Thanks, guys! :-) And Joan, I couldn't imagine running 6, let alone 13, miles 6 months ago. You'll reach your goal, whatever it is, bit by bit. Slow and steady wins the race!

Awesome! Congrats on your success! I am about 1/2 thru CLX and am looking forward to the final results. Posts like yours inspire the rest of us!

Awesome! I hope to join you eventually, as. I have quite a few of nice work pants that don't quite fit yet. Keep up the great work!

Meow! You go!

Congratulations on tackling your first half! I just did my first half this past Sunday, and it was lots of fun. All the above advice is terrific, and the only thing I'd add is to get a good night's sleep and lay out all your gear the night before. Don't do what I did: I tried just thinking of it as an extended long run but…

I'm currently 1/2 way through Chalean Extreme (CLX) and am enjoying it very much. Ironically, I'm going to be doing Insanity afterwards--well, it's probably more accurate to say that I'll be integrating Insanity into my routine, as I run and also enjoy strength training. But in any case, I think it depends on your goals.…

Holy mackerel! Congratulations!

DH and I do one plank every night. Last night we got up to 2:17. Of course, we've only been doing this for a few days, so we'll see how long it lasts. :-)
-
Last night I made it over 2 minutes in plank position. And it's not from ab/core work: it's all from the fact that I started using weights (dumbbells) back in February. I didn't even start trying to do a plank until a few days ago and have been pleasantly surprised, as the last time I tried to do a plank was several years…

Congratulations! Keep up the great work.

Holy cow, that's AWESOME. It's on my bucket list but I've got a way to go. :-) /bows
-
Congratulations on your victories! Not only the weight that you have lost, but on being able to accomplish the running that your doctor initially said you couldn't. That's what I call a win for both body and soul!

Woo hoo! Awesome possum!

At my gym, they have these machines that resemble bikes, except that you sit and peddle with your arms. Also, I just Googled "chair cardio" and it seems like there's stuff on YouTube about this (sorry, I'm at work and can't check out the videos right now). Good luck! Plantar fasciitis is no joke.

Congratulations! Awesome story.

Come on down! There's plenty for everyone. :-)

For me, that would almost be a rhetorical question. You see, we live in North Carolina, and being military, we're not true Southerners, but man oh man, we do love their food. Every few months we'll go to an old fashioned Southern buffet after church. The kind of place where everyone in town goes there after church and…

Sweet!!

Regarding the cost of P90X, Insanity, etc.: They are expensive, but you can usually always find a used copy somewhere for lots cheaper. I got my Chalean Extreme used on Amazon and Insanity used off of Craigslist super cheap. Good luck!
-
Some good options: If you don't mind used: Play it Again Sports, Craigslist, Goodwill for dumbbells and/or a barbell If you prefer new: Wal-Mart for same I apologize for not stating just ONE purchase as requested. I've been very happy just using dumbbells, but obviously lots of people use barbells too. And both used…

This is a great thread. Thank you to the OP for starting it. Your timing was actually quite excellent, as the whole "heavy lifting" thing has been on my mind recently. Let me explain. I'm a runner who is doing my first half-marathon in a couple weeks. The running side of things is sunshine and daisies. But I figured I…

No problem! I've become a huge fan of lifting heavy objects and putting them down again, and I find Staci very inspirational. Although I'm only a beginner, I'm excited at the possibilities.
-
Someone else said this and I second it, loudly: show her the article about Staci on the Nerd Fitness website.
-
Er, pull-ups and chinups are great, but if you're a total beginner, it's probably gonna take you loads of training to accomplish even one pull-up. BUT, you can start on that road by strengthening your upper body with the great suggestions already made on this thread. Also, check out Nerd Fitness; there are many bodyweight…

I'm not crazy about cardio where you don't go anywhere, e.g. treadmill, elliptical, DVDs. However, sometimes they are a necessity due to weather or time constraints, so I just make the best of it. I love to run outside because I like the scenery--counting squirrels, looking at dogs (as long as they don't chase), looking at…

You're a much better grad student than I was. Getting my master's degree was a 2-year blur of takeout, beer, and general unhealthiness. Good luck on your dissertation!

I nominate the guy who invented "In Place of a Road Map" for permanent valedictorian. (sorry, I'm too lazy to do the requisite search just now)

Yeah, I was also wondering about the band geeks. As a proud former band geek, I'm trying to figure out where we would go in the annals of MFP Valley High.

You ran, and to my thinking, that means: you're a runner! Congratulations!
