I agree, and would add that the paleo/exclusionary way of eating likely attracts those who feel the need to exert excessive control over their diet, a large part of the ED mentality. If not paleo, they would turn to the cabbage soup diet or the like. The same can be said for IF as well. I do agree it should not have been…

Ooh, something like that looks perfect! Thanks!

I've seen the disposable ones but not re-usable -- that sounds like a good idea, thanks!

I just moved to Wisconsin (from Florida) and have the same question! I think the answer must be some kind of glove liners with heavier gloves on top? I could wear ski gloves but I need dexterity to feed treats to my dog while we're walking and pick up the gifts on the neighbor's lawn...as it is now I have to take my glove…

I love how people jumped on the "yolks are bad" comment and not on the ridiculous premise of your question. Carry on.

Couple things. Don't confuse the "MFP method" and TDEE. You should pick one to use, not switch back and forth between them. MFP determines your maintenance needs based on your daily activity only (no exercise) and takes a deficit off that (in your case, 750 cals a day to lose 1.5 lbs a week). So MFP thinks your maintenance…

I'd be surprised if there are specific studies supporting the -20% number, but basing your deficit on a percentage of your TDEE means that your calorie goal takes your TDEE into account, which is appropriate, and 20% tends to result in a moderate deficit for most people. You will also see other cuts from TDEE (10% even up…

I think bigguy47 hit it on the nose. Recomp is just change in body composition. Although I usually think of it as being done at/around maintenance. I don't think straight up weight loss while lifting would technically qualify as recomp, even though you are changing body composition. I think it specifically means trying to…

You also might be able to try out equipment at a place like Play It Again Sports or similar used sporting goods store. They may also have different styles of exercise bike (upright and recumbent) or different models of machines for comparison.
-
I second the rowing machine suggestion. Best full-body cardio machine. But I also think you should try the machines out before you decide. I hate ellipticals with a passion, I would rather jog in place than use one. Get the one you will use/enjoy most.

Here to represent the veterinarians! I'm a veterinary pathologist. Lots of respect for all of you who care for large, hairless primates on a daily basis.

Incredible!!! And thank you for the report, it is a huge inspiration!

I would recommend seeing a gastroenterologist, or at least a doctor -- it could have nothing to do with your diet.
-
Just remember that calculator is saying 2000 cals total and you said 2000 cals net. That means you could be eating 2500 or higher with exercise? Your trainer probably meant total cals rather than net, as the net calorie concept is pretty meaningless.

You look fantastic! I also love your rabbit house!

Thanks! Somehow I feel like the energy/heat generated by breaking down the fat molecule is an important part of "where the fat goes" and he doesn't really acknowledge it. Although I suppose he is only concerned with where the actual mass/molecules go. Pretty cool to think about.

This is funny! I think you've done a pretty good job diverting it. I would respectfully suggest you have not diverted it to a topic more fitting to the site. Many here struggle with obesity and we all have other people in our lives who do as well. Do you not think looking at the topic from a broader social viewpoint is…

Thermoregulation in the sense of staying within a narrow temperature range, yes, but what determines our basal temperature? I would think heat generated in cellular metabolism would play a role, but I'm not sure. It's probably easily googlabe but I think I will sleep on that mystery tonight...
-
I think he is oversimplifying it a bit. Heat is a byproduct of every chemical reaction because some energy is always lost. Isn't that why our bodies are hot? (and I mean that in every sense of the word)
-
Thinking more about it, I'm a little puzzled why he says part of it is not turned into heat. I understand the units don't match up but the fat contains "calories" as potential energy within the chemical structure, just like dietary fat and carbs which are also made of C, H and O. When the cell breaks down the fatty acid to…

Yep, it should work as long as the difference between your current and goal maintenance is not within the margin of error for your logging. If you are shooting for a 60 cal deficit, that is pretty easily lost in minor logging or measuring discrepancies. Remember also that your maintenance needs may not match the…

Pretty cool!

Wow, America is pretty terrible, huh? I visited Syria in the 90's and was regularly groped by strangers on the street, wasn't allowed out in public without a man to escort me, and had to wear a burka before visiting a mosque, and I still had a better time that you did in the US. But we digress.

First, I would re-evaluate whether you really need to limit yourself to 1200 net cals a day. See link below and make sure your settings and goals are correct. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/819055-setting-your-calorie-and-macro-targets Second, I would recommend swimming or a rowing machine if you have access to…

Exactly, and this is where I think we need to draw the line between being concerned about an issue and blaming individual people. I believe we can have the first without the second.
-
Yes, but it's given as an example of how obesity in a significant portion of the population can drive up health care costs. That's in addition to the effect on insurance premiums of a population more prone to the development of diseases that require expensive treatment. That said, I do NOT think individual people who are…
-
I'm sorry you're offended. To me the debate over whether or not obesity should be considered a public health issue is an interesting one and not meant as offensive to anyone. I think people on both sides have made good arguments, although there may have been a minute in the middle there where it went off the rails a bit...

I'm curious, what's offensive about it?
