  • Well, the first time it was because I was lazy. I was on my computer all day and ate 2 meals, lunch and dinner, and then ate other 'junk' until I went to bed. I also ate the wrong kind of foods. Mostly frozen dinners, pizza, ice cream, canned soups, etc. I lost 40 pounds by walking 2-4 miles per day, and eating mostly…
  • This...you can walk or run outside in any weather, just dress for it!
  • Just one of many reasons people regain.. I didn't gain all of mine back, but almost 25lbs of 40 lost. It was due to illness and taking meds that made me feel like I was starving 24/7 and I wasn't capable of walking 15 feet without being in agonizing pain. I feel like a failure and I'm embarrassed to run into people who saw…
  • Try eating more protein than carbs with each meal. What works best for me when I'm trying to gain muscle weight is to aim for a plate with 1/2 lean protein, 1/4 carbs and 1/4 vegetables. If I want even fewer carbs, I'll go with half protein and half veggies for at least one meal. I also try to have protein for snacks, such…
  • Maybe you're trying too hard? I know that when I finally got serious about losing the weight, I told myself that I would just walk every single day for 15 minutes, minimum. I knew that I could easily do that and that perhaps I wouldn't get burnt out on workouts. It worked. I ended up walking 40 minutes most days. I stuck…
  • I didn't watch my macros at all and lost 40lbs in 4 months by walking 4 miles a day and eating 1200-1400 cals. I have since gained 20 of it back due to health issues & prednisone (ack) and not being able to work out since spring. I plan on losing it just as quickly and actually just started walking again yesterday. The one…
  • We were much more active. Being a 'child' in the 70's, I rode my bike all the time and walked everywhere. We had a tv but it only had 3 channels... Nothing was super-sized. We didn't snack, nor did we have our moms bring cookies, granola bars and juice boxes to our sporting events. We drank water. We spent money on weed…
  • I have the pleasure of knowing one of these fine 'young' men and it doesn't surprise me at all. :) So cute!
  • Try using whole grain, old fashioned oats or steel cut oats instead. The problem with the packages of oatmeal is that the oats are pulverized, they add sugar, salt, etc. Yes they are convenient but regular old oatmeal will take longer to digest and will keep you feeling full longer. The whole grain oats ( 1/2 cup dry) only…
  • These are all great tips! Thank you.
  • Congrats on your weight loss! Here are my thoughts. I think that if you don't already have some, have someone else take full body pictures of you so you can get a better idea of what you really look like. Standing in a hallway, bathroom mirror, holding the phone out in front of you doesn't cut it. As long as you look…
  • First of all, you probably should find out what is wrong with your knee so you don't damage it more with exercise. In most cases exercise will help the issue. I did exactly that! I started out walking 10 minutes on my treadmill at a veryyy slow pace of 2mph @180lbs, 5ft 3 inches tall, with horrible, crunching knee pain…
  • Don't use anything canned. Nothing 'processed' as in a box, unless it is something in it's natural form, such as dried beans. Nothing frozen unless its fruit or vegetables without added sauces. Be careful with sauces, mustards. They are loaded with sodium. I try to cook most meals and avoid ingredients with any added…
  • I'm in IL, but I travel to West Bend, WI very often! FR sent.
  • Nothing. I hate it! Yuck
  • Your health is worth the effort..... Most of my basic stuff, like oats, bread, coffee, veggies, fruits, lean meats, etc., that I use often are in my 'most recent' items, so it doesn't take much time at all. I use the 'copy meal' for leftover andI also scan barcodes, if I eat anything that has one.
  • Good question. I have another... Why do the chicken commercials (Tyson I think, idk for sure) say that their chickens are fed a vegetarian diet only?
  • I am only supposed to have 1500mg or less, so I gradually phased out a lot of stuff. I guess I'll just make a list of different things I did. First, I quit eating canned soup, frozen dinners and most anything else that was processed or in a box, such as mac n cheese, instant potatoes, etc. I buy fresh or frozen vegetables,…
  • I think I like Jackson the best. I know a few awesome German shepherds named Triton, Earl and Jake. The only male dog I ever had was a little Lhasa poo named Max. All the others are females, including my chocolate lab I have now, named Hazel. Enjoy your new family member!
  • I did it for 24 hours just to get an idea of what I burned during sleep/inactivity. It was shocking to find out I only burned about 52 calories per hour! So, yeah you could, but I think it would be a waste of your battery and unnecessary to use it 24/7. Edited to add that I used a Polar Ft4 during my experiment. :)
  • Hello and welcome to MFP! I'm a female and a 'bit' older (52), but I have about 30lbs to lose. I've been on MFP for over a year and it's awesome! There are a lot of tools on here to help you change your lifestyle for the better and to get healthy again. I'd be happy to help you along. A lot of my pals have already lost…
  • I took a break that didn't end. Now I have 20lbs to lose AGAIN. Good luck, I hope it works out for you.
  • Not unless it has sodium in it, since I try to watch that.
  • I lost 40lbs in 4 months by eating 1200 calories and walking 3 miles a day. Then I bought a HRM and gained half of it back because I thought I could eat all of the exercise calories. Welllll now I'm back to 1200, but if I get really hungry, I eat. I'm back to losing again.
  • Well, I suppose they could if there is caffeine in it and caffeine raises your heart rate for a bit, but it would be a LOT cheaper to just consume caffeine in coffee or tea. You'd be better off to go for a walk. :) Also, I was flipping through channels on tv and saw Dr. Oz say that he does not endorse any type of…
  • On my non-running days I do a variety of things. Biking, walking, water aerobics, swimming, hiking, weight training, heavy gardening, yard work and even scrubbing floors & cleaning house like a madwoman. Yesterday was a non run day so I hiked 5 miles, scrubbed 3 huge, filthy trash cans (that took me an hour!), then swam…
  • Would I still lose weight if I added a layer of bacon and put mine on a cheeseburger?
  • I gained weight when I was eating all of my exercise calories, while using a good HRM. Now, I'm being more careful and eating 'extra' calories only when hungry. I think that the problem was that I was relying on the HRM being 100% accurate and while being close to goal, they add up and matter, a lot!
  • Yeah. I wore my HRM while driving, out of curiosity. I think that due to a heightened awareness of surroundings and trying to be on top of things keeps your heart rate up higher than just sitting at home. Mine was higher anyway. I suppose if you suffered from road rage it would be even higher. haha My 'normal' heart rate…
