So sadly, the easiest way (and honestly most comfortable) is to pay for a hotel near the start/finish line. Trying to get out of that area is a nightmare on race day. I have stayed as far away as the Hilton O'Hare, and believe me, I would have gladly paid the extra 150/night to avoid the hassle. The Hilton Chicago is the…

I can understand being disappointed - its how you feel and that's that. But still, congratulations. If I may quote something cheesy: Also, think of it this way- you paid money to do a 3k run. If you spent the most time out there, you got the best value! And everyone's first race at any distance, unless you are a pro, is…

So downhill running can be very fun if done correctly, and it sounds like you just need to lose your fear of it. Some form tips- lean forward from the hips, not the shoulder. Use your arms for balance. Don't overstride, make sure your feet are landing under your body. Look down the hill and not at your feet. On trails I…

I use coppertone sport sunscreen, but it does sweat off,and re-application on long runs just doesn't work. There is a world of UV-rated clothing out there that can help. Asics makes a hat with a 'sun skirt' to protect the back of your neck. Or you can find super lightweight, breathable fabric in a longsleeve. Brooks made a…

my impression of this thread:

Different reasons to do either. For a flat marathon, a constant pace is probably better (though a negative split is ideal). At some point, maintaining that pace will naturally involve more effort. But for hills I go on effort. For a long run, i really want my effort to be something like 70-80% of max. If I try to maintain…

Are you drunk? None of this makes any sense.

Newbs with low post count, says others are mean, has no examples, get mean themselves. Yeah, that's about right.

No worries, eating is very much personal preference. for an early morning run, I don't usually bother with anything unless I'll be running for 2+hours. If I am, then I'll have a banana or something that will sit well. Toast with peanut butter, etc. Something light. I tend to wait two hours after eating anything substantial…

Can you give an example? I rarely see anything truly abusive here, and when I do it is usually modded into oblivion fairly quickly.
-
That is about teeth. Plz to explain how drinking something acidic will make your already acidic stomach more alkaline.
-
Oh crap, I think I just divided by zero in my bag

Yeah, i read it. That was a really dumb thing to do. eta: running with an injury does not make you 'gritty'. It is not a virtue. As someone else pointed out, we are not pros. There is no Olympic gold on the line. No sponsor will drop you. Your livelihood does not depend on you finishing a race with torn ligaments. Sure, we…

Ah yes, that very 'pro' strategy of suddenly jumping into a run that is more than double the longest you've ever run, months ahead of your training schedule. How could I have forgotten it? No one said she wouldn't be able to finish it, just that its not a really great idea. Why risk injury when there is literally nothing…

What? OP hasn't been training for 9 months...she has run 6.5 miles once (unless I missed an update). I guess I don't understand what point you're trying to make
-
Ha, no that's the thing, i was trained. I wouldn't do the race I was untrained for. Because I would just knock myself out for longer.
-
I'm glad to hear you decided to do the 5k (if they allow bib transfers). Hey, free 5k! And as a counter to the 'I didn't train and I still finished stuff' - i do train for my races. This weekend I had the surprise option of running an ultramarathon (travel plans were delayed, a friend had to drop out of a local race at the…

There is a difference between building up to something, and jumping to it suddenly. I ran 16 miles the week before my last half. Its not something to suggest to a newbie who doesn't have adequate training.
-
I would not advise trying 9.5 miles for the first time a week before an untrained HM. eta: if you want to do the half, your game is now about survival, not best performance. So this week, go out for 3 runs of 3-5ish miles, then *maybe* try a 7 mile run on Sunday. Even that seems long. to me at this point (unless you are…
-
Well, I can tell you the smart thing to do, and I can tell you what I would do. Those of course are two different things  I'm sure you could finish a half. I'm uncertain about how pleasant the experience would be.

If you're morbidly obese, yes. If you're a teenage girl posing as a 92 year old, probably not.
-
Doable? Sure. The best idea? probably not.
-
Congrats! I hope you enjoyed yourself!

I am succeeding in sitting on my couch. Maybe I will take a slow recovery jog/walk later. Only made it about 5000 cals burned for the week. Such a failure.

3582 calories today....for a 50km race with 4500 ft of elevation gain. So yeah, that whole '628 for 28 minutes on the stair climber' is totally in the same ballpark.
-
*pat pat* did you at least make your 1000 calories in that hour?
-
Well it doesn't happen EVERY run, or even often (or it shouldn't, at any rate), which is why its so memorable/hilarious when it does.
-
Yeah people seem to like the whole 'distance runners are so skinny!' thing. But that physique comes from 1) genetics and 2) a very specifically designed training/nutrition program designed solely for a person to run really, really f#*%ing fast for a long period of time. Just like you won't add 20lbs of muscle without some…
