  • I just drink it but sometimes add it to oatmeal or yogurt w/fruit. It would work in oatmeal cookies and granola that you bake/make yourself but I'm too lazy to do that.
  • Yeah, I get that but on a functional basis, there really is no better piece of exercise equipment at home or in the gym. A Rogue Echo or similiar "assault" type bike doesn't even come close but it's good for a change of pace now and then.
  • I row 10km/day 5 days/wk on my C2. A rate of about 2.5M meters/yr. I passed 7.5M meters a few months ago and expect to reach 10M meters by early next year. I have a full Olympic wt lighting gym in my garage but haven't been doing any lifting for over a yr, partially due to laziness and partially due to a bad (and…
  • If u are backpacking, wt is the MOST important factor. Quality of materials isrelated to wt and not an issue w/mwjor backoack gear makers Beyond that: 1) Ease of set up of both tent and fly. 2,) Ease of enty/exit especially in a 2+ person tent if more than 1 person actually uses the tent 3,) Floor panel seams that are NOT…
  • I seriously doubt that you haven't lost fat/weight because you haven't done any lifting. Losing fat/weight is primarily about limiting how much you eat and, if you reduce your food/cal intake sufficiently your body will use up any available fat "reserves." Aerobic exercise will help to burn a few more cals but really do…
  • #3 - Yes. The rest, no. I have the good fortune to have all of the space and gear that I need to work out at home (or in the outdoors, hiking or walking) entirely ALONE which is my preference.

  • Rowing has been my exercise of choice for the past 5-6 years. Currently rowing 10K meters/day; 5 days/wk. I also "hate" running and consider riding a bike on the road dangerous; much more so than motorcycling the I did for many years because on a bicycle you are at the mercy of every driver who passes you on the road. I've…

  • I was found to be VitD deficient about 10 yrs ago. After varying the dosage a couple of yrs to find the "right" amount for me, I have since seen taking one 10k IU gel tab of VitD every other day for an ave of 5k IU per day, which puts my VitD level at the "normal" level based on annual blood testing. However, everyone is…
  • 1lb of SHELLED mussels would be more mussels than most ppl v could eat in 1 sitting. 1 lb in the shell, no problrm and my guess is that the "meat" in thise shells eouldn't weigh more than 4-6 oz.
  • I use 2 separate bars and areas in my garage for squats and deadlifts, which eliminates the need to load/unload a single bar for both lifts. The safety squat bar always in the squat rack and the other bar stays in a 9-bar bar holder until I need to use it and move the car out of the way to open up my deadlift space on top…
  • Could be a lot of reasons for the pain. Form should be easy to fix, if that's the issue. Orthopedic problems can only be assessed by a qualified physician. Have you ever tried neoprene braces (reinforced and non-reinforced) or elastic wraps? If not, you might want to try them to see if they help or not.
  • Since there's really no way to accurately measure "lean body mass" from day to day, I'd just rely on your actual body weight and go with 0.8-1 gm of protein per # of that. At least, that was what I use to do what I was trying to build muscle mass by lifting heavy and eating a lot of protein.
  • Normally, all that I have for "breakfast" is a couple of large cups of black coffee but, on weekends, I will occasionally make myself 3 scrambled eggs w/green onions mixed in, a lb of bacon (about 1/4-1/2 of which I will eat on the spot) and an English muffin w/butter and orange marmalade with sparkling wine. :)
  • I am blind as a bat w/o glasses. Soft contacts are what I wear during the day for all activities. I only wear glasses at home at night when I take the soft contacts out. Lasik surgery is also an option. I looked into that as well but for a variety of reasons decided that it was not right for me, since soft contacts worked…
  • There was a time when I started lifting that I tried to see what my 1RM max "equivalent" was which was based on 3-5RMs wc was w/in the top 5% for men my age/wt based on charts and certain public databases. However, after sustaining a back injury doing squats improperly (and not even while attempting to lift a heavy wt for…
  • I use to be able to do 20-25 "full pullups" but elbow deterioration has reduced that to zero. I can still do them but, if I do, it will cause severe pain in my right elbow. So, I don't do them anymore. I believe that overhead presses, Arnold dumb bell presses, overhead dumbbell presses, lying dumb bell pullovers, push ups…
  • I've had many hydro and DEXA tests done at the same time over a 5 yr period, as often as quarterly, in the past. I did both hydro and DEXA initially because I wanted to compare the results for comparative validity. What I found was that the hydro and DEXA results varied similarly (up/down) but that the hydro results were…
  • The Navy calculator always reads high for me. Might be a racial bias because I'm not white. I have many DEXA and hydro readings as a basis of comparison
  • Haven't eaten any "fast food" or had can of a soda for over 5 yrs but I still eat pizza and drink beer. It's just a matter of eating/drinking in moderation and using MFP to count cals and stay on target.
  • My BMI currently varies betwen 23.6-24.3 based on a ht of 5'8" and a wt range between 155-160#. It's within the "normal" BMI range and works fine for me. Everyone is certainly different but I doubt that you (the OP) would have any problem maintaining your BMI between 23-24, if you are happy w/your wt/shape in that range
  • Are you asking as a guy? If so, I've done it for quite some time -- managed to do the lot as a 70 yr old man. BF has been as low as 8% but mostly 12-13% as measured by DEXA and hydro. I have well defined & vascular arms, well defined but not vascular legs, a shadow of a 6 pack (never could get it well defined; genetics)…
  • Most (bit not all) MFP entries have alternate measurement units available bevit ozs vs gms or cups vs tbsps. Just click on the displayed unit of measurement to see if there are any alternates. If so, just pick the unit of measurement that best suits your needs. If not, puck another entry that does.
  • ALL treadmills are dangerous to use to the careless and unwary but it seems that the Peloton treadmill is particularly so.
  • I tried for over a YEAR to "recomp" by lifting HEAVY 3x's a week and eating a very HIGH PROTEIN diet (up to 200g/#/day (from regular food and supplements) and by measuring my BF/muscle mass every quarter w/DEXA. The results were VERY disappointing and I gave it up. Long story short, I gained most of the muscle mass that I…
  • I really don't understand why anyone would exercise will ill or injured but many people do.
  • One of many, many threads asking the SAME question over the years but I'll answer it just the same. Everyone does what they are comfortable with. There is no "right" answer. I weigh myself DAILY and have been doing so for over 5 years. Doesn't bother me but there are many who can not handle the daily data feedback and…
  • Just find a "best guess" listing from the MFP database and (my suggestion is to) choose a listing on the HIGH end (rather than low end) in order to over-estimate cals consumed in case you're wrong. At least that's what I do and it "works" for me. IMO, it's better to be "wrong" on the high side and eat less and trying to…
  • Calipers are hard to use accurately and, as @cwolfman points out, are best used by someone with training/experience using them. The more points of measurement the better and, for the greatest accuracy, you cannot possibly do them all by yourself. Tape measure/BF calculators are just ball park estimators and cannot possibly…
  • It is almost always true that you "get what you pay for" and any rower that you can buy for $200-600 will either be poorly constructed (and won't last long) or will be really old and in bad shape (like a "vintage" Concept 2 rower than can sometimes be found in that price range). There is also no doubt in my mind that the…
