  • I started in June, finished in August and did a triathlon sprint in September. Just ran an 8K. It is a great program. There is a good c25k forum (http://c25k.cze.dk/) that includes several mfp members.
  • Interesting read and makes sense. Thanks for posting this helpful information!
  • I think one reason our appetites go up when it starts to get cold is because our bodies are trying to prepare us for winter. Squirrels gather nuts, bears prepare to hibernate, we fatten up. There is a difference between being hungry and craving food. Certain foods that I eat make me want to eat more, while others fill me…
  • I thnk the article is true for an intermediate to advanced lifter that wants muscle / strength gains above all else. It doesn't say cardio is bad, just unproductive in this pursuit. I did StrongLifts 5x5 (great program) and quickly went from 95 lb squats with lousy form to 240 lb squats with good form, with similar…
  • First your body is going through some changes and may need some time to sort things out. That instant 10 lb loss may have been water weight and maybe hydration is picking up and real weight is coming off. Typical is big loss week 1, no loss week 2, small loss week 3, bigger losses weeks 4+. Maybe you are a week behind. Or…
  • I get a lot of comments from close family. They really are worried about me. I had a neighbor that worked out obsessively, ignored hip pain, ran in a 10k, came in 2nd in her age group, and wound up with a nasty hip injury / surgery that sidelined her running permanently. She was about my age when it happened. Truth is…
  • Huge weight losses when you first start most any weight loss program are because you have less food moving through your system. Loss of hydration also has as large impact. Low carb definitely works, but it is not magic. Eating low carb helps you be in control of what you eat and you tend to eat less calories, even though…
  • I love your tough love / no excuses message! People can find a way. And amazingly they usually do. Everyone has periods of time where they are a superstar losing their weight. But this is a never ending race, yet people go into it thinking it has an end. Even you - through sheer determination you have found a way to stay…
  • Eating enough is important to keep the body healthy, so not disagreeing with advice to eat more if the deficit is too large and putting the body in a starvation state. This may or may not be the case here. And I want to caution about eating back exercise calories. The number of calories reported by exercise equipment can…
  • A familiar sentiment about going off Atkins, but also applies to going off any weight management plan. Somewhere during your "as soon as" period you managed to eat well over 100,000 extra calories! That's the eqivalent of 375 extra Snickers bars. :) A big part of each of our weight loss plans has to be planning how to…

  • I ageee as well, although for me managing carbs is the real focus. When i do, hunger is under control and the calories take care of themselves.
  • Just be careful, it is not an easy thing to do. Suggest you aim for 100 carbs or so at least to start. Sort of moderate carb. See how you feel. That may even be a good level for life. You can always add more. You may feel ill when you start adding carbs back. And bowel habits may change drastically. Be prepared. Also when…
  • As I get thinner I find I get more symptoms of being hungry than when I had lots of weight to lose. I don't usually get a headache, but a get a dull ache in my lower stomach that says its time to eat. When I start to think about eating something specific, and my brain is telling me to eat it - that is not really hunger -…
  • Not sure our grandparents were that much more active than us. Factor in all of the exercise that today's generation does and I might argue the opposite. Either way, they had the ability to eat foods they enjoyed - and had the means to eat enough of it to get fat. Why didn't they? Or better question, why have more and more…
  • Here is a link to a column from the NY Times that explains and interprets the study: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/01/opinion/sunday/what-really-makes-us-fat.html?_r=0 And here is a link to the raw study abstract, as published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, June 27, 2012, Vol 307, No. 24…
  • A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that the types of food we eat impacts how much energy our bodies use (burn) both at rest and when active. After losing weight on a diet, subjects were put on three different diets - one high in sugary carbs (typical American diet), one high…

  • I also don't want a conflict. But feel the a healthy debate helps everyone see this issue from different perspectives. I appreciate your direct yet respectful demeanor, and will try to "debate" in a respectful manner as well. The abstract you publish is from 2003. And it references no studies. It uses some scarey rhetoric…

  • Carbs make you hungry. And hungry makes you overeat. And overeating makes you fat. Proteins and fats fill you up. And filled up people don't eat any more. And that makes you lose weight. I don't agree with your second sentence. Eating extra calories adds more than water weight! The idea that "greasy" foods are unhealthy…

  • Atkins recommended a 2 week induction phase where carbs are cut to 20 per day, but after that carb intake was increased. As weight started to return to normal, more and more carbs are added to the person's diet. I don't do Atkins exactly, but this is what he advocated.

  • I have lost 46 lbs with an Atkins-like low carb way of eating. It really works well for me. By eliminating the high sugar/high starch foods like regular bread, while potato, rice, cereals, pasta, sugary desserts, and the like, I am in control of what I eat and eat foods I love. Since starting I have been exercising, and…

  • I'll chime in on the low carb side. (Previous low carber said no carb which I hope was a typo.)The human body was never intended to eat so much highly refined food. Amazing fact is that breakfast cereals convert to sugar in the bloodstream faster than eating pure table sugar. People that say "no sugar" but are eating…
  • Recommend looking at the C25k program. Slow progression from running 1 minute intervals to running 30 minutes (about 5k depending on your speed). Also make sure you are landing on your midfoot and not your heel. Landing on your heel out in front of your body sends jolts of reverse force back up your leg and causes all…
  • You should never have a slip up day. Make every eating opportunity something you are in control of. If you decide to let yourself eat a pizza and ice cream, tell yourself that it is okay to eat it, but set some limits on what you will eat. It is okay to be generous, but whatever amount you agree with yourself ahead of time…
  • Ask yourslef "why am I obese?" Were your grandparents and great grandparents obese? Shouldn't your body be able to regulate itself and maintain a healthy weight? If you think you're obese because you are lazy and weak, you are putting yourself down for no reason. It is not your fault. Our grandparents ate meat, they ate…
  • My triathlon was a sprint. Although thinking now about an Olympic.
  • Hey dark - Not sure what your plan is, but I would suggest you consider doing a low carb diet. Not crazy low carb, but eliminating bread, rice, pasta, white potato and dessert. You can eat meat, cheese, eggs, non-starchy veggies, fruit (in moderation), nuts (in moderation), and low carb wraps. This way of eating really…

  • Yes - the app is time based. So it will say "Begin your warmup now", and "Start running now", and "1 minute left", etc.
  • Mine was a triathlon sprint, but here were my lessons learned. Try to go to the bathroom close to the start of the race. I went 1/2 hour before and then had to go again before the start. Combination of over hydration, nerves and being chilly outside You should not need anything to eat on the way (unless you have been…
