  • The objective with lifting when losing weight is to maintain lean body mass. If you're not lifting, when you're losing you are losing fat and lean body mass. I'd like to hold on to any lean body mass I have. I do both and the weights I am lifting are going up - clearly getting stronger. With strong muscles it's helping my…
  • First off I'm a beginner, but you have me thinking about my own progress. This is something I read this week. http://www.charlespoliquin.com/ArticlesMultimedia/Articles/Article/432/Rising_to_Pull-Up_Success.aspx I'll be watching to see if anyone else has any input. Hope it helps a bit
  • my initial ones I've completed: run 5km run 10km working on now swim 750m freestyle (nearly there) Sprint triathlon - in 6 weeks (best get my swiming sorted first) run 5km in under 30 min
  • ^This There's no motivation. It's just what I do. The odd weekend/day where there are exceptional circumstances and I don't get to work out or don't eat my normal foods, just dust myself off and get back on course. I feel better when I'm eating good whole foods and getting out for some exercise. Simples.
  • I have to go more or less cold turkey. The one exception being dark choc (minimum 85% coco solids) get me through. 25Gm of choc only has 4 gm of sugar. Figure out your triggers. I need to keep fruit down if I've been on a bad run. Then I can bring it back in. My trainer was suggesting nut butters. But I can't keep these in…
  • This ^ Your food diary isn't terrible at all. I love food and think the more I think of food as fuel the more I enjoy it. Most of the time I know I am fueling my body. Some times I eat out side of this, but I view this as part of keeping my mental health in check and once it all balances out I'm good. If it's jiggles, then…
  • I do it with a dress/jeans, that are one size down and I can try on in a size that fits me. Going down one size my shape isn't going to change drastically. I only need to wait 4-12 weeks, depending on how far off I am. I currently have a dress and jeans that fit this criteria. Jeans fit, kinda, but in 10lb more and they'll…
  • I've never suffered with depression, but I have been sick before where couldn't face doing much, was sleeping 12-16 hours, so I think I understand. I wasn't eating paleo then, but really success was based on something that I could buy lots of, keep in fridge/freezer, and when cooking minimal washing (read between the lines…
  • Meat balls + Ratatouille Followed by greek yoghurt/fruit/mixed nuts + a cup of coffee. Cal:522, protein 23gm (could do better on protein), carbs 40gm, fat 33gm. I like to eat a lot early in the day!
  • The best cardio is one that you'll stick with!! If you like cycling or swimming do that. Dance if that gets you going!! If you don't like running, but still want to run, do intervals. They are over before you know it. Google intervals or HIIT - high intensity interval training.
  • have you never heard, nothing smaller than your elbow in your ear!!
  • I've never experienced, but do they feel like marbles? If so, read this, by Lyle McDonald. He does say it happens to people as they are getting very lean. I don't know if you're at that stage yet.... http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/of-whooshes-and-squishy-fat.html
  • What others said. In addition, I annotate how my exercises went - how I'm feeling in general, if I've a headache, etc... I keep an eye to make sure I'm getting a good mix of fruit and veggies, and look back on it. I find if I'm low of veggies, I don't feel great next day. Count everything.
  • Hi, I'm sorry about the cancer diagnosis and well done for doing so well. I'm going to put my radiotherapy hat on. The way that radiotherapy works is that a target is drawn on your initial CT scan and they will plan to treat this area, and avoid as many of your organs at risk (e.g. bowel, etc...). This assumes you are…
  • I work in health care, but am not patient interfacing. Looking at patients coming in is part of my motivation for losing weight. I can't do anything about my genetics, and some people have rotten luck and get some c"$py diseases....but others are caused by their lifestyle. I figure I should make the best out of the body I…
  • If you're at the party - go be merry. But I eat before I go to a party. Winter time I'll have a big bowl of soup, summer time a big salad including protein. Means I'm full before I go. I can still leave room to eat a little at the party, but I'll only taste it. - I've the added advantage I don't really drink (not enough to…
  • I feel for you. I don't suffer, so I can't compare. But I do find that my food log is far more than just tracking calories. I find that if I haven't been feeling well, I can often see it in my food. For example - I woke up with a head ache this morning and knew it was the ice cream I had last night. It's only with regular…
  • Making dinners for the week, and hopefully, with my second hour I'll get out for a run!
  • I don't know.....but what I've found is if it has added sugar, e.g. a biscuit/cake, not an apple, then I'm going to crave sugar. This can stay with me for another 1-2 days. I can eat nuts, fruit, etc... to try and kill the craving, but it takes time. This week it's taken me till today to get myself back on course. It's…
  • Lift 3-4 times a week split between upper and lower body. Intervals running twice a week, done after lifting - used to row, try and run now Running another twice a week. Cycle - either commuting 1-2 times a week and a long cycle for fun with OH every other week. I've just signed up to a triathlon, so I'm going to add in a…
  • I have to sign up to something that I can't do and the thought of not being able to finish it gets me out the door on a regular basis. Started running last November, did the 5km jingle bell run in 40 min. Then did another 1-2 5k races in the new year. Found myself sitting at home a bit more, so signed up to a 10km, did…
  • Try and have 1 complete rest day, no lifting/running/swimming/cycling - I'll still go out for a walk, but that's it. stay on track with exercise.
  • I suggest that you eat more for breakfast, before you find the chocolate. Specifically something with protein in it. Try scrambled eggs with some salmon + advocado + tomato. Trust me, you won't be hungry after that. Protein and the healthy fats in the advocado will help to fill you and keep you full. It's hard to say what…
  • Different flavoured herbal teas, hot or cold. Most are really nice cold. At the moment I'm on ginger and lemon, peppermint, berrys. I also just add mint/cucumber in to water.
  • Don't worry about the kids too much, kids know when things aren't quite right and understand. I remember losing 3 grandparents + number of miscarriages in the family when I was young and being aware of my parents emotions. Kids just know that you're sad. Like was said, it's very personal, everyone grieves differently. When…
  • Good luck on your journey. It's up to you. You can eat the junk and stay as you are, factor in a small amount of it and change, or just omit it fully if that's easier. It can be done, have a look at the success stories! Find someone who lost a similar amount of weight that you want to lose and use them as motivation.
  • Wow, great list - as if I don't already spend enough time on the pc. Need to step away from the computer and get me some fresh air.
  • Breakfast: turkey + mince chili, pumpkin seeds + raisins Lunch: smoked salmon/advocado/red pepper/celery/vinagrette Dinner: ratatouille + cod Snack: apple/nuts
  • You can buy a gel cover for the seat of the bike. But I don't find I need it, some people say it can make it worse. I have padded cycling shorts, but really i only use those for longer cycles + If I was just heading in to work I wouldn't bother (10 km) If I head out for a long cycle it's generally 40km or so. But really I…
  • I don't eat canned soups - ever! All my soups start with, and onion/celery/carrot/garlic fried up with herbs/spices if required. Sometimes I chop up a huge container and freeze it, I will cook just a handful from frozen. Then add stock + veg and simmer till veg soft. blend and good to go. Some of the combinations I use:…
