I am also training for a marathon, and lift 3X per week via Body Pump. Here's the thing, even though you are training to run 26.2 miles, you should not focus on only running. A couple of things could happen--knee injury, overuse injury, and burn out. I ran a marathon in 2008 and have ran several halves, triathlons, and…

Shoes are important, but also remember you are working new muscles. If you have good shoes and still have issues, it will take building those muscles up. My shins hurt tremendously when I started to become active in general. I got the shoes, did the orthotics, and still had pain. As I began to build my muscles, the pain…

A caloric deficit simply means if your body needs 2000 calories just to make it through a normal day, give it 1800. Your body needs a 3500 calorie deficit to lose one pound. If you cut 500 calories and burn 500 calories per day, you can healthfully lose 2 lbs per week. I lost 100 lbs over a 2 year period. That was over 10…

I'll speak to you from experience....as a woman with larger muscles, you need to make sure they stay sculpted. I tease and say that I have boy legs, but I would rather have them look toned and muscular than just be big slabs of jiggly. Truth is your muscles aren't going to grow any bigger than your body is designed for. If…

If you exercise frequently and you are the type that enjoys pushing your workouts to the max....crosstrain! I am a group fitness instructor, runner and a triathalete. I train or workout everyday in some capacity, but there are two things that make me strong and able to push myself on days that I need to: crosstraining, and…

BOdy Pump is an awesome format and a great workout. I'm not sure about the at home one they recently came out with. I have been certified in Body pump, Body Jam, Body Combat, and RPM for about 5 years and love their programs. Body Pump and P90X are very different though. Body Pump is a cardio strength training workout that…

Running is a great way to lose weight! I've always been told that you can lose 100 calories per mile, no matter how fast or slow you go (this is average of course) but it is a great cardio regardless! I do one long run per week and a few short runs during. I also do cycle, step, and body pump. I also recently started…

Congrats! One thing I would suggest at your new gym is to join in on some group fitness classes! I have been an instructor for years, but before that I was 100lbs overweight and it was my Step buddies that kept me encouraged to keep coming. We were all on the same journey and it felt good to be held accountable to people…

I used to hate running, but about 7 years ago decided to shake up my cardio and do a 5K.....now full marathon, dozens of halves, and 100's 5k's later.... The trick for me was to channel my inner competitiveness...once I started doing that, I was able to stick with it until one day I experienced that "Runners High" everyone…

If you have access to a pool, aqua cardio. Swimming or aqua aerobics

Did you do a fitness diet for weight lifting? If so, what did your diet consist of? My old roommate did a very extreme diet to get ready for competition and it turned me off to it. I do about 10-12 hours of cardio per week and 3-4 Body Pump/Group Power Classes as an instructor, but I struggle with the right portions of…

Congrats on being so close to your goal! You are doing good by exercising even without access to a gym. There are alot of things you can do to tone up your abs. I am a fitness instructor and have been given alot of training on different formats, but Pilates is my absolute favorite core training. There are several DVDs…

I am divorced and work one full time job, one part time job as a fitness instructor, and am going to school part time for Masters in Accounting. I am always tired! I agree with this one. If you have sex with someone on the first date, it doesn't necessarily have to be all about sex. I tried to instill a "10 date rule" saying if they made it to 10 dates I might have sex with them. Well I was never having sex because I never let anyone get to 10 dates (turned out to be losers by 3rd…

I buy the chocolate protein powder from walmart, saw it had the same as the expensive stuff I was buying from Complete Nutrition. I mix the full serving in with a half cup of oats and eat for "2nd breakfast" (first being egg whites). This tastes great and adds great variety to my plain ole oatmeal!
