  • you're awesome :) Congrats! :flowerforyou:
  • nope ;) you're not alone! Its mommy's time w her bestie :) Hubby has brought our kiddos to a few events, but its not often that he does so (and i am ok with it). Kids have entered some fun runs (i love this part) but hubby has never entered an event that i've been in and he has never asked me to run one of the (few) events…
  • I've got terrible knees, so i really do appreciate having poles with me when i hike. I wouldn't want to hike again without them now that i carry them :) I had a single pole for a while, then invested in a new pair (of 2). My newer poles are anti-shock... i like the feature and would choose to have it again, but its not on…
  • congratulations on your past completions and great idea to revisit c25k to get back into the swing of things! :) Yay for Week 1, Day 1!! :drinker:
  • http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml there are several variations on this, but this is the one most widely used & accepted... hope that helps :) Also, there are lots of podcasts and aps out there which help with timing, so that may be some of what you're stumbling upon as well. I imagine they are all using…
  • I'm a C25K grad and now a proud member of the "13.1 club" .. I started the c25k program a few months before my 40th birthday, overweight and with bad knees. I'd been walking fairly long distances /fast speeds regularly for several months prior to starting the c25k program, so i had fairly good cardiovascular endurance,…
  • if you plan on being active while in your suit (beach running, paddleboarding, kayaking, waterskiing, volleyball, swimming, frisbee, etc) you'll want more of an athletic cut. I like athleta and titlenine.com ... I have had good luck with my suits from Lands' End and Athleta. I find the Old Navy, WalMart, Target, etc brands…
  • oh and mine DOES have a scale in the ladies locker room (not sure about the men's side, for hopefully obvious reasons! LOL!)
  • I love my Planet Fitness too: plenty of machines and i haven't ever been limited in my time using them (can use the treadmill for over an hour, if i want... at the Y, i was limited to 30 minutes, which sucked). Tons of stregth training machines as well. I find the atmosphere welcoming and i see all sizes, shapes and…
  • i know thyroid function has an impact on weight (gain/loss) but, from what i've read, not to an extreme degree: http://www.thyroidtoday.com/PatientResources/english/Thyroid%20Hormone_E07.pdf
  • hmmm i am usually thinking things like "shoulders down, hands relaxed" and when i should start another interval (if on the treadmill, what incline and speed i want to set my next interval at) or if in a race, i try to calculate my speed, my estimated split/finish times, etc... I do a lot of reminders about form and…
  • Love it! :)
  • yep, my married name has a French 'ch' in the middle of it (think: michelle, machine, cliche, parachute, crochet, chef...). My husband is Lebanese and when registering the family name, the arabic script is transliterated into Latin alphabet letters and seeing how the official languages of Lebanon are Arabic and French, the…
  • I have both YakTrax and Microspikes. The Microspikes are MUCH more aggresive and i can't see running in them (due to the points, not the rubber that attaches to your shoes) unless you were running on a good layer of ice. I've run many miles in my YakTrax and they're wonderful for running, IMO but not so much for hiking.…
  • poptarts: my guilty pleasure! Even if they crumble all to hell, i unzip the bag and dump the crumbles in! If my hands weren't filthy, i'd probably lick my finger to get the tiniest of crumbs to stick to it and stick it in my mouth hahaha :noway: i know that sounds so soooo wrong!
  • i am taking a long-term approach to my weightloss/muscle toning and will vacation at some point (i hope, right?!?! ) but I don't like to think of losing for a specific event.... I've seen too many ppl have unrealistic expectations and frustration, resulting in giving up on goals... IMO, its better just to say "i am…
  • i grew up in the same town as Rachel Ray, and knew her "way back when..." and have seen her several times since she has become famous. Though *i* knew *her*, i was 3 years younger, so i was more friends w her little brother than her, though i admired her style and spunk, even back then! :)
  • I don't know why it resized to the larger image and I got cropped out? Oh well Gonna try that chocolate pudding trick without the marshmallows (not crazy 'bout them unless they are in rice crispy treats! ;) --- which by the way would make EXCELLENT hiking nibbles! yum!
  • I have a pair of nylon/spandex pants (Eddie Bauer?) that have a fleece insulating layer built in. I could wear a baselayer under (or not) depending on my needs. THey are warmer than regular hiking pants, but less so than snowpants. A happy medium. I am sure other brands make similar pants as well...
  • here is a pic from a 2010 camping trip -- base camp was near Marcy Dam (Adirondacks) and we hiked Mount Marcy the day prior. Note the tired looks haha! In the photo: our Jet Boil stove  , our bear canister where we had to pack all of our food and cooking gear (its required in that area), a luxury fresh apple (how we…
  • here are the pics from that album if you have a photo you want to share from an online source, right-click it, click Properties then highlight/copy the Address URL from the properties pop-up, then paste that url here wrapped on both sides with brackets [ ] containing img for the 1st (left) bracket and /img in the 2nd…
  • :drinker: nice! Wish i could go with you, alas i am many states away lol First: i highly recommend a Katadyn water filter (or similar) or Aqua Mira 2-part water purification drops Second: the food! I enjoy instant oats, stove-top stuffing, flavored couscous and things like that that are very lightweight and basically only…
  • do you have a car-accessible "base camp" or are you hiking all of your food/cooking equipment in with you?
  • You will have plenty of fun with the Kahtoola Micro Spikes! I  mine (though i haven't been able to use them yet this winter: no hiking recently and we STILL have no snow! (though there is some snow and plenty of ice on the trails)
  • :flowerforyou: thanks for posting this review: i just used one of these this morning and was intrigued and, no surprise, not totally happy with my results, lol!. I had just finished a cup of coffee and a banana and was chatting w a trainer and he let me try it out. We agreed that my hydration could throw off today's…
  • He has been my champion and my sabateur. He is the one who makes it so i can get out to persue my adventures and the one who sets off a spiral of emotional eating... A roller-coaster, but the love is always there. And we just celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary this week! about 5 years ago, but i  this one! 4…
  • i will have to answer this in terms of what i did when i was successful (as i am just now returning to MFP after a long hiatus where i gained back about 16 pounds)... I lost 71 pounds by eating 6ish "meals" a day. I say 6-ish because its a lot of grazing, i suppose, and generally 3 meals. I faithfully…
  • As I understand it, as you lose weight, you lose a portion of that # from fat and a portion of that # from muscle. Strength training helps preserve the existing muscle while setting you into a good routine for continued success... And you feel healthy and strong, which is all good :)
  • i def. recommend trekking poles (for all seasons!) ... my knees are shot, so they really save me and are worth their weight in gold, IMO! I'm assuming you'll need snowshoes (NH?) and I saw some ppl mention YakTrax... i have some and i like them, but not so much for hiking. For hikes i prefer Kahtoola's MICROspikes Again,…
