of them. They hurt even walking around for a few minutes. I've put just over 100 miles on my VFF Komodosports and I hope they'll last a lot longer…

I'm always interested in more runner friends. 2012 was my best year yet and I'm planning to train for my first ultra this fall!
-
10.5 so far this week, 31.7 so far for the month taking 2 days off to rest, because I have a 15 mile trail race on Saturday!
-
21.2 miles for this week

I think you're on the right track that building strength in your legs will help you (especially on long ascents). I would caution you not to add too much while also adding mileage. I had a minor injury last year while increasing my mileage and my strength training at the same time.

I'd like to join with a goal of 125 miles. Slept in today and have some errands to run, so nothing for me yet this year.

Great stuff!

There it is.

I just wanted to testify that I've seen significant results this year while doing most of my running at a slower pace. I started trying this because of some of the articles that scottb81 has shared here, mostly the Lydiard and the Hadd pdfs. I do most of my runs with a heart rate under 140. At first, this was almost…

I just broke 1000 for the year for the first time on Wednesday, up to 1016 today. This was my goal last year and I only ran 411. This year, I had no mileage goal, but trained for my first marathon, peaking at around 50 miles per week and am just now building the mileage back up after my taper.

I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet, but it's against the law in a lot of urban areas to bury your pet in your yard.

I had a lot of trouble with this for a while and it still crosses my mind when I get passed. I read somewhere that "they don't give out medals for training" and that's helped a lot. Since I've been focusing on aerobic base training, though, my "easy" pace has gotten faster and I've actually passed some people on those days.

I just did 10. I was hoping for 12, because 11 is my best ever.

I'm going to have to start doing the same thing. I've been making Scott Jurek's vegetarian chilli and it's awesome, but 2 bowls takes me over the recommended sodium for the day. I think 1 pound of dry beans is roughly equal to 4 cans. Just soak them overnight, cook them until tender and then add them to the recipe when you…

Apparently, Korean unicorns are more like some kind of dragon. For some reason, that makes them more believable to me.

Also, his BMR probably isn't 4800 calories. Maybe you meant he should subtract 75 or so?

or this, maybe: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/muscle-gain

Maybe someone else can weigh in here? I'm afraid I can't really give advice about gaining weight, since all I have to do is eat what I want and I gain (mostly fat and water) very fast. There are a lot of people on here that can advise you on that, though. I'd recommend looking for someone who's shirtless in their profile…

I'd be interested to know what formula you're using for this. I don't believe there's a direct relationship between heart rate and calories burned. They're indirectly correlated. If you do some amount of work, you will burn calories and your heart rate may increase. For certain ranges, there are formula that can fairly…

I've always had a high heart rate while running, even at longer distances (usually around 170 the whole way). This year, I've intentionally started trying to run with a lower heart rate (around 140). At first, I could only barely jog and my heart rate would get over that. I would have to take walking breaks. As I've kept…

I've done over 50 a couple of times and over 60 once. Trying for max again on Saturday.

Well, I'm not that big and I'm certainly not elite. A 153 minute marathon is certainly faster than I will ever do, but it's not world class. There are plenty of athletes that size running that fast. They can run even faster for a shorter time span. There are also lots of people bigger than me that are faster than me. I…

Thanks! That's an interesting article. hmm... I think "all out" has to be qualified within a framework of time. Tour stages average around 100 miles, right? So that will take at least several hours. The level of intensity that you can maintain for 3 hours is definitely less than the intensity you can maintain for a single…

I know you weren't talking to me, but is there a study you're basing this on? I'm guessing some top athletes have been tested in labs and maybe you can link to this information? It seems like even a small marathon runner should be burning 1000K per hour if he was competitive. If I burned 3000 calories during my 5-hour…

Kneading bread is in the database? I wish I had known that last week. About ten minutes in and my forearms were on fire.
-
Yeah, my HRM knows all that and my estimated max heart rate and fitness level, but it was giving me numbers way above the MFP database, so I don't trust them. I actually use the RunningAHEAD database now and its numbers are very similar to the MFP numbers. It seems pretty accurate to me, since I've been on track with my…

I could totally burn 300 calories playing croquet. I've burned 3000 on a single run before (and I used the MFP estimates, because I don't trust my HRM).

Short term: Lose 4 pounds by Christmas, then reset my calories to 1/2 pound per week loss for the last 5 to 10. Next year: Win my age group in a local trail 5K (this year's winner did 23:33, so not super competitive) and complete my first trail ultra (40 miles).

^This. I think it's important to give up on the idea of attaining to an ideal physique that someone else has. This is something that I'm having to learn in this process. When I get to a healthy or even optimal body fat % and am capable of doing the things I want to do fitness-wise, I'm going to look me. I'm not going to…
