  • Here's one that's yummy and a little different: Spicy Tortilla Soup with Shrimp and Avocado http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/spicy-tortilla-soup-50400000110406/ Another favorite: Pasta Fagioli (I add Italian chicken or turkey sausage to mine) http://www.skinnytaste.com/2008/12/pasta-fagioli-64-pts.html And I haven't tried…
  • Interestingly, there was a segment on green coffee bean extract on the Dr. Oz show today. I know there are a lot of Oz haters out there, but, for what it's worth, he made a big deal about how he does not endorse any product, and is trying to crack down on everyone using his name to sell their stuff. He also presented the…
  • First, I love my digital scale! It weighs in ounces and grams, and I have learned to rely on it over measuring cups because I never knew whether it should be filled to the brim, stuffed, lightly filled, or what. So much more accurate, and I have found that it allows me more of certain foods than I would have given myself…
  • I've tried it. While I'm generally skeptical of "miracle pills," I did some research on this one, and it didn't seem to be touted as one. Rather, it seemed like a supplement with no adverse side effects that could help incrementally with weight loss. After taking it for a couple of months, I can't really say whether it…
  • Curious to hear your view on studies indicating that exercise actually plays a minimal role in weight loss. For example, this article (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1914974,00.html) was recommended to me as a partial justification for not eating back exercise calories (combined with the issue over…
  • I would buy an HRM and use it only for cardio burns, not day-to-day stuff. Even then, I wouldn't necessarily eat back all of the calories that it says you burned - it's more accurate than MFP, but still only an estimate, so I'd leave a margin of error. Fitbit is useful for keeping tabs on your day-to-day activitiy, but I…
  • I'm 5'4" - Started at a high of 228 lbs in February and currently down to 187. Goal weight is somewhere between 140 and 160 - I'll have a better idea as I get closer, see where my body fat % is, etc. I've been eating right at 1400 calories since starting a local weight loss/metabolic testing program in May, not eating back…
  • I have the Polar FT4 and the Fitbit. Well, more accurately, I HAD a Fitbit, before I accidentally wore it into the pool and killed it - oops. But it ties in nicely to your question, since you mentioned swimming - it's definitely not gonna work for that! :-) Even if it were waterproof, it measures steps, not general…
  • I try to do this as much as I can, but often I have to come on and switch things around a bit as the day goes on, as I end up not being hungry for what I planned, my husband decides he wants to go out to dinner, etc.
  • Yep, my husband used to do this, and still does occasionally. Kind of kills the moment when you have to yell "are you actually awake??" :-)
  • Hmm, I don't seem to have any left over - I'm always in the clean plate club! :-) If I did, I wouldn't deduct it - I'd rather overestimate my calories than underestimate them, and there might be something else in the meal that I ate a bit more of than I thought, so it tends to balance out.
  • I love egg sandwiches on sandwich thins with turkey bacon and cheese. Never tried making them in advance and freezing them, but that sounds like a great idea! I just do one egg in a ramekin in the microwave for 4 10-second bursts (if I try to do the whole 40 seconds, the egg wants to explode).
  • Just send you a request! I've lost almost 40 pounds, and have another 30-50 to go.
  • I used to sleepwalk as a child - my mom tells stories of finding me curled up asleep in my closet and other random places. My husband also used to sleepwalk and talk in his sleep back when we were first dating, but he doesn't do it anymore. And apparently sleep disturbances are hereditary, because our son has night…
  • I wear the HRM for workouts due to improved accuracy - I either take my fitbit off for that time or use the start/stop function to avoid duplication. After initially eating back the "extra" calories that fitbit gave me, I have switched to using it just for generally tracking my level of activity, and I no longer synch it…

  • I'm eating cleaner, but I'm not there 100%, and still have my "cheats." But overall I have switched to much more organic and less processed foods, and am always interested in advice, new recipes, etc.
  • I have a blog focused on my efforts to achieve a healthier lifestyle, but I've frankly gotten lazy about updating it lately. Would love some new readers who post comments and hold me accountable! http://www.roadbesttraveled.com

  • The best way to determine your BMR is to have it actually tested, using a process called indirect calorimetry. Some weight loss centers, fitness centers, and doctors will provide this service for about $75-100. Anything else is just an estimate - it will tell you the average BMR of a male/female of your age, height, and…
  • Weekends are definitely tougher! I deal with it by planning my meals as early in the day as possible, trying to fit in family walks, and allowing myselt to use Saturday as a cheat day if necessary - I know that one day won't undo all the good work I've done during the week, and just try not to go completely overboard.
  • Yep, that's exactly what they told me about exercise. Frustrating! I really hesitated to sign up, but ultimately did it because I wanted the metabolic testing. I'm going to keep trying it for now, at least, but if I start to plateu or gain, I may just start netting out my exercise calories again without telling them...
  • I do workout DVDs at home when my son is at school. When he's home, we go on walks, bike rides, kick a soccer ball around in the back yard. I also use a fitbit to try to make sure I'm moving around a lot during the day instead of just zoning out in front of the computer or TV.
  • Love these, espectially the BBQ flavor. They've been great for the nights I've had to grab a sandwich on the go due to my son's soccer and t-ball games.
  • That's too bad... How long did she do their program? I've had some success so far, but not really that much more than I was achieving on my own, and I'm wondering at what point I might try tweaking the program to try to get better results (i.e., going back to eating back exercising calories, at least some of them). I'm…
  • I'm 43, and have lost about 30 pounds so far, looking to lose another 40-60. Feel free to add me as well!
  • Technically, MFP does not bank calories like WW does. Which isn't to say that a cheat day is going to totally derail your progress. But what I've been told (by an RD) is that your body wakes up each day and all it knows is that it needs a particular number of calories to function - if it gets less than that, it's going to…
  • Sounds like we're in a similar place - I'm 43 years old, and started on MFP in February at my high weight of 228.8. Currently at 199.8, and hoping to get somewhere betwen 140 and 160.
  • I'll second that...
