  • Believe it or not, bench press is a back exercise (back and triceps) if done correctly. Also, barbell rows (Pendley Rows) are awesome as well as military press. You will need to use heavier weights though.
  • To be honest, it is tough to "lift heavy" without a proper home gym or fitness club membership. Concentrate on form. Use free weights, not machines. Try to use barbell exercises instead of dumbells. Start light (the weight of the bar) and add weight (5lbs max) each workout. Read: Starting Strength Mark Rippetoe (Can get…
  • Gimme a break. What happened to working through issues? People these days give up on relationships too easily. For all you know she's got a significant emtional capital invested in this relationship.
  • Just show him how your weight loss and increased fitness translate into more fun between the sheets! That'll shut him up. In fact you won't be able to wipe the silly grin off his face.
  • So true. 15, 10, 8, 5. Maybe the ultimate workout is a one rep ultimate max and then you die. Whatever works for ya!

  • Looking down is correct.
  • "You don't lock your elbows straight in a dead hang position while in the middle of a set. You keep them slightly bent. " Again, why?
  • 15. If you want to do more pullups, increase your power-to-weight ratio. We all know the first way to do this, the second is to lose weight. Doing pullups 25 pounds lighter than your previous self is probably the number one determinant for doing more pullups.
  • "14. Keep elbows slightly bent throughout your set. Don't lock your elbows in the middle of a set. Keep them bent at all times." Why? Isn't full extension the gold standard? Otherwise awesome info.
  • If the comments are only negative, you have a beef. If he is generous with the compliments as well then I think you are over-reacting. And I assume your comments are premised by the fact that you never utter a critical word to your man. Not just physical comments either.
  • Has the nausea occurred on more than one occasion or is this an isolated instance? We all have our off days. I work out in the evenings after dinner and often only leave 90 minutes between finishing dinner and starting training, which starts with heavy back squats. Never a problem. Also, as a mom it is tough to get enough…
  • I have a fizik saddle (male version). Bought it 5 years ago. It is worth every penny. http://www.fizik.it/women.aspx
  • Highly doubt you can get blisters from a spin class. Riding a real bike and spinning aren't really the same thing. There's no reason to tightly grip the handlebars on a stationary bike. Germs are another thing. But you can always wipe the bike down before you use the bike.
  • What, no hills in your area? JK. Then you have an imbalance that will be resolved with squatting, although it may take some time.
  • As do I. May actually lengthen my workouts since I usually want to get to the next set sooner than I should.
  • Just keep at it. Even if sore, work out. The soreness will subside the more you squat. It is a good thing your hams are sore. Means you are engaging your posterior chain.
  • I am going a bit from memory here but besides the narrow grip and not using an overhand grip, he "dives into the hole" which Rippetoe does not recommend. He also looks straight forward instead of slightly down and does not point his toes out. But seriously, what do I know. The guy squats 400lbs so it clearly works for him.…
  • Believe it or not, try widening your grip. Mehdi has a very narrow, full grip. Try a wider grip and just use an overhand grip. I had the same problem. And look about 5 feet in front of you at the floor. Mehdi's grip isn't for everyone.
  • Thanks all for sharing your experiences. I have it in my head that the warmup sets are beneficial for strength as well, especially the last warmup set before the working set, which I usually do at 70-80% of the working set. I guess the conclusion is that everybody is different and even those who have been at it for a while…
  • Very impressed you are able to get this done in under an hour. I am only at 160 on squats and my workout took 90 minutes again tonight. I do far more warmup sets though. At least 2 sets of 5 reps for 3 warmup weights before my working sets. Maybe because I'm a little older and a little weaker!
  • I really feel for you. This is quite common but most people are surprised by how long it takes to recover. I had this exact thing happen about two weeks ago. Aggravated one side of my lower back doing interval training on a rowing machine. It was frustrating to miss those workouts but at the end of the day, I was reminding…
  • Agreed! I would also like to see more use of the Search function on MFP. Same questions over and over and over again. Yawn.
  • Anybody who has traveled in warm countries will know that an umbrella is the way to go so good idea! So it looks stupid. Big deal. The other thing to do of course is to just juggle your work schedule and get out first thing in the morning but that isn't always possible for some people. Take a watter bottle with you as well.
  • I'm a bit younger than you (49) but closer in age to you than most on this forum. I've been doing Stronglifts since the beginning of April. Two things: 1) Follow the advice and deload 10% on only the lift you are failing. If I am not mistaken, this should be done if you fail your reps two workouts, not three, in a row for…
  • I understand your concerns about upping your calories. You just have to play around a little bit to get the right intake. Your appetite will definitely increase as you put weight on the bar and start to challenge yourself. But 1,450 a day ain't gonna cut it, especially if you want to hit your target protein intake of…

  • I think that for your situation, most would agree that adding in weights and reducing but keeping the cardio is best. But I think you will be surprised by the weight loss benefits of strength training, especially if you are regularly challenging yourself to lift uncomfortably heavy things. Doing 30 bicep curls with a 5 lb…
  • Maybe a protein shake would help fill you up. At the end of the day though, so you are starving, big deal. It's a head game thing, nothing more. Suck it up, buttercup :)
  • Great for body recomposition. You will definitely lose in the waist.

  • "Are muscled/defined women attractive"? Only if accompanied by big, fake boobs :P In all seriousness, I always get a kick out of the fact that it is usually women who respond to these posts. I honestly can't imagine a male starting a thread that says "Are muscled/defined men attractive"? and then have the majority of…
