I'd keep at least one life jacket per person and one extra on hand. Non-skid shoes. Sunscreen. :) For bloating, try to isolate the offending item by adding new items to your diet slowly, so you can figure out what's causing it. Eating smaller quantities of something might be OK while too much will cause problems. Bloating…

Sure, it will work. As long as you are eating at a deficit from your current maintenance, you will lose weight. What deficit you choose is up to you but the appropriate deficit will depend on your current weight and goal weight, since people with more to lose can manage a bigger deficit. General guidelines for maximum…

Weird. If it was me I would probably cut out all new food, then add them back one at a time to see if you can figure out if one of them caused it. Unless it's really bad in which case a visit to the Dr. would be in order. And remember allergies can become worse with each exposure. I think soy is a common allergen. You…

If you can walk, if you have arms and legs, if your heart beats, your kidneys filter your blood, your pancreas releases insulin, if your brain can think, you do not have the worst body ever.

Sorry to hear that, you may just have to do it the old-fashioned way of just looking up the phosphorous content of food and trying to control it that way. http://www.davita.com/kidney-disease/diet-and-nutrition/diet-basics/hidden-phosphorus-in-your-diet-and-how-to-control-it/e/5322

I stopped drinking coffee awhile ago, for me the headaches and inability to do anything but the most basic tasks only lasted for 2-3 days.

That is very exciting and I am jealous! Love your profile pic too. :)

Everyone knew what the OP meant and many did clarify his statement for him. The fact that foods vary in their nutritional benefit is hardly worth starting a thread over. The OP wasn't asking for help or advice on how to allot his calories, he was trying to start an argument. There is plenty of advice on the boards…

I don't think "calories" can be taken as the equivalent of "food" in any context. No one denies nutritional variability. To answer your other question, the body digests and metabolizes different foods differently, and different foods contain different nutrients. Again, no one would argue that. However, the basic unit of…

I don't see anything wrong with it . . . comparing that to your calculations with the net calories, it seems like you are burning around 500 cals a day on average with exercise. Does that seem right? It is still all somewhat of an estimation (both cals consumed and the 3500 cals/lb figure) but for someone very active I…

Guess I'm not feeding a giant worm then
-
^^ nice graph! To the OP, yes, that is your maintenance before exercise (because you are using net calories). If you want your TDEE, which by definition includes exercise, you should do it with gross calories.
-
Yuck. Thanks? I believe you though, my brother and his wife used some sort of product awhile back (Paragon or some clever name like that) and they both passed worms. I'd rather not think about it. ETA to those tin hatting it, it's really not that out there to think we might have parasites of one sort or another, pretty…

Here's a crazy idea -- eat as much chocolate as you want. Chocolate has power over you because you restrict it. What if you just ate it whenever you wanted, as much as you wanted? Sure, you might gain a little bit at first if it puts you over your maintenance calories (and that's a big if), but after a little while, I…

I love it. Mostly, because you said "smackerel". But the rest too. :flowerforyou:

My understanding of NEAT is that it's more the very light activity like fidgeting, pacing, crossing your legs, tapping your foot, typing out posts on MFP  and just generally not sitting still. Not necessarily anything to do with your job or lifestyle. I do think this makes a big difference from person to person. ETA…

Interesting to read the arguments from both sides. I liked this article, linked to from the Fuhrman article http://www.foodrevolution.org/blog/the-truth-about-soy/ It seemed like a balanced analysis and I liked his conclusion that it should not be approached as either a miracle cure or a poison but as something to be eaten…

^^ Agree! Thanks, Flax!

Sure, I'm really not an expert, I just know the math. If you plug your numbers into the TDEE calculator above, at "little to no exercise" your maintenance is 2600. At light exercise, it's 3000. So maybe just pick something in between according to your schedule -- say 2700. It's all an estimate anyway (and calorie counting…

I always thought FedEx courier would be a pretty cool job. You get to be active, see the city, meet people, hopefully people are usually happy to see you, etc. And the uniforms are a lot better than UPS. :)

According to a TDEE calculator like this one http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html Your maintenance requirement is somewhere between 1900-2100. If you're eating around 1400, your deficit is 500-700 cals a day. This would put you on target to lose around 1 lb a week if you had any significant amount of…

That's so cool! Good luck!

I agree with the comments above, I doubt you could fit too much fat into 1200 cals if you are also eating enough protein and some carbs. As mentioned above, sugar really isn't an issue and MFP's sugar limit is very low. What do you consider too much fat? ETA it might help if you opened your diary or told us your goals for…

Sounds great, keep me updated! In the meantime I'll try to find a nice Irish lad so I don't have any problems with work permits... I can also feed, water and provide veterinary care. Ah, networking!

Dog walker. Hey, I could walk dogs for the rescue center ^^ ETA: I actually have my dream job as a wildlife pathologist. But, it isn't dog walking...

That's awesome. If you would like to trade the cakes with a neighboring clan, perhaps I could interest you in some alligator jerky in exchange...

The Camas cake thing was very cool. :drinker:

I think people are simply taking issue with the underlying premise that there is a clear distinction between whole and processed foods. I would also hazard a bet that most people do not believe as a rule that whole foods are more nutritious than processed foods by any definition.
-
The concept that the nutritional value of different food is different hardly seems worth starting a thread over. I keep holding out for some kind of brilliant (or at least interesting) argument on this point but it's probably in the camp of the old "muscle weighs more than fat" debate. Semantics.
-
What exactly do you mean by "not the same"? I think this is a sort of false argument because everyone would agree different foods have different nutritional value but a calorie is just a unit of energy, there aren't really different kinds of units of energy.
