  • Welcome. It is a great web site. I got back into cycling about 5 years ago, and lost 30 pounds. Had been there ever since. This year, I decided to cycle a lot and lose weight. I ended up losing nothing until I joined this web page and counted calories. I joined 8 weeks ago, and have lost 16 pounds. Found out I was doing…
  • Yes, my weight was lower as well. As soon as I updated goals, and went through the couple of web pages, I am now allowed 20 less calories a day. It puts your weight in the formula, but doesn't run it until you do. give it a try.
  • My wife was asked to go to goals to update. I never wait that long. Seeing this post, I went to goals and updated. Now, I am eating a few less calories a day. Even with a couple pounds lost, it changes a little.
  • Ricky, I did this at the start--eating less than supposed to and 2 pound a week goal. After a couple weeks, the weight seemed to stop. So, I changed my calories to losing 1 1/2 pound a week. That only changes the total of calories by 250. Now, when I am 200 calories under, I am actually at a 2 pound rate. I have been on…
  • Technically, we are both wrong. It is calories burned if you were in bed all day. And, it does change when you lose weight. Mine was 1950 when I started here. It is now 1884 and will end at about 1775. And, I do not think it is counterproductive to treat yourself when you exercise. Yesterday, I spent 90 minutes on my…
  • My wife and I were vegetarian during grad school, more from saving money than taste, etc. That was 25 years ago. We found a lot of wisdom in Moosewood Cookbooks. Some of our best recipes still come from there.
  • No, don't feel bad about the cake. Think about what you want out of your exercise and calories. Once a week, I exercise for the cake. It is the treat after a really long workout. I just don't make it a habit. When I do, I don't lose weight. The idea is not to feel bad about what you eat, it is to change your eating to eat…
  • When it first came out, I weighed 255 and went on it. Got down to 205 fairly easily. My wife was on it with me, but she didn't lose any weight. After coming off it, I gained 10 back in about 4 months. Kept it off until about a year ago when it went back to 220. So, for me it worked. I never got close to 255 again. Just…
  • Back in the day, I shattered the inside of my knee playing flag football. Tore everything, and still need to wear a brace when doing things I shouldn't: skiing. I don't play things like basketball, tennis, and haven't for the past 25 years. All this led to the overweight issue. Crazy thing is, with the weight coming off,…
  • My wife and I weigh in on Fridays and Mondays. Fridays tell us how the week has gone. Mondays keep us honest on the weekends.
  • When I have lost more than 2 pounds a week, it was muscle. And I am 6'0", 215. If I lose more than 2 pounds, I cannot lift as much on the weights, so I know it is muscle. Even with 2 pounds a week for the past 7 weeks, I have lost some muscle. I am lifting what I lifted about 12 weeks ago. Had to take some weights off…
  • elizw5-- Heart rate monitors monitor your heart  Actually, they are very helpful while exercising to keep your heart in your aerobic rate to burn the most calories. I will look for an article on how to figure yours out. Basically, you find your top heart rate (on a chart) based on age and sex. Then, when you…
  • Yet, you have to eat. So, I would make your big meal in the day and have something light just before bed if that works. On nights I get dinner late, I have yoghurt and berries. Not a lot of calories, but something that tells me I am full enough to sleep.
  • Stopped at Costco to see low calorie fruit crisps. Cost $14 for 7oz. That means they are over $30 a pound. And, one serving is 1/10 of that, so .7 oz. Am I missing something here? That means the packaging weighs more than the fruit, and you are eating about 1/2 a dried apple. It is a lot cheaper to buy in bulk or something…
  • Two calories that are worth it. With three cups a day, that makes 6 calories a day, 42 a week, 210 a month, 2,190 a year. Less than a calorie gained in a year off coffee. It is not what is to blame. Now, if I could have got the donut I had with it to have only 2 calories. I gave up the donut, not the coffee. In fact,…
  • Good to see pictures. Keep riding your bike. I'll post my pics when I get 44 pounds lost.
  • Also ask at your bulk food store. Ours carries two: steel cut and old fashioned. But it doesn't say it on the bins. Ask to see the 25# bag. Might be cheaper. Also, Bob's Red Mill is carried in stores, and is available on line, just as a price comparison.
  • Most Oatmeal is not gluten free because it is processed in the same plant as wheat, so there are traces of gluten. But, oatmeal itself is gluten free. So, you need to check the label. I know Bob's Red Mill has a gluten free oatmeal. And, a local family business makes gluten free oatmeal. From a friend who has a gluten…
  • Pretty much, you can eat whatever you want. Some will tell you that you need to eat everything healthy--no white bread, no ice cream, etc. But, my weekly goal is losing 1 1/2 pounds. So, at 6' I can eat 1810 calories. I stay healthy: oatmeal, eggs, yoghurt, fish, veggies, fruit. When I exercise, I have a small treat: 1/2…
  • imapmyride is the one I have used for cycling. they have other ones for running.
  • I don't drink as much as they suggest, but more than I did before reading up on it. In my understanding, water serves two purposes. First, it keeps you hydrated. This keeps your muscles happy and your organs working like they should. In that, I notice that if I do not drink enough water when dieting, I actually need…
  • You are in my prayers as you face your surgery. Glad to hear a different use for this website. I also realized that I was eating way too much protein. I hope you are getting the right intake before your surgery.
  • To change your calories to 500, not suggested by any health experts, go to "My Home." Once there click on "Goals." When given the option, select "change goals." Select "Custom" and conitnue. Enter 500 in the first box and click "change goals" at bottom. Again, crash diets are not good for you. They slow down your…
  • I drink Costco's Diet Green Tea. It contains aspartane as it's sweetener so it has zero calories. Even the kids are drinking it over sodas.
  • Dried fruit does not equal low sugar. My wife dries apples every year. She cuts one apple into about 10 slices. Then dries them. They fit in your hand. When I wasn't watching my weight, I would eat a handful. Now that I watch my weight, I grabbed a handful, and had 2-3 apples worth. That means I have the sugar of 3 apples.…
  • Mine is Mountain High Yoghurt and blueberries. Have about 15 gallon bags of blueberries in the freezer.
  • They don't give it to you, at least I haven't found it. But, if you go to home and adjust your goals, you can find the answers. Simply have your current weight and have your goal be maintaining. That gives you your high. Second, change your weight to your goal weight, then have it maintain, that will give you that DCN.…
  • I have a variety of "oatmeals" that I have. All taste a bit different to fit the mode. 7 grain (also 10 grain): similar to steel cut oats but other flavors. Steel cut oats. Taught to eat with a bit of milk on the side. Then oats stay hot. Milk gives it a good texture. Old Fashioned Rolled Oats. Bob's Red Mill 5 Grain…
  • Keep the old scale around. I had the same thing. I use the digital scale on a regular basis. Once in a while, I step on the old scale in the kid's bathroom. i used it 7 years ago when I lost the first 40 pounds. Only put 20 back on. Now trying to take off another 40 to get a total of 60 off. I use the digital scale and it…
  • Check portion sizes on what you do eat. Know what a cup looks like. Also, make comments that you want healthier options and more on the salad bar. My daughter and her friends complained last year using proper channels. When she started back this fall, the salad bar is a lot bigger with healthy options, including lunchmeat…
