  • I've decided to make it a goal to PR at every distance every year (for the next few years at least). This year, I've done that for every distance two miles and up and I'm about to start doing speed work to improve the shorter distances. I also want to increase the distance of my longest run ever each year for the next 5…
  • I was trying something like the Fat 2 Fit formula for a while and was getting good results (before all the junk food I ate last week). Basically, I looked at what my TDEE should be at my goal weight and never ate more than that (2600) even if I "earned" it with a good run. On my rest days, I stuck with the MFP numbers…
  • 35 miles this past week, 137.7 so far in July
  • I make a lot of hummus. It with pita bread is a major staple in my diet. I also get grape leaves and falafel whenever I can. Koftas and shawarma are among my favorite things. I also love Italian food, but don't eat much of it recently!
  • You're right that they couldn't do the whole thing, but they could make great movies out of sections of it, like Beren and Luthien or Turin Turambar. Some of the stories are so skeletal that they're almost begging to be filled out (unlike LOTR, which is quite too full to be accurately adapted).
  • I've heard that Radagast is in it for some reason.
  • Well, since the captain didn't get mauled, I'm offering myself up with an opposing viewpoint (though not on the poetry). I'm a huge LOTR geek, but I don't care for the movies. Don't get me wrong, they're probably the best possible LOTR movies (unless they did 6, that would be better). The cinematography was excellent, the…
  • Back in school, I was always the slowest guy in PE class or at try-outs for different sports. I'm not being hyperbolic, I was ALWAYS last. The mile we ran in PE seemed like such a long distance and I never managed it without stopping at least once. Anyway, I've been running for a while and I did 13 miles on Sunday and I…
  • I tried the 100 push-ups earlier this year. I went all the way through the program, but still couldn't do 100 at the end. I did improve my PR by 50% or so, though. I've been wanting to do the chin-ups program, but it wasn't made last time I looked. I might have to make my own plan. Recently, I've been combining my push-ups…
  • Hey! 33 miles this week, and 102.7 so far this month
  • Thanks! I'll give that a read later. I hope it explains how vegetarians in India have been able to live without "modern" diseases for so long.
  • Oh, and sweet potatoes!
  • Huh? I would love to know if you had something with which to back that up. People in India have long lived off of primarily lentils, with a fair bit of rice and bread (and some paneer, right?) and have not had a high incidence of "modern" disease. Now that they are eating more meat in the cities, they are seeing increases…
  • Wow. That actually really makes me want to become a bodybuilder. 1500 in a meal isn't that hard, though. Just upsize your combo and have a few beers. If you're trying to eat healthy, then it gets a little harder.
  • I'm going to check out some of these suggestions, too. I've been using the Vibrams a lot and it's really helped my form, but they don't feel quite right on my feet (which are very wide, with high arches and loose ligaments). I've been running in New Balance for years, because they seem really easy to find in wide sizes and…
  • I'm running my first in early October, so about 11 weeks of training left. I'm planning my longest run ever this weekend (13 miles).
  • Great work! Also, that's a really cute puppy.
  • That's how I grew mine! I left one in the pantry too long and it sent up four sprouts. I cut each one and rooted it in a cup full of dirt for a week or two and then put them outside in the ground. I think I got 4-6 sweet potatoes from each sprout. They will grow in poor soil and don't require pesticides. The leaves are…
  • I'm not going to disagree, either. These Kenyans I've known never wore shoes at all. I tried to go running completely barefoot while wearing shoes the rest of the time and ended up getting sick. The Vibrams have really helped my form, though. I had thought I was doing pretty good with not heel-striking, but I tried the…
  • When asked why their songs were so short, Joey Ramone said that they were actually long songs, played fast. "Punk" as a musical genre is necessarily associated with beats per minute. It was a throwback to old-school rock and a rejection of the grandiose, expansive style of rock that was popular in the early seventies. As…
  • The word "punk" actually predates "punk" music. I found an interesting article from the early sixties that referred to the Beach Boys as "punks." Oddly enough, the Ramones cite the Beach Boys as one of their major influences. Joey has said that they were trying to play pop music but that they weren't very good. Seriously…
  • I agree that you can't just go straight to barefoot running after a lifetime of wearing shoes. If you're mostly barefoot throughout the day, you might be fine, otherwise you need to work up to it and probably run in minimalist shoes for a while first (they can offer protection without altering your natural gait). On the…
  • Total for the past week: 29 miles Total so far in July: 69.7 miles
  • Thanks!
  • One time a homeless guy with an eye patch yelled, "That'll get the weight off!" as I jogged past him.
  • Thanks, Brian! I found more than enough on that site to use up my itunes gift card, and some of them I would have wanted anyway (Tom Petty). I got 20 new songs, in seven "genres." Now, my playlist is over two hours, which is enough for most of my runs (and I don't listen on the long trail runs anyway).
  • No science channel here, either. If you find it online, please share!
  • 20 consecutive pull-ups 100 consecutive push-ups 100 sit-ups in 2 minutes 6 minute mile 20 minute 5K Qualify for Boston Complete some ultras Oh, and a visible six-pack!
  • I'm feeling that! (assuming you haven't blocked me) I think Scott said it all when he said the article should have been titled something more like: "Overtraining and poor nutrition can lead to metabolic problems."
  • I did not see that coming. Awesome!
