My list: 1) Spending a small FORTUNE on reusable plastic containers for my lunch. 2) Spending more for laundry detergent (now wearing TWO sets of clothes per day - work clothes + gym clothes) 3) Spending more on dishwashing detergent.....since I'm cooking more at home. Lots and lots of dishes to wash now. 4) Foregoing new…

Thanks for this explanation. I guess I didn't realize the "calories in vs. calories out" was sliding thoughout the day. Today, I had breakfast that was about 350 calories and it showed I was "over." Now I see that as I'm burning calories throughout the day, it's "in the zone." I guess this might be useful for meal timing,…

Ugh, I have this problem too! I found some sports bras at Target that are lightly padded and hide the "headlamps." I love them and plan on buying several more in the near future. Plus they are a nude color........which is great because I have a lot of light colored workout tops and the standard white ones just weren't…

I had the same thing when i started squats. Luckily my gym has a whirlpool spa so I made good use of that. Other than that, you've got some good suggestions. A hot bath, stretching, and don't stop working out. ETA: And water. Lots and lots of water.

Done! Sounds like an interesting dissertation topic!

I have had 4 different personal trainers in the past. One of them was awesome (and he's remained a good friend to this day), two of them were/are pretty good, and the fourth was horrible and I got rid of him after the first month. Here are my suggestions: 1) Whatever gym you choose, ask for a 14 day trial membership. Most…

Thanks! I've been using FitBit for a 2 weeks, and I think I have a pretty good idea now of what my true TDEE is. Thinking I will try that for a few weeks and see how I do. Do I need to make any changes to my FitBit profile?

I actually use a heart rate monitor when i work out (usually weights and some cardio), so I get a pretty accurate burn from that (although some people think HRMs aren't all that accurate either). I do believe in eating at goal, not going under (or not by too far under anyway). Yes, I may lose faster if only 1200 calories a…

I had to take one yesterday. I worked out hard Sunday and Monday and I had such muscle soreness that the thought of going to them almost brought me to tears. I did manage to take the dog for two long walks I usually take 2-3 rest days a week. As stated, it pertains to my workout schedule but not my food goals. I continue…

Wow! You look fantastic! Way to go. Two years is quite an accomplishment!!

Bump. I'm interested too. Ironically I *just* now calculated my TDEE (based on FitBit's estimate) and it was almost identical to yours! My average burn per day is 2126/day. I'm finding it confusing. I don't know if I should trust MFP's calories left for the day or FitBit's.

What has helped me is to stop comparing myself to others. Try focusing on setting small reachable goals for yourself. Next time, try to go 2 miles. Or 1.75 miles. Or even 1.55 miles. Just a little more than you did last time. Keep a log. After a month or so, look back at where you started. It's a great motivator! And…

Nevermind. I figured it out. Just unlinked, then relinked my accounts.

Stop saying "when I lose this weight, I'll _______ <fill in the blank.> Enjoy your life now....not someday! Don't put your life on hold until you've achieved the body you want. Enjoy it now! Enjoy the process. It's going to take some time, so you may as well learn to enjoy it.

I have 2 memeberships. LA Fitness is $39.95/mo. It is within walking distance of my house. But their weekend hours suck (8-5 Saturday and Sunday). I also belong to Planet Fitness. Right now I'm lifting heavy FOR ME which means PF equipment will suffice. I use the Smith for deadlifts when I do them there (usually do them at…

One of the bodybuilders at my gym gave me some unsolicited encouragement on my hang clean this week. Told me to keep working at it....I've almost got it!

I have SVT. It started in my early 20s and the final straw was when I passed out at work and was rushed to the ER. I now take medication to control it. Exercise is tough, but my physician has told me that exercising actually helps. You just need to start out slowly and work your way up. Walking is best and gradually…

BTW, there is a cell phone app called DriveBit that could help with this. You tap start when you begin driving and stop when you arrive, and it automatically updates your FitBit with your drive time so it won't record errant steps.

I bought the FitBit One last week. (TBH it was an impulse buy.....I was at Best Buy buying 3 new kitchen appliances and after spending $1500, I thought what's another $100. LOL.) I chose the One over the Zip primarily because it tracks floors climbed (but admittedly I work in a 1-story building) and it tracked sleep (and…

My whys: 1. In 2011, my dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. By Christmas that year he had lost a lot of weight.....and weighed less than me! :ohwell: That was humbling. So in 2012, I got busy getting healthy and lost 50 lb. And then winter 2012 hit, and my activity slowed to a creeping halt. And I gained 20 lb back.…

I do, partly to remind me to take them, partly to watch my micronutrients (Vitamin B, C, iron, calcium, etc).

Bump. I just started deadlifting a month ago and am curious to see the answers.

I would tell him/her exactly this. ^^ A good trainer will also help you define and refine your goals. For example, my trainer asked me "whose body type do you admire?" I hadn't really thought about it, but Michelle Obama's upper body came to mind. (P.S. Hoping someone else chimes in here with better suggestions!!)

I tend to snack all day at work. My go-to snacks are: Almonds (or cashews) String cheese Turkey pepperoni Protein bars (I know.....a lot of chemical fillers but it keeps me from eating Snicker's bars and it has like 20g of protein and 200 calories) Apples Bananas Peanut butter Baby carrots Cucumbers

This is what I've been doing too, however I will say that the last couple of days MFP seems to send errant data to FitBit. For example, I entered my workout last night, beginning 7:35pm which lasted 1 hour 25 minutes. MFP sent that to Fitbit.com. Then about 20 minutes later sent it again as 11:35am for same duration and…

I would ask VERY specific questions and pay attention to his/her answers. Such as: 1) I have a previous shoulder injury and back surgery and am worried about reinjury. What types of exercises and routines would you have me doing? (At this point, the trainer *should* ask for more details about your history and be taking…

I saw this the other day at the gym. This 20-something guy was doing bent over single arm rows with a 30 lb weight (which is about the weight I use for it). After ever set, he dropped the weight and huffed and puffed around the bench. I mean, cmon dude.....If a 47 year old out of shape woman can do 30 lb and GENTLY set the…

I will say that my trainer is 24 also. He has a bachelors' degree in exercise physiology and is working on his masters' in physical therapy. Even though he is young, he seems to get what my challenges are as a 47 year old out of shape woman. So far, I haven't heard him sprout any broscience.....but we've only worked out…
