I did a post yestreday becuase I did a DXA Scan. It's a low level Xray scan of the entire body and it cost $85. It produces a 4 page report that also tells you how your bone density is doing. It even goes so far as to tell you your % fat in your arms, legs, trunk and hips and butt and besides the whole body #'s. All in all…

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area so I did a Google search on DXA and an office in Redwood City came up so that's where I went. I called and made an appointment and went in. All in all it was very easy and from everything I have read the accuracy of DXA is very, very good. Much better then scales or caliperss.

As someone who has gained over 100 lbs, lost over 100lbs gained 80 pounds, lost 80 pounds, gained 40 pounds and is now down 20 of those pounds I feel your pain! Best thing that seems to work for me is a planned cheat day. I either do 1 Cheat Meal every week OR have an entire Cheat Day once every 2 weeks. This seems to…

Wow...lots of opinions as always. I'll try and quickly recap my experience. I started working with a nutritionist a couple of years ago to help me with weight loss and to lower my cholesteral. She recommended I try Gluten Free as I was having various aches and pains from my heavy weight lifting that she thought could be…

As somone who tore their Anterior Tibual Tendon I feel your pain! :) There is a new machine at my gym but I can't remember the name of it. It's like a cycle except for your arms. So you sit on a seat and instead of pedling with your feet you "peddle" with your arms. You can change the traction to make it easier or harder…

Awesome Job! Congratulations on your success!

Biogensis has great bars in various flafors (I buy them on Amazon) that are whole food bars with no chemicals and are gluten free. Not cheap but super high quality, taste pretty good and are highly recommended by a couple of nutritionists I know.

I just bought the starter kit today at work so I haven't had a chance to really go through it yet in detail. Did you get any replies to your question? This looks like it's going to be tough to implement but I'm definitely game if I can make the time in my schedule. I was hoping it had a very detailed plan so I didn't have…

My Health Club in Oakland offers VO2 testing for $100 and they use a spinning cycle, but you also have to buy your own face mask as they have you breath into a tube connected to a notebook computer to calculate the V02 based on the gas mixture of what your exhaling. They push you pretty hard on the spinning cycle to get a…

I work to have a high protein breakfast (30 grams of protein or more) as that seems to keep my cravings down throughout the day. What I do is bring a 2 hard boiled eggs and a chicken apple sausage to work with a piece of rice bread. I microwave the sausage and toast the bread and I'm good to go.

Thanks for forming this group! I got the wine bug in the 90's and live only an hour or so away from Napa. After I got a house in the Oakland hills I turned an underground dark room into a wine cellar and have spent the last 15 years stocking it with bottles of Red Wine from all over the world (though a majority of it is…

Well as both a fatty and a muscle head I can share what I have found works for me. I'm currently 54 years old am 5' 9" and at the beginning of April weighed 267 pounds. Today I'm 244. I've dropped the weight with almost no muscle loss (yes my arms a 1/2" smaller but more muscular and my waist is down 4 inches) but better…

I have been doing low to no carbs for a very long time (20+ years). Started with Protein Power, then Atkins then you name the diet as long as it says no carbs it seemed to work for me. However with age comes a bit of wisdom (at least on how my own body reacts). With regards to cutting out bread, baked goods, white rice,…

I just got a fit bit too a couple of weeks ago and am noticing the same issues you are seeing. Basiclly I let it sync and see what comes over to MFP. If it's not right then I adjust MFP as the interface says all adjustments need to be done here. Not sure why it doesn't always work and I have plut a request for help on the…

Well I log a certain pleasurable chore as "Cardio" but unfortunately it doesn't happen as often as I would like! :)

So I live in the Bay Area and can give you some thigns to do In Berkeley - walk along Shattuck Ave near the university (take Shattuck BART station - bart is our subway). After a walk there on Saturday or Sunday you will know why they call it Bezerkley! Berkeley Hills - if you have a car go upl to some of the parks in the…

Actually my workouts now take about 1/2 as long as they used to. I've dropped the # of sets AND dropped the reps. But this won't work unless you push really hard to increase the weight. The logic for this type of working out is muscles won't get stimulated by lots of reps with a low weight. They get stimulated (torn up) by…

Perhaps I can share my experience. I've been lifting for over 30 years and even though I'm in my 50's now I've added some great mass to my arms over the past year that might even exceed what I did in my 20's. In the past year both due to work travel and reading about Mike Metzner and Dorian Yates I've reduced my # of…

I've used allot of Protein powders over the past 25 years and the best I've ever had is Metagenics Bio Pure. You can get it on Amazon as it's not available at many places. It's an extremely clean protein from organic sheep and it is not treated with heat or chemicals so it maintains all the great health benfeits. Also…

Hi There, As someone who's been dieting for pretty much my whole life I think I can offer some advice. 1st off I would read the 4 hour body by Tim Ferriss. He provides some really great insight that took me over 20 years to figure out. Check out his comments on Refeed. I've lost over 100lbs at one point (put 50 of that…

As someone who has used protein supplements for over 20 years and tried many different kinds I would recommend Metagenics BioPure. I have purchased cheap bulk protein before from Costco or wherever and noticed things like I would get constipated or become gassy or just not feel that great after I would do a protein drink.…
