  • Just starting my first marathon cycle - and first time using Hanson's Beginner plan - can't offer any advice, but am also trying to trust the plan. Interested to hear what more experienced runners have to say.
  • Not that "canted" is incorrect, but the curvature of a road surface is referred to technically as its camber camber (ˈkæmbə) — n 1. a slight upward curve to the centre of the surface of a road, ship's deck, etc 2. another name for bank 3. an outward inclination of the front wheels of a road vehicle so that they are…
  • I think you could do it, but the concern I have is your statement about "a reasonable pace"... with a short timeline from your current training level to race day, I'd say you need to decide on either completing the 13.1 mile race OR running longer distances at a relatively fast pace - trying to do both increasing distance…
  • Awesome! Love Mark Remy.
  • Time to get in for July. Training plans call for 150 - formal plan for my first marathon starts on July 21. Gonna actually cut back a bit because June was such a huge month, and be conservative rather than push. Putting in 145 as the goal.
  • Dave, Thanks so much for continuing to do this each month. Thanks in no small part to this challenge and spreadsheet, I ran 6 miles this morning to get to 160 (my goal was 135)... a new all-time monthly mileage high for me by 35 miles! Looking forward to July and the start of my first full marathon training plan!
  • I'd say if you had two 5K ish runs in them with no issues, I would think you can wear them for the 10K without worry. I've never heard of someone having issues with transitioning to compression socks. Last year I started wearing compression calf sleeves about a week before a 10 mile race. I did two runs (one 3 mile and one…
  • I've only had my 620 for a week (previously had a 610) but on my mix of suburban streets and tree lined trails during both clear and very cloudy weather, it has been every bit as accurate as my 610 was. I can't speak to it in an urban setting... I will say that my 610 was always pretty inaccurate as well in "urban canyons"…
  • I'm running my first on November 23rd in Philadelphia. I'm in base building now, with formal training starting in three more weeks. I'm up to 40 - 45 mpw now and feeling very good. Ted
  • Another vote for a SPIbelt. I carry my car key, iPhone, ID, usually a couple of dollars and sometimes a credit card in mine with no problem. I can usually squeeze in a gu or two if I need to, but for runs that long, I generally carry a hand-held water bottle that has a pocket I use for the Gus. Ted
  • Hmm... I'm also training for my first full marathon, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but what I'm most concerned about is the opportunity for long runs. With what you describe, your longest continuous run is actually 5 miles (on the way to work)... several times a week. Does your plan have any place in it for long…
  • Great job on getting started... C25K is meant for non-runners, so believe that you can do it and most likely you'll get there. For me, I started C25K in January 2012... I was 307 pounds, 42 years old and hadn't run more than about 50 feet at a stretch in, oh, about 25 years. In short, it changed my life. Since that day,…
  • I started calling myself a runner about 3 months into my running - I had finished C25K and was part way through B210K. I realized that I didn't need the training plan to make me go out and run... I wanted to do it because I loved running. At that point I decided I was a runner, though I still had my doubts. About 5 months…
  • As others have said, losing weight is probably 70% food / 30% exercise. The shorthand that I've used as a mantra (with different levels of success over time) is this: "You can't outrun your diet." (i.e. running won't make you lose weight unless you take care to watch your caloric intake closely)

  • Good questions... never a problem to ask for clarification. The 10% per week rule of thumb applies in general to both total weekly mileage and the long run mileage. It doesn't have to mean that EVERY run increases by 10%... and there is some flexibility that is not a problem in order to keep things in round numbers. For…
  • I've run BIH the last two years (unfortunately, I'm not running it this year because it doesn't fit with my training plan for my first Full). Best advice I can give it to make sure you are running your share of hills in your training. There aren't any killer hills in the course (there are a couple of fairly challenging…
  • Lots of great advice. I'll add my story. I'm a 45 year old male, 5'11". I started running in January 2012 with C25K. At the time I weighed 307 lbs (already down from a high of 347). Thanks to MFP and running, I dropped 77 more pounds and have continued to run. To date, I've run 5 half marathons and am now training for my…
  • Was just coming here to post this. This is awesome! Now I know exactly what to expect on race day for my first marathon! :)
  • I agree with both of the above responses and will also add that varying the distance (and also varying the route, if possible) can also help by changing up the stimulus to your muscles even if your overall distance isn't any higher. I've been doing the RWRunStreak this month in prep to enter into my formal training plan…
  • Running shorter distances generally means you CAN run faster, but it is not a good idea to try to keep that faster pace as you add miles back in... that's where injury is likely to occur. For the first two years, I always ran that what I considered a "sustainable" pace. Whatever distance I was running, I was generally able…
  • I'll fourth it. The B-I-H Half in 2012 was my first HM (little did I know just how challenging the course was for a first timer)... and I ran it again last year. I'm a bit bummed I won't be running it this year (though I plan to do the 5K the night before and the bike ride the day of the HM)... but it doesn't fit well with…
  • Increasing frequency and distance at the same time can be a challenge, so I think it was a good thing to back off when you are trying to get to running daily... but going from 3 days a week of running to 7 days a week in one shot is a big leap, no matter how you slice it. One big question for you - what is your pace like…
  • For my HMs I have used Hal Higdon's Novice 2 HM plan... usually with some extra mileage thrown in. For the Full, I have been debating between Higdon's Intermediate 2 or the Hanson Brothers' Beginner plan. I've decided on Hansons beginner plan. It is going to be a challenge... I've only run one 40 mile week so far in my…
  • Can you do it? Yes, you probably can. Should you do it? Maybe... if you are smart about your training and continue the ramp up to the marathon, you stand a good chance of not hitting any major road blocks. For me, I started C25K in January 2012... and had a very similar trajectory. 5K race in March, 10K race in July, 10…
  • If that 8 mile "longest run" (or at least something very close to it) is recent then I agree that the half is doable. Definitely take it easy and don't go out too fast, but if you can do 8 miles, you can complete the half without it becoming a death march as long as you don't try to race the whole thing flat out. Good luck!
  • Training plan says 135 for June, so that's what my goal is. That'll be a new all-time monthly high (and if everything goes well, it will be the first of 5 straight months with new monthly highs).
  • I haven't used either of them, but I'd recommend that you check out reviews of both devices on www.dcrainmaker.com
  • Hi Jess... great questions. I started running a bit over two years ago, and let me tell you the best way to get faster is to run more miles. You said your longest run is 11 miles and your weekday shorter run is five miles... but you don't say what your weekly mileage is like. How many days a week are you running and what…
  • Based on my own recent experience, I'd agree with Carson. Had been running a lot in the first 3 months of the year - ramping up to a pretty consistent 30+ mpw (up from a previous peak running volume of 20 - 22mpw last summer/fall). I got a lot faster as the miles accumulated. I had a bout with plantar fasciitis that hurt…
  • Nice! Enjoy the new watch!
