Unless a sidewalk/path is sufficiently separated from the road, I am never comfortable running with my back to traffic. I would rather run on the shoulder of a road, facing traffic than on a sidewalk close to the road with my back to traffic.

I posted this recently on a different thread but I thought I posted it here, so I went back and found it because I think it relates to this thread: As a fellow shortie (5'0"), I find it critical to stay very active in order to maintain my weight. If I become sedentary, the pounds go on quickly because eating the required…

Protein pancake: 1 egg, beaten 1 very ripe banana, mashed 1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder Stir together and cook on non-stick skillet with cooking spray. Cook slowly over low heat. Wait until almost cooked through before flipping. I like to eat topped with peanut butter and a bit of wild blueberry jam. Yum.

I would like to get my 5K pace under 7 min/mile, but I am currently trying to keep a nagging hamstring issue from becoming a full blown injury, so I may have to revisit that. At some point I will probably have to accept that aging and PRing are no longer compatible things. But I'm not ready to accept it just yet ;)

I love the smoked paprika and the chipotle chili powder. I also like the Turkish seasoning blend on simple sauteed vegetables. They have several different jerk seasoning blends. I like the one that is specified for fish, but I use it on lots of stuff.

Making it a habit. I can never go off the rails for too long because I don't even feel like myself anymore at that point. Regular exercise and mindful eating is a part of who I am.

Yes, this. Garmin thinks your VO2 Max is decreasing because you haven't been recording many of those types of runs. I wouldn't worry about it. Those long runs will help you to maintain that fitness, if if it doesn't feel like it. That said, just because you are training for a marathon doesn't mean that you need to…

When I first started getting into fitness many years ago, I bought a set of 2,3 and 5 pound weights and a few videos in a series that were popular at the time called "The Firm". These videos combine cardio and strength training using high reps of light weights. They are very effective for beginners and are still in…

There is a "Monthly Running Challenge" thread under the "Challenges" sub-forum that you might be interested in. There are participants of all levels from beginners running less than 20 miles per month to seasoned veterans who run 100+. Everyone sets their own monthly goal and there is no judgement. It is a great way to…

As a fellow shortie (5'0"), I find it critical to stay very active in order to maintain my weight. If I become sedentary, the pounds go on quickly because eating the required portions of food is a huge challenge in a world that is centered around larger people. My solution is to increase the number of calories I can…

It sound to me like you are contradicting your above post where you said that your goal is to be healthier rather than lose weight. You might want to take some time to really think about your goals as they relate to health and fitness. This is step one. Then you can work on a plan on how it is you are going to achieve them.

This is so true. We recently had to move my elderly inlaws from their home. My husband and I were cleaning out the fridge and I took home their local dairy, Broughtons (southeast Ohio and western West Virginia), cottage cheese. It was the most delicious cc I have ever had. Now when we go to look after their house, I always…

I try to make most of my meals heavy on the veggies. Recent favorites include mushrooms, eggplant and bok choy sauteed in garlic and ginger along with salmon filet, all topped with a sauce of soy sauce, rice vinegar and Siracha. I also love to make frittatas or simple egg scrambles with zucchini, mushrooms, onions, peppers…

I am 5'0 and 47 years old. I maintain on 1750 calories per day and am pretty active. This includes running an average of 35 miles per week, walking my dog for 20-30 minutes every day, weight training 1-2 times per week, and keeping active with yard work, house work or other outdoor activities on the weekends. I do not eat…

That might just be the cutest puppy ever.

I think 4:40 is a doable goal. There are tons of predictors out there, but they do make assumptions of very focused and strict training. I think that the formula of doubling your half and adding 15-20 minutes is pretty solid. That said, shaving over 30 minutes off of your PR in one attempt is also a pretty tall order. I…

All of this -100%, with the bold part being the most important.

Anything pickled. I have been a pickling fool lately. I have been putting pickled red onion on everything. I recently had a "plethora of pickled things" appetizer at a restaurant that had the most interesting pickled celery with a fennel seasoning. I am going to try that sometime soon.

I am also running Chicago! My approach to maintaining my weight during marathon training is to eat at my TDEE until my weekly mileage exceeds 40 miles and then I add 70 additional calories per mile over the course of the week. I try to spread my calories out so that I am at my average for the week, but that usually means…

I make this Greek chicken dish from Bobby Flay for guests and everyone seems to enjoy it. I usually use boneless chicken breast instead of whole just to make it easier for guests to eat. I also skewer grape tomatoes and grill because it's easier.…

@HarperAnn6 -Congrats on your incredible weight loss and for keeping it off! I definitely know what you mean about not being able to let your guard down as much as you would like. I honestly believe that is the case with almost everyone and I think that keeping that guard up is what makes maintaining possible.…

I usually eat Greek yogurt or cottage cheese and berries as a snack before my late afternoon workout. Not really easy to eat in the car, but can you eat it before leaving work? That's what I do. Other options are protein bars or beef jerky.

My go to afternoon snack is plain Fage 2% yogurt or cottage cheese and some fresh berries, usually blueberries or raspberries. Lots of protein that keeps me satisfied. Sometimes I add a dab of honey. I agree with the above that protein (and some fat) definitely helps keep me satisfied more than carbs.

Hi. I would like to join this group. After about 7 years in maintenance, my weight has just started to creep above my maintenance range. I need to nip it in the bud because I know how quickly things can spiral out of control! Below is my intro. It has been quite a while since I have been in weight loss mode, so I don't…

I like to top mine with peanut butter and a tiny bit of raspberry or blueberry jam. Funny related story: One morning I made a pancake before work and left it on the counter and my dog heisted it. She has never done that before, but the smell must have been overwhelming. Now, whenever I make them, she shows up within…

Those that drink that much water need to pay EXTRA attention to their electrolytes because the all that water can flush them from your system. Sometimes I think the general weight loss message of "avoid sodium and drink as much water as you can" can be very dangerous without presenting the big picture. Severely low…
