  • Welcome to running! And a 5k is an excellent race to start with - they are doable and they are so much fun! If you're in "bad shape" *smile* I don't know what I am then - LOL! I'm also 5'5" and the same age except I'm closer to 265lbs. Did train for and finish a half marathon last fall (without losing a pound, I'm afraid…
  • Yes I did - so hard to take that first walk break when everyone else is still pushing hard - but the best way for me to "get'er done" :)
  • My 2 cents :) I'm about 100lbs heavier than you and went from doing nothing to finishing a half last fall. But everyone's different so here's what worked for me - your proverbial mileage may vary. 1) Run if you like running - if you don't like it find a different exercise. 2) If both feet leave the ground at the same time,…
  • And if C25K doesn't work for you - don't give up! It didn't for me. I couldn't stand repeating weeks - made me feel like a total failure. Then I switched to Jeff Galloway's run/walk method. Completed my first half last fall and getting ready to start training for my next.
  • Update - decided on a visual reminder, and went with my preference for the unconventional (it amuses me and holds me attention better) - sounds crazy, I know, but I spotted a large ladle that hangs in the kitchen - today's goal - simply use the ladle to get a drink of water every time I pass through the kitchen. (No…
  • Hmm...that might work too. I like the idea of time slots because it would help me identify groups of calories instead of if I ate a particular meal or not. I've been guilty of eating dinner for example simply because I thought it was time for an official meal rather than because I was hungry. Taking the labels off and…
  • A book called "Making Peace with Things in Your Life" has been very helpful. Background is that I was a super-organized child but lived a very sheltered life. Traded that for the beautiful, wonderful, happy, utterly-insane chaos of raising six children (3 of them in less than 5 years). As noted in that book, everyone is…
  • Not yet. It's something I'm considering and I appreciate you mentioning it. I don't want to get into all the details, but I do belong to a counseling group on disorganization and am working on many aspects of my life beyond just trying to improve my eating that should help. I'm old enough to have learned a great deal of…
  • Great idea - Thank you! That's exactly that kind of simple step advice I can use! :) I appreciate the support.
  • Run #2 for the month in the books - another 2miler in the neighborhood, but I'm giving myself bonus points because I did it on only 4hours sleep, couldn't find my gymboss, and the plastic holder thingy fell off one of my earbuds so I was runnning in mono  So far I'm feeling good with this run/walk system I'm…
  • No run today - got caught and had to stay over at work, then came home to a sick kid. Did do my strength training here though and did some window shopping for new running shoes.
  • @GBrady43068 - yeah I'm with you there! Had to give up martial arts due to the torque on the knees. So far doing okay with running / walking. My goal is to finish my first half in October - gotta stay uninjured to get there though. That's my motivation for weight-loss - though I'm not very good at it (yet) though.
  • Oh joy. LOL! Another new account thing? I'll look into it. I like the Garmin Connect dashboard - just want a couple people I can cheer on / challenge with. Got six kids so I'm already having to follow fb, twitter, snapchat, insta-whatever, pintrest, so forth just to keep up with them and their things. (typed in a friendly…
  • Thanks I sent you a request thing - On there I'm Lindyfromindy
  • Hi all. New to group. March challenge is simply to get in 8 runs (and do the 4miler I signed up for on March 19th). Sort of new to running as in I've been trying to become one for years but after a little while (few weeks / couple months) life / kids / craziness happens and training gets shoved right off the list. Working…
  • It's hard to come back after a burn-out. And as a fellow mom of six, almost full-time employee, as well as a wife, volunteer and former student - trust me - burn out is real. I'd suggest trying to make your exercise time your "play" time instead of a routine. Don't even attempt to track any numbers at first - just take…
  • For me, it's a battle to get my carbs under control and get my proteins up. I'll worry about tracking sugar again once my macros are more in line with the generally accepted guidelines. I'm happy for those able to make big changes in a short time, but for my mental health it's a baby step here and a baby step there. And I…
  • It happens even if you ARE extremely overweight. I am 5'6" and been at or around 250 to 270 for years now. And every single time I vaguely have brought up wanting to eat better, or lose a little weight, I've gotten bombarded by the "Oh no! You might be a little chubby, but you're not FAT!" And it's always a signal to my…
  • BTDT on more than one occasion. Always wonder what the police officer following discreetly 20 yards behind me was thinking. My suggestion is that you do plan on doing this one again next year (even with the heat) just for the sheer satisfaction of seeing how much you progress between now and then.
  • I would start doing lots of foot and calf stretches. I found this article helpful - http://running.competitor.com/2014/06/photos/new-techniques-treating-plantar-fasciitis_96398 One thing you didn't mention was pain upon standing up first thing in the morning, or after sitting - that's been my issue and I've been having…

  • Can you bribe yourself with something else? I was having a really rough day but was able to stay under my calorie count by promising myself a new dvd that I really wanted. Anything you can give yourself that you normally deny yourself that doesn't have to do with food can be a reward - and motivation to not pick up that…
  • But it's not just about the weight - but things like making time for myself to train (workout). To do so means less time for other things - which may include time with my kids/husband/or elderly mom. And then what will I feel if something happens to one of them and I regret the time I spent working out instead of being…
  • LOL! The ONLY reason I didn't use the OCD label in my original post was that I haven't been formally diagnosed. I definitely have traits and behaviors that fit this category. I know my struggle isn't with actual weight loss at all, but with all the behaviors and thoughts (good and bad) that got me "here", and deciding…
  • I like how you think. Definitely something worth thinking about. I do know there's lots of levels and changes of thinking/emotions going on in me right now. I appreciate everyone's support.
  • Wow. That makes a very great deal of sense! Thank you
  • H.O.P.E. - Hang on, pain ends. Don't look back, you're not going that way. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person that walked in. That's what the storm is all about. And my absolute favorite: Do it scared.
  • How'd it go today? Hope you had a great race!

  • I like the Asics Gel as well. (I have large feet - can't fit into a Nike). Hubby likes New Balance. We're beginner runners in terms of speed/distance. Veteran runners in terms of time spent running. We buy the cheaper ($75 retail) models but replace them about every six months or when our calves/knees start getting achy.
