  • I disagree about that. FWIW, I didn't intend to cause offense with that statement. I intended only to say that it's an activity that is often touted to be ideal, and I dont believe it is. I honestly don't see a counter to this in this thread. I will read through again later, as I am sincerely interested in learning more.…
  • I haven't seen anyone describe how I could improve on the intensity and duration I'm currently getting by learning to run. Can you point me to that? And I'm not being facetious here. I really am interested in finding the best, most efficient workout that I can realistically do. If doing C25K really would be beneficial, I…
  • I haven't been sufficiently convinced that this is true. I am working at 75% to 90% of my HR over 30-45 minutes. That seems optimal to me. What would running intervals (and eventually steady state running, as I understand that's the goal of C25K programs) do to improve that? I think we essentially agree on the answer to…
  • This wasn't directed at me, but I'm a glutton for punishment...I'll jump in. I too think of running as being overrated. I think this because so many tout it as the holy grail of cardio, and ignore/discount/poopooh the value of other cardio excercises. In my case, it is definitely not the only way to get my HR up…
  • Nice job! :flowerforyou:
  • This. I'm not an elliptical user, but I am offended by the tone of the OP. It's condescending and judgemental. It implies that anyone who uses an elliptical is unfit, elderly or just plain lazy. And also, indirectly, that you are working harder than those people because you are working on the stairmill. You find the…
  • Another vote for the FT4 here. I love mine.
  • I love my FT4 too. The biggest difference between the two, as far as I can see, is that the FT7 is compatible with their data transfer software, which lets you upload your data to their polarpersonaltrainer.com website where you can view it and presumably get recommendations etc. There is a good comparison tool on the…
  • Do you have an iphone? If so, check out lolo Beatburn. It sets up progressively challenging interval workouts for you and syncs up your music to your workout. You can choose walk, walk/jog or run, and also beginner, intermediate or advanced levels. It mixes up speed and incline and really gets you working hard. I do the…
  • Clearly I have an emotional attachment to this issue, because this got me choked up. Now I have to go back and rethink all this with that knowledge in mind. Why do we humans have to be so complex? Also...MoreBean13, you pointed out a mistake on my part. I misspoke when I said I was working at the top of my anaerobic range.…
  • I sometimes feel like when you say that you walk for exercise, people think you're out there meandering around; that it's not a real workout. I walk at speeds that some folks jog at. I have gotten up to 4.8 MPH on the treadmill and routinely walk at 4.6 or 4.7 MPH. It's a tough workout. A different kind of tough than…
  • Thanks to all for your perspectives. :flowerforyou: osualex...I don't like the impact on my joints, and the fact that it leaves me sucking air. It totally takes me back to the time when I was an unfit kid made to run laps in the school gym. That's what made me afraid of exercise in the first place. I know some of this…
  • You're right - the difference between treadmill and outdoors is huge. I totally see that. Even walking outside is more difficult than on the treadmill. And to be fair, I have never run on the treadmill. I am a clumsy oaf and too terrified to try it. I understand that my treadmill workout isn't preparing me in any real way…
  • Check out the lolo apps, particularly Beatburn. It's a fantastic app that sets up progressively more challenging walk, walk/jog and running interval workouts for you and syncs up your music to your workout. It is awesome. Without that app, I don't think I'd have made any progress with my cardio. In fact, I probably would…
  • Hells yes! I don't run. I hate it. It makes me feel like a hyperventilating elephant. But I can walk at speeds that some folks jog at (4.8 MPH). And I burn plenty of calories doing so. During a 45 walking interval workout on the treadmill, I can burn over 500 calories. I would never be able to run long enough to get that…
  • I'm a big fan of the Krema brand vanilla flavour. Not sure if it might be a Canadian or even regional brand, though. I also really like the Oikos brand. I prefer the full fat to the reduced or fat free. Both brands are available in 100 g servings which is crucial for me...I could eat a whole 750 ml tub if not careful!
  • My fave is a salad with spinach, sweet peppers, cucumber, chick peas, broccoli, cauliflower (whatever is available to you at home or at the salad bar) with a can of flavoured tuna on top. No need for dressing! I especially like the Clover Leaf Lemon and Dill, and Lemon and Pepper flavours.
  • At home and work I drink out of a 1L bottle. When it's empty I log 4 cups, fill and repeat. :-) I only log water. To me, tea and coffee cancel themselves out a bit because of the diuretic effect of the caffeine. Probably not enough to nullify the benefit of the water in them, but that's how I think of it. It's really just…
  • Love this. If my 2.5 year old daughter sees me in a tank top she says, "Are you exercising, Mommy?" Her twin brother lays down in the bathtub, pretends he's swimming, and says, "I'm exercising like Mommy!". I love that they are seeing this in me and feeling good about it.
  • I know this is kind of the opposite of what you're looking for, but check out this app: http://www.lolofit.com/apps/tempo_magic It takes the music you already have in your playlist and allows you to tweak the tempo. You can even tell it the tempo you want to stay at and it will play all your songs at that tempo. The app I…

  • Not so much for distance tracking, but for varied progressive interval workouts, lolo BeatBurn is fantastic. Syncs your music to your pace and gives stats at the end of the run. No GPS, so it's only tracking by what it's telling you to do...not what you actually do. But as long as you keep up to the workout it's pretty…
  • Hi all. I have 2.5 year old twins, and I struggle with the same things. Mostly time. The only time I can work out (unless I want to stop sleeping, that is) is after my kids are in bed for the night. We are fortunate enough to have a treadmill, so I use it for cardio. I have an awesome app for my iPhone called BeatBurn,…
