It seems to be a cultural thing. Many years ago when I lived in Kansas, that was never done. They would probably have looked at you funny or ask you what you just stepped in. Once I moved to Minnesota, I was embarrassed as I realized I was acting like a clod; everyone took off their shoes upon entering someone's home.
