Sex: F Age: 23 Weight: 128 lbs Height: 5'8" How many calories you NET per day: 1200-1600 (depending on whether I exercise or not, as well as how hungry I am) How many times per week you exercise w/ minutes: I aim for at least 3 times/week, 30-45 min

I was a competitive swimmer and a coach for several years. You'd be best off finding lessons in your area. A lot of gyms (like YMCA) and swim clubs offer adult classes or private lessons. That way, you'll have someone teaching you proper technique and giving you good feedback. If your technique is bad, you'll struggle…

Oh, I forgot to mention this - there's an organic brand at Kroger called Health Valley that carries soups REALLY low in sodium. Like, around or under 100mg for the entire can. They have tomato too!
-
This! I used to eat canned soup all the time. Lunch meat is another one that surprised me - even the "low sodium" varieties!
-
I think they also made just plain and flavored vodkas, which are slightly lower in calories than other brands (75 calories per 1.5 oz as compared to 90-100 calories per oz). However, that's only because they're a lower proof (60 instead of 80). So it's the same thing, just weaker and therefore less caloric. Most liquors…

Same here! My bp is also very low. I black out almost every time I stand up and I'm dizzy all the time. It's really irritating.

I've read some research from Nesse and a few other authors on the subject, and I think it's quite interesting. Adopting a paleo diet could be useful for a lot of people. At the very least, going semi-paleo (primarily eating vegetables, meats, seeds/nuts, etc. but maybe including grains and dairy in moderation) seems…

I like to eat cereal with greek yogurt instead of milk. I usually go for kashi go lean since it's high-protein and low-sugar. You can throw some berries or dried fruit in there too. Depending on what I put in, it's typically below 300 calories, and has at least 20g of protein. Keeps me full all morning.
-
It really doesn't matter when you eat, as long as you're still meeting your daily goals. I snack at night too because I can't sleep on an empty stomach.
-
Cause it's delicious and good for you :) It's a good source of iron, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K, folate, potassium, etc etc. Such an easy way to get the vitamins and minerals your body needs.

I'm a grad student at the University of Cincinnati. It's been pretty good so far, but honestly, I miss UT Austin (where I did my undergrad) so much! I'll have my MA in about a year, and then it's time to start applying to schools once again for my doctorate. At this point, I'm kind of okay with the idea of being a student…

Very true, though unfortunately it doesn't help me much! I drink A TON of water before and after drinking alcohol, but I still usually manage to get a hangover (or at the very least, a headache). I'm sure it would be way worse if I didn't hydrate though.
-
This happens to me too. I'm pretty sure it's just the amount of sodium that restaurants put in their food. I don't eat a lot of sodium at home, so when I go out, I get really bloated from it...and drinking tons of water just bloats me more! You'll feel fine after a day or two though.
-
I've definitely found the opposite to be true. When I was heavier, I could go out drinking all night with my friends and be fine in the morning. Now just one or two drinks will disrupt my sleep and give me a migraine the next day. To be fair though, I hardly ever drink now (cutting back really helped with weight loss), so…

I believe that currently an upper limit of 2,300mg is advised. However, if you're at a higher risk for hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease (basically if you're older than 50, obese, African American, etc.), then you should stay under 1500mg. That being said, the body only needs around 500mg to function properly.
-
There's some good advice in this thread, but one thing I might add is that you can make more nutritious substitutions. For example, you could swap your light yogurt for greek yogurt. In the same 6oz you'd get double the calories, extra protein (around 16g) and fat.

I find it pretty hilarious that this lady berated you about eating meat when she was giving her money to (and hence supporting) an establishment that profits off of animal products.
-
Yeah...correct me if I'm wrong, but he/she said that dinosaurs and humans lived 2 million years apart, which is far from accurate
-
Good points! I actually meant to mention that it could work for those who do suffer with gluten and lactose intolerance, but for those of us who don't, it doesn't seem necessary.
-
Ooooh man, I hope you were joking on the 2 million years apart bit. Dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago, and humans have existed for no more than 200,000 years, lol.

Some aspects of the paleo diet are useful - obviously we need to focus on eating a more diverse set of vegetables and fruits, nuts, legumes, tubers, lean meats, etc. That's clearly a huge benefit of the diet (given that people ARE indeed trying to mimic what hunter-gatherers ate - simply eating the same old meat and…

BMR = the calories that you burn just by living (maintaining body temperature and performing all bodily functions) Gross = the calories that you burn during an activity includes BMR. For instance, say you jogged for an hour - you burned 600 calories during that hour. However, 100 of those calories were burned as part of…
-
Well, according to the BMI chart, anything between 120 and 155 is fine. I would say that you should shoot for 155, then see how you feel. Just remember that everyone's different - which is pretty clear from this thread, since other women my height who weight more wear smaller sizes than me! I'm 5'8", weight 128, and I…

You can use diet mixers when you're at home, and every bar I've been to has had diet tonic and/or soda water.
-
I'm not sure if it would affect weight loss that much, but consuming too much salt has been liked to hypertension, upping your risk of cardiovascular disease. Just for the sake of health, it's best to keep sodium as low as possible (under 2500mg). Your body actually only needs about 500mg to function.

-Sandwiches! Use sugar-free whole grain bread, lean meat (turkey, chicken, tuna), cheese, spinach, etc. Or just a pb&j. -Whole grain wraps - tons of possibilities for fillings: lean meat, veggies, spreads like hummus, avocado, etc. -Make tuna salad with lite mayo, seasonings, and minced celery and onion. Eat it on whole…

Starkist (the tuna brand) came out with some recently that have salmon or shrimp in them. They're really good and have a lot less sodium than most frozen meals.

My favorite breakfast is: Kashi Go Lean cereal (13 g protein in only 1 cup!) 6 oz greek yogurt (usually around 14-15 g protein) Blueberries Mix them all together and it's delicious. If you get plain yogurt, add some honey and cinnamon. That's nearly 30 g of protein in one meal that's only around 300 calories and takes a…

I love sugar-free whole wheat bread. I usually just get the generic Kroger brand. No sugar, only 35-40 calories per slice, and it's usually fortified with calcium, which is a huge bonus. It still tastes great to me, and is light and fluffy, just how bread should be :)
-
I usually get vodka soda. It's just vodka, which is low in calories in comparison to other varieties of alcohol (I believe about 60 cal/oz or 90/1.5 oz shot.), and carbonated water. It's usually accompanied by a lime, and if you prefer some more flavor, order a flavored vodka. it's great because the only calories you're…
