I really screwed up my 26.2 training
Hey people. Just posted this on my feed, but figured I'd share with a wider audience in the hopes of getting some advice or something. So I've been pretty consistent over the year at ~200 miles monthly, with a couple of lower months due to me being a slacker. Did my first 26.2 last October and pulled a 3:50:17. I was…

How do you define a "hilly" course
Just curious what your definition of "hilly" is. Doing the math, many of my runs around work can typically average 1.5 to 2% grade over a 6-7M course. I'd say that some of these definitely feel hilly.

From 3:50+ to 3:15 marathon?
Hey people. So I've got an OCD thing about being able to Boston qualify. I had misread the requirements and thought it was 3:25 for a male 40-44. While a 25min+ improvement is stretching it, I felt it was doable. Finally realized the BQ time for me would actually be 3:15 - a 35min+ improvement. Damn. Assuming I start…

Garmin HRM issues & solution
So anyone who's experienced bad HRM data from their Garmin Forerunner and HRM strap, I've got some good news. I purchased the Polar strap which is plug-compatible with the garmin HRM transmitter, as detailed by DC Rainmaker here: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/08/solution-to-heart-rate-dropoutsspikes.html Using Firstbeat…

Possible to shave 20 minutes off between 1st and 2nd 26.2?
Hey folks, subject says it all. Did my first 26 .2 on 10/12, was just getting over bronchitis and missed my 3:45 goal, came in at 3:50. I'm taking it up a few notches this year, and would love to be able to crack 3:30. Is a 20:00+ improvement a realistic goal? Thanks pete Edited to say: "Is a 20:00+ improvement…

A real doozy at my work gym
So at the gym at work, there's this guy that makes me want to shove knives in my ears. Tall guy, out of shape, talks to other tall, out of shape guys about every aspect of his "workout". So far the only aspect I've seen is him walking around leaning on equipment people are trying to use, while running his mouth about his…

AthLinks
I really like this site for the metrics and ability to track performance. Any other runner-types using it? Feel free to add me - "Pete Sabotka" http://athlinks.com/racer/123570914

Taper madness
So I've got a good number of runner types on my friend list, but for those who aren't, I figured I'd share, as I've gotten a lot out of this group, and would like to give a bit back in a humorous fashion. https://instagram.com/p/fIIJ-iGbuR/embed/

New brand of shoes with < 2 weeks before first 26.2?
Is this just crazy talk? I've been in Brooks Adrenalines since I started 3.5 years ago. Last time at the shoe store, one of the guys pointed out a Saucony Progrid Omni which is similar (stability shoe for overpronation). I gave them a 100m spin, they felt great and are noticeably lighter. I'd love to give them a try, but I…

All my IPAs have been cleared out of the fridge.
They've been offset by copious amounts of diet soda :)

Anyone using Firstbeat Athlete software w/ Garmin
Any runners out there with Garmin Forerunners using the Firstbeat Athlete software? As a data storage engineer by trade, I'm into data - especially data that shows me improving. I'm trying the demo, and it gives a hell of a lot of information from heart rate (METs, calorie burn, EPOC). Even at a rather pricey $85, I'm…

How much improvement after 40?
I've really been giving this a lot of thought over the past year. Started running four years ago. Have made year-over-year improvements, but being 40 now, I'm wondering at what point will the improvements stop? I'd love to be able to eventually do a sub-1:30 HM and be able to BQ a full at 3:15. Here are some benchmark…

Insanity?
Hey people. So I'm a 40-year old within about 7 lbs of my goal weight. Nearly all of my exercise is running, typically around 40 a week, training for my first 26.2 in just about a month. I have started adding core strength work as well, as I've found it's helped my form, and I'm trying to get back what ever muscle I can.…

Anyone doing the ING Hartford Marathon on 10/12?
This will be my first 26.2, and was curious if any other runner types are doing this one as well.

Working with a coach
So I've been running consistently for 3 years, have made some decent progress in terms of speed (1st 5K was 29:00, latest was 21:48) and distance (training for my first marathon), and was tossing around the idea of working with a running coach. Curious to hear of others who are working with a coach, and what your…

Running alone vs group
So I was approached by a couple of guys at work today to join their group of runners - I see them out several times a week, always give a wave or head nod - one of them said "We need someone like you to push us" (never in a million years I'd be though of as a runner at all, let alone one than can push other runners).…

Garmin FR210 heartrate & calorie burn estimate
Hey people. So I just got a Garmin Forerunner 210 with a heart rate monitor, and have started futzing around with it. It links and works, tracks heartrate through the whole activity. But based on my height (5'7"), weight (~150) and age (40), it's giving me calorie burn estimates that are below 100 calories/mile. Whats…

Little brag - 5 mile race results
So I did a 5 mile race yesterday, finished in 35:58. My best pace/time in a race yet. Turns out I finished 13th out of the field of 239, and 2nd in the male 40-49 grouping. I knew I did decent (for me), but I was surprised to have finished that high. I'm getting there!

Weight loss in feet?
Silly question - can your feet actually get less wide with weight loss? Back when I started running (around 50 lbs ago) I was in a wide running shoe. In recent months I've noticed my shoes felt less tight, and actually a little bit big (to the point that I was getting blisters from excess movement. Just got a new pair of…

Afraid to go to maintenance mode
Hey everyone. So I've hit my goal of 50 lbs. Here's my problem - I don't want to up my calories to maintenance mode because I've actually tried eating (what would be my) maintenance calories, and sure enough, the weight goes back on. I'm not being lazy or anything - In fact, my exercise has continued to increase. I'm kind…

Ok runners - do you do it alone, or with a group
Just answered a post about running with someone who paces slower than you by RunnerElizabeth, and it got me thinking about running with people in general - curious how many people prefer running alone, with a group, or a mix of the two. As I answered in that post... I've been asked a couple of times to join a running group…

Calling all joggers (or is it "yoggers", might be soft "j")
So I'm not friends with many people on here, but those who I am, I enjoy seeing people's work out info, especially others pounding pavement as I tend to do from time to time. Feel free to hit me up, I go 6-7 times a week, log everything, and would love to see others putting in the work as well. I keep all my detailed…

Hey runners - Watch? Or HRM with RunKeeper & iPhone?
Hi runners - subject says it all. I've been using RunKeeper since I started back in 2010 and am getting more serious now, have my first 26.2 coming up in October. I'm looking at adding a heart rate monitor to make my training more effective and build some speed, and was curious what HRMs people were using with RunKeeper on…

Little brag: first 13.1 mile race
1:48. Feeling pretty happy with that. Anyone else racing today? If so, kock it dead people!

~42 lbs, before & after
Hi all, I never took an official before & after pic, I'm not big on having pics taken of me with my shirt off, let alone taking one myself :) but came across a pic taken right before i found the MFP app. I didn't realize how much extra chub I was carrying around, not only in my face/neck but my shoulders & chest. Just…

Stuck due to insomnia
Evening (actually morning) everyone, So I'm down ~40 since Feb of this year, only ~5 more to go. As most people who've hit their weight loss goal have probably found, the last few are the toughest, as they say. What's I believe is making my last ~5 even harder to lose is my horrible lack of sleep. It sure as hell can't be…
