Not at the office, but at the kid's athletic fields - parents (who otherwise seem diligent, loving, and intelligent) insisting that their 4yr to 7yr old child NEEDS a large (32oz) Gatorade during practice instead of plain water or they'll lose all their sodium and potassium. Note - this is a half hour practice in 60 to 70…

This is why I can't think "diet" - and I really can't think too much about "calories". And I definitely have to ditch thinking about "exercise". What I do have to do is think about how much I want to make my bucket list happen and focus on what I have to do to achieve those goals. Do I need to lose 100+lbs and keep it off…

What about subbing in hot chocolate made with skim milk in place of the coffee or tea. It's excellent for dunking toast in - esp. with peanut butter!! I simply cannot function w/o my hot chocolate (not a coffee/tea drinker).

What do you like best to listen to? Ex. I like country music so my playlist includes things like Cotton-Eyed Joe, Dirt Road Anthem and Blown Away. I also happen to like 80's rock, so I have a mix of Bon Jovi, Madonna, etc. in there as well. My suggestion - throw a bunch of your favorites on there, then delete the ones that…

Would like to second this :) Easy to get caught up in the training and forget to check the shoes for wear and tear. For me, leg pain while doing the same work often is a signal new shoes are in order.

For calories I like to use this site: http://www.shapesense.com/fitness-exercise/calculators/walking-calorie-burn-calculator.aspx and put in my numbers. Then I pick any of the walking choices on MFP's cardio section and adjust the calories to meet what the calculator came up with.

I'll second the Body Glide. Also maybe play around with a couple different styles of sports bras and see if one works better than another for you.

Yes, there are other people out there like that. I know a few. It's hard because not just older generations - but often current society as well - that insist junk food is a "treat". It's considered a nice thing to bake someone a cupcake or a batch of cookies when they're feeling bad ... or invite them over to celebrate…

I often think a great deal of family strife could be eliminated if each member had their own pantry and fridge. :) I have a teenage boy at home so no food is ever safe (healthy or otherwise). His level of body fat is so low you could use him as an anatomical model (use to be able to literally see every one of his rib bones…

Thanks. Who knows maybe someday I'll learn tech stuff and create an app for that *grin* Today was really nice though. I was fortunate to be able to work out during my kid's practice so basically doing loops around the field - this meant I got to go past my vehicle so I left my jacket there, did my workout, then picked it…

Problem is no heart monitor. I know I don't hit that walking ... calves cramp up when I try to hit fast enough walking speed to get heart going. Will try to find that slower run pace that works. Appreciate all the support - it took a LOT of guts for me to even start working out in public, now I just have to have the guts…

But what about all the benefits I hear about high intensity interval training?

I see your point. I should clarify. When I work with a pre-made training program like C25K, then I mentally want to "trust" their plan - and if I don't follow it exactly - then I'm failing. (It's sort of an OCD thing.) I have found out the hard way though that you are right, in that real training has ups and downs and…

Thanks for the boost! C25K comes up often but it's structure just doesn't work for me. I'm motivated by distance or pace, and running for a set amount of time just drives me cuckoo. Also, for me, having to repeat a week just creates a failure factor. Currently I'm trying my own plan based roughly a 10% increase each week…

I appreciate the sentiment Scott :D But my actual 5k PB is at a 17:03 pace, have never broken a 16min mile yet, and my walking pace is usually more like 20:00min. So far, I have never met anyone who actually tracks their time that's as slow as I am - even folks who just got off the couch walk faster than I. It's a struggle…
-
Thanks for the advice. My concern is that in past training (which was for several months before being off for approx. 4 months), I have never been able to find a way to actually run. Very disheartening to train for so long without reaching your goal. *sigh* If I go slow enough to maintain a conversation pace, then I'm…

I have large feet (for a woman) in general and have found Asics to work pretty good. Hubby likes New Balance for his definitely wide feet. Tossing this out as ideas in case a running store is unavailable or unaffordable. Do however, purchase your shoes at a place with a generous return policy and make use of it if the new…

I don't know about the insoles, but I do know from personal experience that what shoes you wear can make a real difference. Even just changing a brand or model of athletic shoe can totally change how your body feels after exercise. Took some experimenting but I went from severe calf pain to zero calf pain just by changing…

Thanks for the suggestions, links and ideas. Sounds like I'm on the right track...I think. Background: Last summer (before a lapse in training), I was up to walking 6 miles at a 20 min pace, last spring I did a 5k with a PB time of 52min.

My brain and my emotions. If a training plan says run 30 sec - I want to run 30 sec (not 31 - not 28) and so I was basically trying to run with my watch in front of my face. May sound weird but think of me as a little OCD (no offense intended to those struggling with real cases of this disorder). I tried using a timer but…

Awesome! Congrats on reaching the running (I detest the word jogging) stage  As someone who's been doing a walk / run thing for quite awhile trying to get up to speed to do some distance races I did want to offer one warning if you get interested in doing the same thing. I focused for a long time on increasing my…

I can't share a story bout how it got better - but I can tell you that you are not alone. I need to lose somewhere in the 90 to 120 lb range and have always dreamed of being a runner. I, too, have never run a mile - heck, probably have never run a half-mile, in my life. It truly stinks to have so much trouble with…

7.37 down - 4.63 to go till I move into the bonus round :)

Music makes a workout bearable *smile* But my main motivation is (are?) the things I want TO DO. I want to finish the Indianapolis Mini Marathon. I have wanted to run this since I was in high school. I want to run a Spartan / Warrior Dash style race. I want to be competitive in the local Fast Flash 5k (me and the police…

Okay - getting a little confused *smile* For example, when I add steak - sirloin to my food diary (bought at store, trimmed, I added nothing to it, just grilled it) it says it has 58mg of sodium per ounce - or 348 for a six ounce serving. Skim milk (again - straight from the store, nothing done to it) is 191 mg for a 10 oz…

LOL! I love playing on that playground too! It's a fun one :)

4.63 down, 7.37 to go - I think I made this too easy :) (Of course, now I have to worry about jinxing myself *sigh*)
-
Also joining in a little late :) Since I've never tried recovering from a race b4 (attempted the Mini last Saturday) - I'm going to set it low for now with a minimum of 12 miles from May 7th to the 31st. Did .5 Tuesday, .75 yesterday ....working the math.... 1.25 down, 10.75 to go.

Thank you! Currently, my training is set up pretty much as you suggest - I'm supposed to do 3 short "runs" (if I even run just a few steps I count it as a "run" *grin* - mental mind-game) and 1 long "run" each week. I'll be honest - it's tough though with all the kidlings. They are all involved in activities and we live in…

You forgot to mention the belly-dancers *wink*
