  • I was worried about the type of fat -- until I watched the documentary Fat Head. Changed my life.
  • I plan to add a glass of red daily as soon as I reach my weight goal! It's only 4 carbs. I'd happily give up the macadamia's for it.
  • Meghan, that is amazing! My brother was just diagnosed with type II. I will tell him about this. Thanks!
  • Crustless quiche 317 calories/ 2 carbs/ 25g fat/ 18g protein
  • 142 -- that's the point where mom says, "you're looking thin" with a worried frown.
  • I think crossfit can be safe. There's a great site called motility WOD (workout of the day) -- written by a physical therapist. He has all kinds of tips for crossfitting safely. I don't do it -- it's too intense for me. But I understand why people do. Time, for one thing (do more in less time). Results for another. Good…
  • Hi Sadie, I took a look at your food diary. I think you are doing an amazing job exercising and eating only an average of 1200 calories a day. You must have great willpower! I don't like to advise. On the other hand, I never would tried what is working for me if I hadn't heard about it on these boards. No one program is…
  • Good for you! I hope I lose a few more pounds this week. But just knowing that it works and continues to keep working, I can be patient. I can't believe how easy it is. No hunger. I have been reading over at Dr. Peter Attia's Eating Academy site. When I think of how many insulin sensitive (and therefore overweight) people…
  • Thanks, I didn't know that.
  • That sounds delish! I will try it.
  • Thanks, I see that I wasn't tracking fiber, but it makes sense to do so. I may be low for a few weeks but as I increase my carbs in the form of green veggies each week, fiber will go up.
  • 1. yes 2. yes 3. yes!! I'm not missing sugar yet, but I'm missing the odd glass of wine.
  • Merlin, I am with you! It's early days yet, but I feel good. I'm sleeping very well. I had been waking at night around 2:30am and reading for a while before sleeping. Not anymore. I sleep soundly and wake without an alarm. I'm going to keep adding five carbs a week until I stop losing weight. Then I'll know my maintenance…
  • Do you worry about calories at all?
  • This is an excellent point! It is very difficult to overeat protein, I am finding. It levels naturally for me. I do plan to eat this way for the rest of my life. I hope once in maintenance to be able to add green veggies up to 100 grams a day if I'm lucky and maintain a healthy weight for the rest of my life.
  • The only carbs I'm eating right now are from green veggies plus trace ones in nuts and cheese. I'm adding 5 grams of carb a week to see how many I can handle and still lose weight. Once I'm in weight maintenance mode, I will keep adding greens. if I get to the point where I can handle 100 grams a day I will be a happy…
  • True! What Gary is is an excellent researcher and writer, who is able to understand the difference between an observational study and a causal link and summarize findings in an understandable way for a lay audience, which doctors and scholars sometimes have trouble doing. There are many doctors and scholars when you look…
  • Thanks so much for this link! I started out on the Atkins plan then through my immersion on the topic moved to LFHC, so I didn't see this group. I will join!
  • Julia, This is so great to hear -- it's a bit scary when I see the fat % climbing higher than 50%. But I think that's just because I've been brainwashed all these years into thinking fat is the enemy. Note to self: Fat doesn't spike insulin, simple carbs do. Now that I've increased my fat, I find protein is just taking…
  • That is so great to hear -- it's a bit scary when the fat % starts to climb. But I think it's because I've been brainwashed all these years into thinking fat is the enemy. Now that I've increased fat, protein is just taking care of itself (I find it hard to overeat protein) and the carbs are all coming from green veggies…
  • Thanks for the link, but WebMD is just repeating the party line by quoting the AHA. The fact is, no study has ever proven the cholesterol theory. The real poison to the body that spikes insulin is sugar / simple carbs -- and docs have known this for a long time. Gary Taubes explains this well in his book Why We Get Fat.
  • That is such great news! It's hard to wrap my brain around the fact that this is working for me. How much weight did you have to lose?
  • The above mentioned resources are all really good. I'm doing low-carb high-fat -- but I often look to Paleo recipes for inspiration, especially from Primal Blueprint. I started with Atkins because that is what has worked for me in the past. But after reading Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt's LCHF for Beginners, I'm following his…
  • So agree! I am down six and a half pounds in 12 days. I am eating about 1900 calories and more than 50% is fat -- and I am losing weight. I'm never hungry. I have no cravings. I sleep well. My brain is alert and happy. My ears stopped itching. Fat, where have you been all my life!
  • As a former WW leader, I think it's smart to get off the point system and start to learn what your most effective eating plan means in terms of fat/protein/calories. Go, you!
  • Yes! As a health editor for many years, I have always felt uncomfortable having to constantly defend myself to my peers about the only way of eating that has ever slimmed me down. I found the documentary Fat Head really helpful in boiling down the issues of insulin resistance and why the same diet doesn't work for every…
  • I am starting to eat whole eggs - yolks and whites. The USDA has been feeding us a crock for most of our lives about how fat causes heart disease. Turns out fat is not the enemy. From Forbes: researchers recently discovered lost data from a 40-year-old study on heart disease, analyzed the lost data, and discovered … wait…
  • This is a really good point. Other social sites alert you when someone has replied to your post. I wish MFP did that.
  • Great reminder. And I'd love to see less of the negative/just useless comments. Stop and think before you hit reply: Am I helping or hurting?
  • That's not even Atkins. In his original work, Dr. Atkins advocated not restricting fat to get best results. At under 50 carbs you should be able to add some fat which would keep you satiated. Since you're keeping the diary diligently, I'd try some personal experimenting to see what really works for you.
