Pondee629 wrote: People riding motorcycles used to wave at each other as they passed. Do they still? Kindred spirits recognizing each other in a friendly way.[/quote] We still do this when passing in opposite directions! Just acknowledging another rider, sort of a "good day" sort of thing. I am actually surprised at how…

I buy all of my running shoes a size larger that my regular foot wear and they work fine. The larger size is used to accomodate the swelling of the feet as we run. A comfortably fit shoe would not be comfortable a couple of miles into a run in my personal case.

Give it a little bit of time and see what happens. I am the total opposite and only work out fasted (first thing in the morning I'm either out for a run or in the gym lifting heavy stuff). Working out after eating makes me feel queasy to say the least but everyone is different.

Hey Rajion! My cardio is running. I run every other day for an hour or a bit more. I lift either 2 or 3 times/week depending on when/or if I take a rest day. I modified Strong Lifts 5X5 to suit my purposes (I follow SL 5X5 workouts but added two more 5X5 or 5X10 sets to each session; equals 5, 5X5s and 2, 5X10s). As time…

I agree with GiddyupTim. Squats are good; weighted squats are better. You might not lose a lot of inches but you will firm up what you are working with, and firm, toned, glutes are better! Exercise strong, eat at a deficit, and you should have no problem losing 5 - 10 lbs in 4 months. Be sure to have a weigh-in-day each…

That is a radical increase in mileage. You added 100% in three weeks when the idea is a Maximum of 10%/week. If I were you I would stop increasing the long run for a while and start adding some additional distance to your short runs (you didn't say how long they are). Maybe add 1/4 or a 1/2 mile to each of the short runs…

Totally enjoy the freedom!!! When mine stopped working I debated replacing it for months and months and now its been almost 2 years and I love not having that thing on my wrist! I've also given up wearing a watch!!! I do wear my I-phone when running and sometimes my Garmin and HRM strap but I only let the phone give me…

Thrilled to hear that you were so successful on your first time trying to run slower!!! Going forward if you want to change the structure try adding time to your running segment. The C25K plan would have you adding about a minute more to the running segments every time you went back out and slowly gets rid of the walking.…

Both! Personally my favorite exercise is running so I run for an hour or more every other day; I lift weights 2 or 3 times/week and do some light cardio afterward (stationary bike for example). I'm not into lifting heavy or gaining a lot of muscle mass. The lifting I do maintains my muscles while I lose weight and…

I log gardening, lawn mowing, and certain household projects (drywall hanging, blacktop sealing, etc.) fairly regularly. Based on my research heavy yard work and gardening are about the same. If you google a question like "how many calories do you burn doing yard work" you should find some good sites that can give you an…

Everyone has abs that are working - just most of us have them hidden under a layer of fat. To see your abs you will need to get down into the 10 - 12% body fat range; really defined abs and you will need to drop to the 6 - 7 % body fat range. I wouldn't hazard a guess as to your particular body fat % but if you would like…

I can't add too much to this other than to stress slow running and recommend the C25K or C210K plans. At 12 minutes/mile you are most likely beyond a conversational pace. I started running 4 years ago using C25K and have run more than 2000 miles since then. I learned the art of slow running the hard way (injury). Having…

I have been suffering with a pinched nerve from a herniated disk in my neck for months now. I am also a big fan of the SL 5X5 program. I no longer do weighted squats with the bar across my shoulders (as this may have caused the problem to begin with) but rather holding it in front at about chin level. Took a little to get…

The only real equipment needed for running is proper running shoes. I agree with everyone that you should get fitted at a good running store (after buying my first pair there I shop for bargains on line for the same or very similar shoes). A decent pair of cross-trainers for everything else. Since I don't Zumba but do…

^^^^ ditto on the non clipping of the weights. Or if you have a Smith Machine do your heaviest lifts on it; as you increase the weights on the Smith Machine you can correspondingly increase the weights on the bench.

I run every other day and lift on the non-running days with some mixed cardio (elliptical, treadmill, rower, etc.). I shoot for 15 - 20 mile weeks and pretty much run on the roads all year (unless they haven't been plowed in the winter at which time I resort to the TM). I take rest days periodically as my body dictates. I…

I shattered my left ankle/leg in three places in a motorcycle mishap back in 2011. I had the same plate and 8 screws put on the fibula as you describe as well as two long screws to secure the bottom of the tibia which had sheared off. 7 months after the first surgery I had the plate and 8 screws removed. Removal stopped…

^^^ Fully agree with @peieroja. I have run both ways but personally start with a short walk (1/8 mile) and then move into a very slow run to get warmed up. I get to speed about one mile into the run and maintain until I am finished with that day's distance/plan. I don't really stretch afterwards either but have heard it is…

I am a fan of Strong Lifts 5x5 but have modified it by adding additional lifts into the program. I always lift first and cardio second (unless I am riding my bicycle to the gym) which makes for better lifting sessions. I run (outside) every other day and much prefer running to other forms of exercise. I also drop the…

@bridget - I do quite a bit of home renovation work as our house is considerably older than yours is. I count 250 cals/hour for construction type work; 150 cals/hour for drywall spackling; 700 cals/hour for digging dirt and gravel. If you google questions similar to "How many calories burned in an hour of construction…

I ran for over a year with my Garmin 225 using pace; this year I switched to HR. What a difference for the better. I am able to train longer and harder using heart rate.

First - this question can really only be answered by her spinal surgeon who knows her issues first hand. Second - my wife has been through a full spinal fusion surgery (T2 - L4 fused; 2 rods, 25 screws) and had 5 of her left ribs removed; 10 years later a 2nd surgery to remove all of the hardware due to complications. She…

And after a few months of not doing laundry everyone that knows you will be getting their cardio too....escaping. To bad spiders aren't capable of smelling or you might be onto something! :)

Definitely do not put a random wedge in your shoe. I did this and ended up with chronic tendonitis in my left ankle. A podiatrist eventually built me orthopedic inserts and recommended stability shoes. My running store claimed to have only two real stability shoes neither of which they recommended for running. The inserts…

I agree with Vlad. I use both a Garmin 220 and the Nike+ phone app. They are very close in measuring both speed and distance outdoors and on the treadmill. The phone app tends to gain about .10 miles over a 5 mile distance. My issue is with the treadmill measurements. We have 4 of them at my small gym and if you set them…

In addition to running I weight train 3x a week. I have modified Strong Lifts 5x5 by adding additional lifts and move from one set to the next without rest periods. Normally do 2 warm up sets followed by 5 at weight. Example: a. weighted squats; bench press; abdominal press; b. Bent row; inclined bench; abdominal press.…

^^^ This. Well stated. If you like to eat you can increase your calories burned by exercising more so you can take in a greater number of calories. But the only way to actually lose weight is by sustaining a calorie deficit over time.

Ditto the recommendation from dinsfamily. I have been fitted several times at running stores and have never walked away with ill fitting shoes....and if I had they would take them back without issue. I have however picked shoes off of the sporting good store's wall that created horrific results. Now I go for a fitting…

I'm on nike+ running.....dougii2 if you want to friend me..... or on MFP for that matter......

I would think that you only want one of them synced so you don't get double the count.....
