If you keep up the workout routine and you are not eating back all of your exercise calories this will reverse itself over time. I had the same thing happen for almost a month after I started lifting. Then in one week 8 pounds disappeared and 2 inches fell off my waist... after that things got pretty much back to normal.…

OP wrote> But now I do have a bad feeling, Go with your gut on this. Talk to your running group about other trails/parks that might be in your area. Syrupspew: Not all women are "taught to be fearful and that strength is masculine and ugly". We raised our daughter the exact opposite of this and gave her the tools to be…

If you think that mowing with a tractor doesn't burn calories please feel free to come mow my lawn for 3 hours or so. Oh, maybe I should really call it an old cow pasture turned green.... There are definitely calories being expended just staying seated on the tractor as it bounces you in all directions, let alone the…

I don't remove mine. They aren't pretty but they aren't hurting anything either....of course I never claimed to have good looking feet anyway......

Currently in the middle of a marathon training plan myself. I am a fan of Gu - particularly the Espresso which is high in caffeine (of course I am a coffee drinker so am used to caffeine) but most all of them work for me. I use one Gu about every 1.5 hours of running which is about double the time that they suggest but it…

Ditto above on the UA 7 inch compression shorts and I wear a large. They do not move. These are the only shorts I wear in the warm weather then I switch to UA full leg compressions tights for the winter.....

Lots of cardio, 3x a week weight training, and eating at a deficit allowed me to lose ~10 pounds a month for a long time. I ate back approximately 1/2 of my exercise calories to insure I was fueling my fitness. This worked wonders for me personally.

I agree with all that has been stated above. Just thought I would share my experience. I too started C25K in Saucony shoes that I picked off the rack at a sporting goods store and absolutely loved them. When I finally got fitted properly at a running store it was obvious that I was over pronating and ended up in a new…

Nice start Harry. I can break the 30 minute mark on a treadmill but running out on the street is another story all together....maybe on a really, really flat course, maybe. Being challenged to run a 5K and being challenged to race against your runner friend are two different issues all together. I don't think you will have…

Considering that 2 years ago I could not run 1/8 of a mile without thinking I was going to die, and now a 10+ mile run doesn't phase me at all, yes I would say I am fit, for me anyway. Definitely fitter than most of those that I work with and most of the other late 50's group that I know. I think icck hit it out of the…

Well that would all depend on how fast your average walking pace is....something you will need to determine. But MFP has paces ranging between 2 and 5 mph under the heading "walking". So for the sake of discussion lets say you determine that 3 mph is a reasonable pace for when you are walking at work and you walk 12000…

I don't carry any unless I'll be out for 1 1/2 hours or more or over an hour in really warm weather.

If you know how many steps you take in x amount of time you can add walking based on the number of steps that you take in a day. There are approximately 2000 steps in a mile; a 15 minute mile is a brisk pace.

I walk about 1/8 mile both pre and post run. After pre walk I start running easy as I slowly get up to the pace I am looking for (within the first 3/4 - 1 mile usually). No stretching to speak of unless something is feeling out of sorts; never stretch when my muscles are cold. With chronic tendonitis in my left ankle I…

I track mileage because the uppers and soles look just fine but the shoes are worn out for running. I get approx. 350 miles with the exception of my Hoka's which I can get about 550 miles out of. I retire them and get another 50 miles or so on short runs only, then they get worn for non running activities. I have 4 pair…

He truly has sisukas! Inspirational to say the least! Thanks for sharing - I will think of this the next time I am having a "tough" run.

I agree with both of the above posts. Lots of these articles coming out lately (or maybe it is the same one in different venues as this seemed very familiar to me). When my doctor tells me that my uncontrolled BP seems to be under perfect control and perhaps we should start lowering the BP med dosage with the intent of…

C - because my cross training consists of strength training although I am toying with the idea of taking the bike out but don't really trust the nuts behind the wheels of the cars - I can avoid most of them by running pre dawn!

Thanks everyone....there were some really nice suggestions posted. I decided to go with the fitletic belt and am eagerly awaiting its arrival in the mail!

I have enjoyed my flex; use it primarily as a step tracker. Wife uses hers to track steps and sleep. Both of us have worn out the wrist bands but I would say they held up well and just wore out because of the extended use. Not sure if I would repurchase but then I'm not sure I would use any other step/fitness tracker…

Move out doors. If you aren't already tracking you can get some really nice phone aps that will do this for you and give you estimated calorie burn. I have always found that I burn more calories outside moving through both time and space than I do on a treadmill where I am only moving through time. If you really think you…

You sound awfully similar to me. You have me by 2.5 inches but I have you by 15 years..... I also follow a modified SL 5x5 routine. I was doing this every other day but have since dropped back to 2x per week to focus more on my long distance running. Rather than modify the actually routine I gave up all of the rest…

This is one version of heaven! Enjoy!

Not an ultra runner (yet) but am training for a marathon 4 days a week. Lift 2 days a week using the SL 5x5 program but have modified it so there are no rest periods between sets. I just move to another lift that is not using the same muscle group (usually) and do another set. I usually get two sets in between each of the…

I am following the Higdon marathon novice 1 progam at the moment, running 4 days a week. I use the Friday rest day and the Sunday cross train day to do some weight training. I circuit train using a modified SL5x5 program where I do other lifting sets instead of resting between the SL sets. I also reduce my SL weight levels…

My wife has severe scoliosis and has had 3 major spinal surgeries because of it. Her entire spine was fused 10 years ago (exception of the neck); one year ago they removed the hardware; 4 months ago they rasped down spinal bone spurs. Before starting any exercise plan you need to talk to your doctor and get recommendations…

1. Mix it up and run them both. Then find more places to run. 2. Go to running store; get fitted; run with less chance of injury. 3. I run almost exclusively in compression tights (winter) or compression shorts (spring, summer, fall). None of mine have worn out. All of my tops and socks are wicking material and again even…

I run, lift, and lose weight. The calorie deficiet is how the weight comes off. The running and lifting just add to the size of the calorie deficiet I choose to have each day and keep me toned and fit. Running is definately my go-to exercise of choice but if you are not watching what you are eating it is most certainly…
