  • I saw this post and had to reply as I JUST had Both a DEXA Scan AND A resting V02 Test done yesterday. #1 - I would recommend this 2x a year. Also I checked Groupon and each test was $150 list but Groupon had the test for $79 each!! So I bought the tests on groupon and then called and scheduled an appt. it was easy. #2 -…
  • IF you can afford it look into Jumpstart MD. They recommend the Keto diet and the weekly check in can plus the monthly body composition can be really helpful. But it can cost nearly $350 a month so it's not cheap.
  • Couple comments - #1 - has your clothes gotten loser? Sometimes if your working out well you can pickup some muscle and water that offsets the fat loss so you weigh the same but you lose inches. Love that you do heavy lifting which I love and do 3x a week. Are you taking measurements to see if your losing inches? OR You…
  • And FYI...see if you have a Planet Fitness nearby. Their standard membership is $10 a month.
  • I have a long commute through terrible traffic so what I now do is getup at 4 45am and I'm in the car at 5am. I then get to the office by 6am (instead of the 90 min. to 2 hour drive if I left at 6 30) and I stop at a nearby gym for a morning workout and shower and then I'm at my desk by 8. I never worked out in the morning…
  • High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) works best for me as well as making sure I'm in a calorie deficit. I've learned that I can't out exercise my mouth. My challenge with HIIT is it's hard and I don't like to do it. But I found a gym with an Indoor Rowing Class (they also do group spinning on bikes). Indoor Rowing on an…
  • Are you working out allot? If your losing inches but not weight perhaps your losing fat (ie inches) but gaining muscle (which adds weight). I initially lost over 100 lbs but over 2 years gained back over 70 lbs and increased my waist by 12 inches. I restarted MFP in Feb. of this year and increased my exercise quite a bit…
  • One last comment - Buy a polar watch and heart strap and wear it all day on a few of your exercise days but also on rest days. It uses your actual heart rate along with your profile of Age, Sex, Weight to determine your TDEE. What I found was it gave me a # that was 20 to 30% lower then what the on line charts were…
  • I like HALT too. I find I overeat when I'm over hungry OR had too many sugary carbs. So foods high in fat keep me satiated. If I'm going out to a place where I know I'm going to be offered lots of sweet foods I'm sure to eat a snack of protein and cheese either right before I leave the house or in the car on my way there.…
  • My friend who is an over 60 Competetive Bodybuilder says Stretching right before or during a workout is counter productive. It actually weakens the muscle and will reduce the weight you can lift. He does stretch on his days off from lifting along with his cardio work. But if you want to get big his motto is Lift Big (but…
  • Been there and done that! I actually fell off the wagon for 3 years and went from 217 to 283 with almost no working out. After my Doctor yelled at me after my last checkup I got my S__t back together. So all I can share is what worked for me. #1 - I focused on the diet. Low Carb, high protein. For ME it reduced my…
  • Actually I somewhat disagree. Yes it's all about the calorie deficit but how and what you eat can help or hurt you. For instance - don't skip breakfast! Make sure you get protein and fats and not just carbs. Eating in the morning will accelerate your metabolism (ie help you burn more calories) AND reduce cravings and give…
  • WOW! Lots of comments! I'll just share my experience of going very low carb. It works for me but I'm sure this doesn't work for everyone. Starting weight 282 on Feb 15, 2017. Blood tests showed multiple elevated levels associated with pre-diabetes. I was also suffering from joint and foot pain (Plantar F.) which was…
  • Unfortunately in the same boat. Not near my peak but in the past 9 months have gained over 40 pounds. Doing better on the exercise but working through a 2nd shoulder injury and the lack of sleep has really put me in a poor mood and bad eating habits. working on it now!
  • Replace all the sweets with protein. Eat bacon, sausages, roast beef, eggs anything that doesn't have sugar and eat as much as you want to get full. I have the same relationship withy Sugar. It's hard for me to do even a little. Because before I know it a little becomes allot. So what works for me is to overeat protein. I…
  • I've been into weightlifting / body building since High School which is now 25 years ago! Best thing I've ever did was hire a trainer (actually been through several of them as my goals have changed and progressed over the years). For a beginner a trainer can be a life saver. A good trainer will focus you on the core…
  • Yep..it's Water. I've been doing low carb forever and it's what works for me. Sugar is my enemy in many many ways. Another tip my doctor gave me is add Fiber to your diet. I add a teaspoon of a fiber supplement to a glass of water with breakfast and another at dinner. I have also kept increasing my green veges as this adds…
  • I've been lifting weights off and on for 30 years and have gone through TONS of plateaus. I have found something that works but it's very hard for me to do. I take 1 or 2 weeks OFF from all lifting. I do light cardio, stretching, yoga, Pilates but NO lifting. After the break of 7 to 14 days I come back with a NEW /…
  • This Recommendation works for me. Good Fat (not trans fats in bread) and good quality Protein will help to keep you full longer. Stay away from sugar and high glycemic carbs and if your like me the cravings will decrease in 1 to 2 weeks. Good Luck!
  • I have been doing protein shakes for 20+ years and the best protein powder that works for me is Biogenics BioPure Whey Protein. It's unflavored and no artificial ingredients. Also the whey was not treated with chemicals OR heat (both can damage the protein and make it unusable for your body). I was talking with a…
  • I love mine but have lost 4 of them over time. I now buy them on Craigs list as people get them as gifts or get tired of using it. Just make sure it's working by pressing the button and seeing it display before you hand over the cash. I think they are great and do help me to walk more.
  • Perhaps sharing my experience might help? I have a stressful job and I've been compensating for what's going on at work with more and more exercise. But I was slowly gaining weight even though I was trying to be careful with my eating (but I was eating out almost every meal) AND I kept increasing my exercise. A friend of…
  • I can't Out Exercise my Mouth!
  • Please go see a Doctor and get checked for Diverticulitis or Appendicitis. I do eat Gluten free and have allot of benefit from it but I started doing Gluten free due to pain in my stomach and Abdomen. Things got progressively worse until I had a colonoscopy and they found I had acute Diverticulitis and have to have surgery…
  • Ummm...I think that's called "Heaven"
  • I started working with a new trainer 3 months ago and have gone to 6 meals a day for the past 3 months and dropped another 20 lbs even though he had me decrease the amount of exercise I was doing (he felt I was over doing things and ultimately it was counter productive. I would argue with him but he was right. I feel tons…
  • CONGRATULATIONS! All the hard work has paid off!
  • DO NOT EAT ANYTHING SWEET! Eat Protein. As much as you need until you get through all the cravings. Which for me takes 2 weeks. Cravings are often triggered by low blood sugar due to eating sugar. Overdo the Protein is my advice until your cravings settle down. Good luck!
  • I hit a plateau a bit over 2 months ago and started working with a new trainer. he had me change EVERYTHING I was doing. Our bodies adapt to the exercise and food we do so everything becomes less effective overtime. He had me cut way back on my exercise as I was going in 1 to 2x a day to do cardio and lifting and he felt…
