  • The estimates of VO2Max from a Garmin are table-based with speed, distance, HR and HR-V (Heart Rate Variability) as inputs. They are just estimates and may be significantly off from the real numbers that a laboratory test would provide. I use those types of numbers as strictly a relative guide. I track my VO2Max with my…
  • For me, after my only marathon back in November, I walked 2 miles a day for the two days after the race and then did one very easy mile on the third day. Day 4 post marathon was Thanksgiving and I had a turkey trot 5K - did it very slowly, but felt no soreness. I ran a couple of miles a day for about the next 4 or 5 days…
  • You definitely have time... both before the first half and between the half and the 10 miler. I think you are right that the biggest challenge is getting ready for the half by May 3rd, but it is doable. You actually have just a bit less than 4 months to ramp up (May 3rd is 15 weeks from yesterday) but most half plans are…
  • Without having any more info than what you posted here, I obviously can't say for certain, but I would bet real money that your max HR is somewhere well above 185. The "rule of thumb" type rules for Max HR based on gender/age are really not very accurate. For myself, I am a 45 YO male and based on the old 220-age, but…
  • Part of me wants to vehemently disagree with Carson, but no matter what I do, I just can't discount his opinion on when to train for a marathon. I say this from the perspective of making 2014 all about running my first full marathon as a relative newcomer to running (I started running in January 2012 and by the end of 2013…
  • I completed 1472 miles in 2014 (up from 666 miles in 2013). My goal at the start of the year was 1400, so I'm pleased with that, but after my marathon on 11/23, I was at 1413 and really wanted to hit 1500 as a nice round number. Didn't happen as I was a bit burnt out and really needed the time off in December - both…
  • I missed my goal in November, as I tapered much more steeply than planned in the last two weeks before my marathon. The good news with that is that my legs feel great and I feel almost fully recovered already (10 days out). Hard to tell what I want as a goal for December... I have an easy month planned, but I also plan to…
  • 2014 was the year of the marathon for me. I planned it from January 1, trained all year and finished my first Marathon 10 days ago (Philly on Nov. 23rd). 2015 is a year to go back to the shorter distances. I'd like to see if I can PR in the Half Marathon (current PR is from 2012 - 2:28:15)... I think that should be easily…
  • Just updated the spreadsheet and found that the week's recovery runs after my marathon got me to 3000 miles since I started running - currently 3012!
  • I did my first full on Sunday. It was not what I was hoping for, but oddly was totally satisfying. Being my first, I had two goals: 1) Finish the thing 2) Not to death march at the end I had a time goal too, of course, but it was entirely secondary (tertiary?). I had indications in training that I could reasonably go for…
  • Haven't run a full in my Vibrams, but ran almost exclusively in them until midway through my training cycle for my first full (ran the race yesterday). Lots of miles in them including 7 Half Marathons. I found for me, once I got beyond about 15 miles the pounding got to be too much and I needed some cushion. I went with…
  • November plan includes my first full marathon... total for the month is 182 including 12 miles in the week after the marathon... I think I'll put the total amount in there, but I'll be happy with ANY running that week after the full.
  • Well, I fell short of the goal of 224, but finished with 206 - which is 42 miles more than my previous highest month ever (26%).... can't complain. I finished the month uninjured and in great shape for my first marathon in three (!) more weeks.
  • I agree with ekat120... Now that my long runs are in the high teens for my marathon training, the 8 - 12 mile runs are no big deal (which is a good thing because my marathon plan has me running three 8 - 12 mile runs each week in addition to my long run!). I even have reached the point now where I can go without any fuel…
  • It is an interesting issue. I am totally against for-profit companies depending on volunteers in order to stage races. I am co-director of a VERY small annual 5K staged by my church. We are planning our 3rd annual race - hoping to step up from 100 - 120 runners to something in the 250 - 400 range if we can get the…
  • I have been training for my first marathon and as a consequence running longer and longer distance. Partly as a way to experiment, I started trying to extend the distance I can run without water or fuel (in cool, early morning conditions where I'm not sweating too much from the heat/humidity)... this morning I had a new…
  • I have a Petzl Tika XP2... great light. Rechargeable, lightweight and long battery life. Going into my 3rd winter with it with no complaints at all.
  • Agreed Dave... I really dislike that change. :(
  • My marathon is in late November, so October is my peak training month. 224 miles (which will actually be a new all time high by 60 miles) I didn't make the 186 I had planned for this month, but I think I have the difficulties behind me and am feel good going into my last 7 weeks of training.
  • Decided to race a HM last minute instead of running more easy training mileage and then overdid it on my next long run and had a reduced week following that. I didn't make my goal, but nearly had my highest mileage month ever. I'm back on track with my training at this point, and hoping for a HUGE month in October if I can…
  • Indeed, it is! My fastest mile (single) ever took me nearly twice as long to run as the AVERAGE of the new world record... just about 9 minutes!
  • Not that I'm weighing in on the likelihood of a 2hr marathon in our lifetime (though I think it is possible with the right conditions), but I'd just like to point out that running 26.2 miles in 2 hours means that the average pace would be 13.11 mph not 13.9 mph
  • I went through the exact same thing in 2012... I went from C25K through 10K and up to HM within 6 months of starting running always with a written out plan ahead of me. I literally was in the shower in my hotel room after the first HM when the thought occurred to me "now what?" The real answer is - whatever you want!…
  • Sounds like a good plan to me... the only possible tweak I would make would be to swap the 1 mile on October 1 with October 2. For me the important part of the taper is the overall amount of rest in the week - not necessarily a block of time off... I feel better when I'm at the peak of a training plan and getting ready to…
  • I'll join the chorus agreeing with this. I'm training for my first marathon now, and I definitely have a goal time... it is SLOW, but it is there. I didn't have goal times for my first 5k, 10k, 7 mile or 10 mile races... They were all just "get to the finish line without injury or heat stroke" kind of races for me. When I…
  • It occurred to me while I was out running this morning what the weird math is that Garmin Connect is doing. It is taking your total time for the PR, considering it to be meters and then displaying it as feet... 1 meter = 3.28 feet so in its weird twisted mind 1 second = 1 meter = 3.28 feet so 330 seconds for your mile PR =…
  • Very very odd... on my Connect records widget, the place that is showing feet shows the total time. Based on the distances of your PRs and the avg. pace (which appears to be correct) in your PRs, it looks like there is some weird calculation and then conversion of units error going on. The # of ft being displayed appears…
  • First... see your doctor about it again (I assume you did before since you got a cortisone shot) Second, I have found that just resting is not the best way to treat PF. I have only had one mild bout with PF since I started running, so this might not be the best example to compare to, but I found that a combination of…
  • Vacation got in the way of running (though hiking, swimming and snorkeling in Hawaii made up for it) - so I only got about 130 out of my 145 goal for August. I'm a slave to the Hanson beginner plan from now until November 23rd (Philly Marathon)... I just added up the miles for September: 186! Yikes... that is a 25 mile new…
  • I'll second this... unless you have a local specialty running store that is knowledgeable and open to the possibilities of minimalist running shoes (i.e. one that actually carries minimalist shoes and has staff that run in them) then it is very hard to get good local advice on minimalist running - even at a specialty store.
