I wouldn't start with sugar. It is more likely the heat or dehydration that is making you feel the drag effect. Don't assume it is sugar unless you tested it.

Walking or running on your toes is the best thing to do for calves. Much better than anything in the weight room.

You should look into some form of group fitness class. The negative thoughts have an easier time conquering you when you are alone. In a group fitness class you have other people around you to encourage you. Look around for a "Les Mills" class like Body Combat or Turbo Kick. An hour in there will feel much easier than…
