Just another interesting data point that people may want to hear. It's not necessarily just overweight/obese people that catch flak running outside. As someone who is now in the "normal" BMI range, and is often called "too skinny" by people, I still catch all manner of *kitten* from teenagers driving by. Granted, they may…

Keep in mind that the intimidation issue may be more than simply because they're out of shape. Some people have legitimate anxiety issues that compound the problem *cough* me *cough*. Despite having improved a lot with my running from 3.5 years ago, when I couldn't do 1.5 miles without wretching, I still dont see myself as…

At first I thought this was a serious, albeit silly, question. My retort was going to be "Oxygen - is it overrated?"

Breaking down the 03:23 (actually 03:24 to get to 1:59:59) ends up being 7+ seconds per mile. That might not be a huge number over a shorter distance, but to sustain that over 26.2 is no small feat, even for the top elite talent in the world. The most probably way I'd guess this would happen in the not-too-distant future…

I second the shoes idea. They can get past the "end date" and deteriorate rather quickly in my experience. As a result, you adjust your gait (maybe even without actively realizing it) and start running less efficiently, thereby causing more discomfort, etc. Was there any other change to your routine (other than mileage…

First 26.2 - ING Hartford Marathon - 3:50:19. I missed my goal of sub-3:45, but given that I was fighting bronchitis back for the five days prior, I'll take it. Especially given that 3.5 years ago, 1.5 miles was undoable for me.

Were it not for diet soda, I'd be done for in the evenings. Scoff if you will, but I dont care. I've cleaned up other areas of my diet, include my craft beer hobby. Allow me my aspartame :)

Aroo! Well done!

Nicely done. My first 5K is still my most memorable race. The slowest, but still the most memorable. Now you have a starting point and can improve from there. It becomes quite addictive.

About 50 lbs. Though getting married, having kids, and getting complacent over the course of 10 years may have helped as well.

This should be engraved on a weight loss statue somewhere. Well said.

New one today from a former co-worker I hadn't seen in a year or so. "Wow Pete I didn't recognize you! Damn you really were a fat little troll werent you?" And the ironic thing is that even though I'm a scant 5'7", I'm still taller than this sucker.

I have your back. "psabotka". Warning: I post some disturbing foot injuries from pounding pavement, in addition to some douchey selfies if they have a story or capture an interesting moment. and other random amusing nonsense.

I'd venture a guess that I was easily at 4,000-5,500 or more. And the majority of them were stupid calories. Processed foods, refined sugars, chemical diet sodas, nowhere near enough vegetables or whole foods. I still indulge in the diet sodas and aspartame, but eat a hell of a lot cleaner now, with upwards of 100oz of…

Familiar scenario here. I got to the point of utter disgust with myself a few years back. Since then am down 50lbs or so. Definitely some insecurity issues from my wife since. In moments of honesty, there has been admitted jealousy (though I think it's more like resentment) regarding how I'm able to have made such a…

I fight with this every winter. Central Mass, living in the relative sticks with no sidewalks, and the already narrow roads have even less width with the snow and ice. When I was first starting, I relied on a treadmill, but after a couple of years, I started looking for areas in town, or around my work (slightly larger…

My dog ate my shoes.

Is that it? :)

My effed up toes from running. The blood, blisters, and missing toenails are almost badges of honor.
-
Steady progress in the right direction. Well done.

I have a One. I like it. Looking at a low number is incentive to get up and walk the long way around the building for a coffee. That being said - I think it tends to over-estimate calorie burn. So much so that for a good amount of time, i had it unlinked from MFP because I think it gave me far too many "activity" calories.…

I say this in all honesty. When I see someone hitting the pavement who is a larger person, working hard for each step, I find that more admirable than the people who obviously have been at it for a long time. Starting from scratch is far more difficult than keeping at it after improving. Nothing against people who've…

Either. I gravitate more towards the runner ones because they're kindred spirits. That being said, I won't lie that a compliment (scarce as they are :) from the fairer sex probably means more for the ego. Does that make me a man *kitten*?

I'm a sucker for IPA craft beers. Of course, they're among the highest calorie brews out there. Not a boozer by any means, I go through a six pack a week. I've made them fit into the calorie counts previously, but have kind of plateaued. So I'm doing a no-booze October to see if cutting out the empty calories makes a…

Apologies for piling on, but the other reponses are 100% spot on. Not to discourage you at all, but I couldn't have imagined going from 5K to full marathon in six months. It's been 3.5 years of consistent and gradual increases in distance, base mileage, a bunch of races from 5K to multiple 13.1Ms, and I still have concerns…

I keep coming up with more of these. ...rather than attending to a foot injury, you take a picture of it and put it on instagram as a brag.

The best measure of workload for a given person is measuring how hard that person's cardio-pulmonary system is working though, wouldn't you agree? As such, I believe a heart rate measurement as a percentage between a resting heart rate, and max heart rate, is a key piece of that measurement. I'm not trying to push my…

I can't say for sure, I've only done this for myself. That being said, the fact that RunKeeper itself doesn't use HRM data as part of it's calculation, would make me skeptical of it's calorie estimates for anyone. Just going on record again - I like RunKeeper, I'm not trying to make this a witch hunt. Their site and…

*Deep breath, cracking knuckles* Forgive me while I go into some some excruciatingly painful detail regarding this topic. I've done an exhaustive amount of research, on this, so I figure if it helps anyone, it may be worth the long read :) My personal experience is that RunKeeper, while a great app, grossly overestimates…
