If it bothers you, perhaps have the shake prior to the workout? Great thing about the protein shakes is they metabolize so quickly. Then just eat back whatever remains post workout. It won't be so much then.

You eat 1200 calories and then burn 500 calories leaving you with 700 calories for the day? I think your version of "healthy diet" and ours may differ a little. Yeah, you're gonna see results. Expect hair loss and irritability at the start. Your metabolism will slow down. You will become less tolerant to cold because your…

Weight loss comes when the calories you burn throughout the day exceeds the number of calories you consume. As you do an exercise your body becomes used to doing it, so the effort required is reduced, which reduces the number of calories you burn, although it won't be significant for a while. You can counter this by…

Good tip.

Sugar is a carb. Some carbs are better than others. There are negative effects to spiking your blood sugar too much, which you should be conscious of, but some fruit isn't a big deal.

I'm reminded of the time when I was in college and some friends were trying to get me to drink. They kept pressuring and I kept saying no. Finally, I said, ok I will take a beer. They all cheered like they had just got something grand to happen. Then I poured the beer on the ground. They were PISSED. I said it was my beer,…

Funny, one of the articles I mentioned explicitly mentioned under 1100 calories. 1000 is less than 1100 last time I checked. Of course, what with your medical degree from Harvard Medical, like, you know, the guy who approved this article, I'm sure you have a good reason for opinion.

Here's the thing: technically, you are correct. MOST of the weight loss, meaning more than 50% does not come from muscle. HOWEVER, a much larger proportion of weight loss comes from eating at a low calorie diet than normal, like 25% to 30% of the total weight lost! VLCD also has many detrimental side effects regardless of…

Ok. Here's a study that shows "Calorie restriction enhanced the catabolic response to inactivity by combining greater protein catabolism in the postabsorptive state with an impaired postprandial anabolic utilization of free amino acids." For the layman, catabolic response is when muscles get broken down.…

Doing 60 reps isn't going to make your butt look good. It's just not enough weights to matter. Increase the weight by 5 lbs each time and when you can't hit all your reps, lower them by 2 per set. Do that until you're doing 3 sets of 8. 24 reps still isn't "lifting heavy". Lifting heavy is 3 to 8 reps, max. But 3 sets of 8…

Actually, your brain doesn't use fat at all. It's strictly a glycogen consumer. And since it can't store glycogen on its own it taps into the approx 30g of glycogen stored in your liver to provide fuel. At least, that's what I found out a year ago when I did a search for "What does the brain use for energy."

Use the "circuit training" entry in the cardio section. It's going to be a rough estimate and you can adjust for how much exertion you apply. The problem with a HR monitor in Body Pump is your HR is responding to a mix of Volume Load (which the HRM is designed to measure) and Pressure Load (which it's not designed to…

Very true. One of the side effects of not getting enough food is your body begins to control the ghrelin/leptin process so you aren't distracted by hunger. From an evolutionary standpoint this effect allows you to focus more on securing food. If you were distracted by hunger when the sabertooth was about to attack, it…

On the phone right now so not going to do a bunch of research, but eating at a calorie deficit puts the body in a catabolic state, which means (in terms of muscle) that muscle will get broken down. Remember that your body is a balancing machine. If it's not getting enough food it will do things to limit the amount of…

If I told you I could reduce your weight, but to make it happen I would drill microscopic holes in your bones, so they would be a little more fragile, would you do it? If I told you I could reduce your weight, but in exchange your metabolic process would slow down, so you would take longer to recover from illness and burn…

Remember, any exercise at all is a SUCCESS. Failure is sitting on the couch, doing nothing. Why feel guilty about success? Sure, it may need be the wild success you hoped for. It may not be the same success you were wanting. But so what? It's still helping you out. It's still improving your health. It's still making your…

No reason to be intimidated. If you can't do an exercise, just walk in place, or jog in place, or whatever. It's just a video. It can't see what you're doing :)

Interesting that a place called Planet Fitness doesn't actually want you to be all that fit. The benefits of the deadlift are enormous and there's a reason why it's one of the top 5 exercise moves you can do regardless of your health goals. They do have pretty colors though, so there's that. Maybe look on CL and find an…

Lifting weights is a neuro-muscular function. It uses glycogen in an anaerobic process to provide fuel. Your heart beats faster while certain blood vessels constrict to create a pressure load allowing you to move the weight. Cardio training is a cardio-vascular/cardio-pulmonary function. It combines fat with oxygen in an…

A better idea would be to bump up your lifestyle modifier a notch. For example, if you have it set on Sedentary, you probably aren't. The calorie burn from just standing and taking steps now and then is tough to determine.

Dont let what some stranger *might* think about you get in the way of your goals. Easy as that.

What do you not trust about the guidelines MFP gave you? If you don't like those, there are a number of BMR calcualtions out there that can really help. They take into account age, gender, lean body mass, etc. One of the least accurate methods, but requires the least knowledge is the Harris Benedict (for men): (13.75 x…

Go for a long walk. See the city. Jog in the morning. Don't worry about 1 day of indulgence. It won't show up. Keep eating what you want. After all, you're on vacation. It will only set you back a week or two when you get home anyway.

On the web just hit the Food tab at the top. It will show you breakdown by common macros. On the app, there's a summary screen that also shows.

You will lose weight faster if you don't eat them back. But listen to your body. If you find yourself feeling sluggish, having a hard time concentrating, experiencing hair loss, irratibility, mood swings, depression, etc then eat them back.

I would recommend adding some additional burn, increasing by 100 calories per week, and not eating that back. So this week, burn 300 calories per day. Next week, burn 400 calories per day. Week after, 500 calories per day. Combination of strength and aerobics should help with it. 500 calories can easily be done in an hour.…

Bottom line up front: Burn as many calories going as hard as you can. Aerobic exercise is when your body combines fat with oxygen to create ATP, the energy your muscles need to contract. Anaerobic exercise is when your body utilizes the glycogen stored in your muscles as fuel. This does not require oxygen. The Aerobic…

I think about 1500 mg is needed to replenish what is lost. Don't worry about the extra weight loss. If it's sodium related it will normalize.
