You could go the new route and just use your real name. Or... (going from your username here): Spunky Monkey (play off of Funky Monkey)

I have the same issue. I sometimes just have a piece of low fat cheese (if I have them, I eat a wheel of the baby bell originals). If you cannot have dairy, anything (for me anyway) 100 calories or less is enough to quell the hunger pangs to I can go to bed. I have found that if I have something like a peanut butter…

Here is what I generally do and what my teammates sometimes do: High protein dinner one hour before practice. Sometimes just a peanut butter on whole wheat sandwich works. Almonds. Bring almonds with you and pop a few in your mouth just before when you think you will start feeling sluggish. One of the jammers on my B-Team…

Hey Folks I found a great resource for cross training, Rehab training after injury, and all around awesome info for Derby Athletics! Check it out!! http://www.rollerderbyathletics.com/ I started doing the "7 Minutes In Heaven" workout almost 3 weeks ago, and I am already seeing an improvement in my footwork. :-)

My League-Mates and I have all started hitting the gym for weight lifting and running on nights we do not have practice. For me personally, I have started doing interval training/running. You can do anything for 2 minutes, right? (Really, I hate running... but, it's not so horrible on a treadmill). I have also, for core,…

Here is something to try (for anyone to try) that I just started on. http://www.twohundredsitups.com/index.html Like the 100 Push Up Challenge, this is a ramp up program to help strengthen your core. Core strength is pretty important in the Derbs. A strong stance comes from a strong core. Don't let the title fool you,…

So, we altered the 25 in 5. Five minutes sprinting with random whistle blasts (no less than 10). *On the whistle blast you fall into a 4 point 'fall' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbmN-fokN9g Except we go all the way down onto the stomach for a tougher workout). *Get up as fast as you can and sprint! This is grueling and…

You're gonna get it! Sometimes after crazy leg work I find my general endurance is down. Part of that is because of muscle fatigue. Listen to your body during these workouts... also, Bananas. Potassium is your friend for recovery! Remember to skate the diamond (edging the inside track boundary/apex on the turns and going…

If you have any "Rail Trails" in your area, they are amazing to skate down. (We have them in NH, old Railroad paths paved and turned into multi-state awesome.) I personally use the Rail Trails for Endurance and form. Any parks that have a permanent slab for ice skating in the winter are also great. Check with your parks…

Thinking about it. I might just get a day pass. Depends on if the Hubby wants to do our "usual" or if he minds me changing things up.

One of the gals on my league struggled with this too. What she did was she would do "knee falls" at home. No skates or anything, but down to one knee and back up. She would do 15-20 a day on each leg. She rocks them now.

With the advice above, also consider that many skaters are using their real names these days. You do not *have* to choose anything else.

We are technically in our off season right now, but are still doing some practices. 2 nights for Fresh Meat training. 1-2 Nights for the All star Team, alternating every other week with the B team combined. And an "Open House" night for anyone (no structure). Our regular season consists of 1-2 nights (sometimes Sunday…

NHRD is proud to continually support Girls Incorporated of NH (Dedicated to helping young girls become empowered, smart, and independent women), the American Red Cross (we've raised around 200 pints of blood in the last 2 years), NH Food Banks (we offer a discount at the door if folks bring a non-perishable), and lastly we…

I'm only a little worried about dirty play. Most vetted skaters already have it built into them to keep their arms down (elbows/forearms), to not rush behind someone aka speed check (minor back blocking), etc. So I am not horribly worried. I also believe that vetted skaters who are now training will be likely to still…

That's amazing! And, funny... I watched this a few hours ago, before logging into MFP!

Wow! Congrats! I know our league had a couple of folks need to retake twice, so this is a huge deal! Awesome for you!!!

Wow, and here I thought I was the only one to do something so silly. Same thing, the night before my 1st practice with New Hampshire. You are not alone!!!! You're not skating right now? Booo... I hope you get back out there soon!

I feel you, I hear you. Earlier this season I was drafted onto the A-team here. It was grueling, and I love it... at first. Eventually, it became me beating myself up and not feeling like I was living up to the potential. Then came getting rostered, but not being played. At the time I beat myself up more days than I…

Size isn't really a factor, in my opinion. Sure, you look at folks like Bonnie Thunders and Claire D-Way and think "I am way too big" but it is so not true. I weigh in right now at about 185 (started MFP at 215). I have been skating for about 5 years now (Freshie class of 2008 for NHRD) and at my heaviest (220) I was still…

We just started a new endurance drill. *30/60/90* Split into 2 lines or 2 packs. At the whistle, pack/line 1 sprints for 30 seconds while the others skate the outside of the track. At the next whistle, switch. At the next it is a 60 second sprint And then a 90 second. Back down... 90, 60, 30, done. It's good because it…

I had tried several different things in the office (working from home now, it's easier). I have ankle weights (the adjustable kind), I would sometimes wear them around the office. I'd take longer than usual/meandering ways to get places (instead of a b-line to the break room, I would circle the whole floor to get there).…

This is something similar one of my coaches taught me recently when we were doing what I have dubbed "Pace Line Hell". I just copied the skater doing the best crossovers the whole way in front of me. If I was the front skater, I did not change my pace. Worked out well. I also maintain my headphones give me super powers…

So, here is a silly question (because I am debating an HRM purchase). Do you use one with a chest strap? I cannot imagine that you use a wrist watch version... as your wrist guards may (should) get in the way.

I used to work at Renaissance Faires. Some friends wrote a show called "Capn' Bynkie, featuring the Irate Pirates" and I loved it. I wish it had become a popular skit for the road. Anyway, I have loved pirates since I was super little. And I will always love them. So, I became the Irate Pirate, :-)

Curious to know how it went for you. I admit, I did not really "read" through all the comments, but I skimmed. Something that helped me during Fresh Met training was isolating each movement. Essentially you keep your inside leg "planted" and bent at the knee and for 10 laps you push out with your outside leg. You want to…

We get a copy of "what we are doing" so we minimize in between time for drill explanation. I still subtract (on average) 20-40 minutes from each practice. So for a two hour practice, I will put that I skated 1.5 hours, or 1.25 hours. If I know there is an endurance drill (which we always have one) I count that separate as…
-
This is why I wear my headphones when we do this, or the person who is counting for me (because I always lose count) only tells me when time is up. Skate the Diamond (inner/apex edge, outer edge, inner/apex edge, outer edge). Also, if you find you are right behind someone, I find if we are going the same speed I will…

I love Bruised Boutique... and not just because I am 10 minutes away. I have also worked with Sin City (http://www.sincityskates.com/). The ladies who run this shop really know their gear and are very helpful. If you can, be sure you try skates on (maybe a friend has some ion the right size if there are no shops near you)…

Right now 175 would make me happy with myself. I was happiest at 160, so that is an "ultimate" goal.
