I'd like to point out something that is definitely true for my area of expertise (physics) but perhaps in bio-medical sciences that's different, so please correct me if that's not the case. The frontline of research deals with things that are not well understood by scientists and there are conflicting theories and…

Random geeky tidbit: Assuming the OP is 38yo (as by her username), she would have needed to start running 3-4 times every single day of her life to make this the 50,000th one. Burst of geekiness over. Carry on. PS: OP, I've finished c25k. I enjoyed some of my runs, but hated most of them. I can't say I'm a runner but I…

Great post! So true!

I've been lurking in this thread for a long time now, you all make beautiful dishes. Here's my first attempt to contribute with a remake of a Cretan dish (roasted chicken with okra and potatoes) using Okinawan vegetables The veggies: red okra, purple sweet potato, winged beans and orange zucchini They were baked in the…

150.1km done, challenge completed! :drinker: Now quickly move on to August

The statement in bold is wrong. The universe had energy well before life formed. The total energy in the universe remains constant, but it changes forms, e.g. it goes to the ground & air as we decompose. Not "spirits". [Edited to fix typo]

Thanks again, that's clear & it makes sense. Just so that it's clear what I had in my mind, 2kg/week loss means a daily deficit of 2000kcal. For the example I mentioned earlier, a middle aged woman with a mostly sedentary lifestyle, that translates into ~1000-1200kcal as a daily goal. Not a VLCD but quite close.

That makes sense, thank you Sara. One last question (sorry for hijacking this thread): in such cases in which a high loss rate is preferable, isn't there an issue regarding vitamin & other micronutrient deficiency, especially since this rate will probably last for months? Is it preferable anyway despite this issue or do…

I suppose that's per week, right? It sounds reasonable. I'm asking this mainly because I'm puzzled with someone on my FL who's doing a very aggressive diet (losing ~2kg/week for ~4months now) but is morbidly obese (initial BMI ~55) so any intuition I'd have is useless. With the 1.5% of total weight you suggest that…

Excellent post! As always, there's so much reason in this group! I've been wondering though, how can you judge whether a diet is too low calorie / weight loss is too fast? I know it depends on number of variables, especially starting weight & body fat percentage, but are there any rules that can help you draw the line?

I'm in for 150km again.

140.1km done. Almost there!

I'm interested!

Brilliant. LOL

I'm a Greek living in Japan. I mostly miss dairy - greek yogurt, feta, other local cheeses. Actually I just ordered 2kg of feta online for $100  but I know I'll savor every single bite. I miss a lot of vegetable dishes I can't really make here (can't find the right ingredients), roasted lamb, all sort of pastries made…

110km done up to now

Try again.

75.4km done up to now, halfway through!

Thank you for the reply. I was suspecting the answer would be something like that. I've been wondering though, what do TDEE calculators use to estimate caloric needs? Or the value that MFP gives for 'weight training'? Where does it come from? [Sorry for asking so many questions, I know nothing about these things and seeing…

I need to make this!

Absolutely, I know that. I'm just asking out of curiosity.

Thank you for posting this, it's very useful. One question regarding the chart though: if I read it correctly, I'd assume I could get a better estimate for my calories burnt during e.g. weight lifting by using a factor of 20-25% on my HRM's reading. Is that correct or does it vary so much that it's practically useless?

48km up to now!

Yay!!!

I'm a physicist doing research in solid state physics so I use quantum mechanics every day in my work. My s.o. is a cosmologist, so we chat about physics a lot (maybe a bit too much) at home. And of course at work I'm always surrounded with people arguing about their calculations in front of blackboards or discussing the…

My total for June was 122.7km (goal was 150km). It wasn't a good month, hopefully July will be better. ETA: I've changed my username, was gamelyne before.

I'm in again. 150km the target for this month, 4.3km done up to now. ETA: I've changed my username, I used to be gamelyne.

LOL at the dairy scare Japanese milk is the creamiest I've ever tasted. I'm spoilt for life now.

The article is spot on. I live in Japan for a year now and from the very beginning I was surprised with their food, it's not that 'healthy'. Then I went for a trip to the US and I was really shocked with the portion sizes. Japanese portions look like this Compare that with Edit: I'm too lazy to resize, sorry for the huge…
