  • Well, remember Derby practice will help you with those loss goals! Be sure you do your squats, and work that endurance. Also, ask the gals on the team/league. Reach out to Shelby Bruisin'. She is on the Old Money Honeys, was on the B's and I think even the Riveters for a while. She can tell you that being bigger is not a…
  • Sianarella is right. Most leagues will teach you how to skate. Go to the offered clinics, and just keep practicing. Some of the stars on my team started off not skating well at all. So, they wore their skates all the time (around the house, at work, anywhere any time). As for the social anxiety: I can tell you, as someone…
  • I want to echo what rhichi said: Try something new, keep trying new things, and never give up.. even when you get super discouraged. I didn't start working out "hard" until this year. I was coating along and saying "training for ___ is enough" when in fact it was not. Now, I am watching what I eat more, and doing little…
  • I do 15-20 pushups every day. 25 "Standard" Sit Ups, and 10 (leg in air) crunches. I also do Kettlebell 2+ times a week when my practice schedule is light. In the next few days, I hope to start Crossfit. (NH Roller Derby just got picked in the ECDX Lottery, and I gotta step it up!)
  • I actually enjoy a cigar now and then. Mr mjbrenner and I have, with other friends, developed an "almost tradition" every October where we celebrate the end of another successful summer. :-) I also met some of my better friends because they were having cigars; I walked by, made a comment, and next we knew... friends were…
  • If this is how it has "always been", there could be something beyond simple dieting and exercise. Have your Dr check your Thyroid. You may have an under-active condition (hyopthyroid). It never hurts to check anyway, and can be part of your routine check up/annual exam. Also, ditch the diets! All those programs (WW,…
  • Thanks for the tips all! I am going to figure this out, and then one day there will be listed: "Roller Derby Endurance Drill" and "Roller Derby Skills Drills (name)" with a better calorie count!
  • Hey All I'm Irate Pirate from NH Roller Derby. My league will be 5 years old this season! How exciting. It is also our second year as a full WFTDA League. I will have personally been with NHRD for 4 years next month. I currently skate for the All Star team. I am working extra hard this year on training. I need to ramp it…
  • Another Roller Derby skater here (NH Roller Derby). I love my quads. I was wondering, during a standard endurance drill (about 30 minutes a drill, top speed sprints with skills) what do you suppose the caloric burn really is? What about skills drill? During a bout? Jam to jam? I have been altering the skating listings…
