Science is not trusted at all, which isn't that surprising when scientists have been very poor in communicating their subject to the public, and the media haven't bothered to try and report it accurately. Science comms often boils down to 'Clever scientist man said this so you should believe him'. Surveys of the general…

Totally agree!

I am a scientist, so obviously I'd consider myself more pro-science than most, and any personal anecdotes I could come up with would be to do with my own personal experience with the peer review process. Nowhere did I say that there is a better alternative, and certainly it is far better than linking to a random blog. I am…

There is a lot of crap in scientific journals too, and peer reviewed ones at that. Quacks have their own journals with very convincing looking 'studies'. Most studies in peer reviewed journals can't ever be repeated.

There has absolutely been a significant rise is antibiotic resistance due to the use of them as growth promoters in agriculture, although this is now banned in many parts of the world. The animals have to be kept free of disease when they are kept in crowded conditions. Unfortunately antibiotic resistance comes down to far…

Indeed this is true! I was making a bit of a joke. Prions are very interesting things...

Vegan lifestyle and disease statistics are virtually impossible to detangle into anything meaningful, just because the overall lifestyles of vegans tend to be so radically different in dozens of other ways besides what they eat. But no, vegan diets won't protect you from infectious diseases, degenerative diseases, genetic…

The problem with the 'frogs aren't meant to be strawberries' argument is that it takes genetic modification completely out of context. You aren't putting frog into strawberry. You are putting a gene that encodes a protein into a genome that will then produce proteins. Take 'frog' and 'strawberry' out of it. It is all…

My favourite is what I'm guessing is water loss after a night out on the town drinking... Booze it up, next morning, four pounds down. Maybe I'll write a book...the alcohol and kebab diet.

Almost everyone I know that is naturally thin (unlike me who has to count the cals) lives by moderation, 80:20, whatever you want to call it. There is more to health than nutrient breakdown. I don't want to live a miserable life of 'optimum' foods I don't like as much. I want to enjoy myself and eat that goddamn unhealthy…

Saying things like 'they don't want you to know your food contains GMOs' and 'they're banned in some countries'... This is because of consumer pressure. This is because people are afraid of them. Not because they have any information that they're going to sprout limbs and strangle you.

I try to save up some calories for a night out, choose lower calorie drinks like gin and tonic/white wine (thankfully I enjoy these drinks, no point in drinking low cal drinks if you don't enjoy them) get myself a diet coke or something partway through the night to slow down, and try not to get too drunk, because that's…

I'm genuinely confused as to how GMOs supposedly cause cancer. What is the proposed mechanism by which this occurs? Movement of genes from one organism to another somehow changes it into a cancer causing frankenfood? Or is this just arm waving because it is 'unnatural'? You can't just 'decide' that something must cause…

Anything Activia gives me unbearable stomach cramps! Shame, their 'creamy' dessert yoghurts are rather delicious.

I have to put my reading glasses on everytime I walk past a magpie, because my brain is convinced it's going to fly over and peck my eyes out. Not sure I ever want to watch The Birds.

I always want a hamburger :( Still trying to perfect a homemade recipe, I'm not a very good cook and they never turn out well!

Gahhhhh! There is no evidence that eating grains is bad for you. There is no evidence that eating bread is bad for you. There is no evidence that 'chemical's in food are causing any problems at all. And I am bloody sick of reading otherwise!

I've always found it ridiculous and offensive that we fling around words like 'starvation'. There are real starving kids in the world and not because they skipped their bloody bacon and eggs in the morning!

Cleanse of what? Noone ever seems to be able to tell me the answer.

Not outwardly, but I always feel a bit sorry for my boyfriend when he gets all excited about cooking me a meal and it's a calorie laden monstrosity! I try to have small portions but I feel like he might be a bit annoyed about my constantly checking everything we eat for calories.

Yeah, I was gonna say this! No problem eating whatever and whenever, but if that was me I'd definitely have indigestion and some crazy dreams!

The one you conveniently glossed over: Any member of the kingdom Animalia, comprising multicellular organisms that have a well-defined shape and usually limited growth, can move voluntarily, actively acquire food and digest it internally, and have sensory and nervous systems that allow them to respond rapidly to stimuli:…

Ummm, perhaps you should recheck that dictionary, and perhaps a primary school science book...

You're aware that Hira Ratan Manek has been outed as a hoaxer right? As have all of the others ever studied while doing this.

Thanks everyone, being a complete beginner I was perhaps doing it wrong! Thanks for all the advice and encouragement.

I grew up in a household where sweets and crisps were banned. My mother was on a lifelong diet and anything she couldn't eat, we couldn't have. She controlled everything we ate (I had never used an oven until I was 18). You ate what you were given or you didn't eat. You ate everything on your plate regardless of whether…

Going back to what someone said about possession and speaking strange languages... I had a book when I was a kid, I can't remember much about it but it was all about real life mysteries and explanations for the paranormal. Apparently, according to one of the stories, a guy under hypnosis once started reeling off a…

Fitness Blender have 8 week plans for just a few dollars, then all of the workouts are on their website. They're good but you have to have quite a lot of time to dedicate to it. 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30 are good if you're pushed for time!
