I live in Torrance and thought it would be a cool place to bring my son. I wonder if they have a weight limit, because I'm still over 300. I think my step sister went. I should ask her what she thought.

I guess I'll throw in my 2 cents. And -- I think whatever works (permanently!) for you, do it! Here's my plan/philosophy: 1) Eat the foods I like, but eat the calorie dense/less nutritious things in infrequently and in moderation (calories in/calories out) 2) Exercise is VITAL, but it doesn't have to be in a gym. Cardio,…

Nice job. I've been doing Power 90 (Day 45). I've lost about 25 lbs so far. I'm a bit bored with it now, but I want to finish it, so I'm going to try to make it through the 90 days. Unfortunately, because of my size, 25 pounds doesn't make a dramatic difference to the look of my body. :)

Thanks for actually providing cited sources.Although to be honest, most of them are over my head. Too much technical speak for my little brain. With that said, I still don't see an answer to my original question. Why is eating at or above BMR "OK" but eating below BMR "bad."
-
you make a lot of assertions as if they are fact (such as rates of metabolism slow down etc) but provide no sourced.
-
I will be away from the computer for awhile, so won't be checking this thread. Please don't feel ignore. :)

For some reason, I can't read the whole article, but the abstract seemed like it was more about how after weight loss, there is a slower metabolism that doesn't "bounce back" right away. I've seen other studies that do suggest that it does. But I didn't see anything in the abstract about eating above/below your BMR.
-
But you've ignored where i've said that I thing a very large caloric deficit is unhealthy. I understand that as someone who has a lot of weight to lose, I'm in a different boat than someone who has to lose 20 pounds. The problem is, the "Do not eat below your BMR" is a general guideline that "prescribed" to everyone.…
-
Ok.. Then why is a calorie deficit above BMR different than one below it? Wouldn't both eat muscle first?
-
No, because as I've stated ad naseum -- you HAVE TO put your body into energy deficiency to lose weight. Whether that's below BMR or above it.
-
Let's give my numbers. My BMR according to MFP is 2,547. However, before exercise, MFP assigns me 2180 calories to lose 2 pounds a week. This is below my BMR. Many sites say that I can lose as much as 1% of my body weight, so I feel like I can safely lose 3.5 pounds a week (that's decreasing as I lose weight -- as of today…

Thanks for reading it in more depth. Nice analysis.

I'm not quite following. What if you're not working out? How about 2 lazy people are at a calorie deficit. One is eating their BMR and the other is eating below their BMR. Is the one eating at/above their BMR losing mostly fat but the one below losing mostly muscle? Here's the other thing. Obviously, the only true way to…

Low-carbers might. But I get the point. I didn't get to read the full article (I only saw the abstract), but it looks interesting, thanks. This seemed to be more about how quickly someone should lose weight, rather than eating below their BMR. It concluded with losing no more than .7% of your body weight each week. It was…

I've already responded to almost this exact post by about 15 other people. See posts above. In fact, my first post is a response to pretty much this exact argument. In order to lose weight, you need to have a calorie deficit. That means, you are burning more calories than you are consuming. Your body needs to make up this…

A B S T R A C T: The effects of starvation, an 800-kcal mixed diet and an 800-kcal ketogenic (low carbohydrate-high fat) diet on the composition of weight lost were determined in each of six obese subjects during three 10-day periods. That is a study of people on an 800 calorie diet, not just people eating below their BMR.…

That's the other problem (and someone mentioned it). There is a probably a fairly large margin of error for all this. How accurate is your estimated BMR? How accurate is your calorie intake estimate? How accurate is your exercise expenditure estimate? Etc.
-
Maybe I'm not finding them. I found 2 that had to do with hibernation and one that was a link to a google scholar search (not an article) for anorexia (not eating below your BMR).
-
Which studies? [/quote]
-
Exactly. It's as if the body is saying -- to keep the heart pumping, I'm going to take energy from the muscles, but to fuel your workout I'm going to use food or fat.
-
The thing about these studies -- and what they actually call starvation mode is that these people were eating WELL below their BMR. The minnesota study had them eating, at one time, about 50% of their BMR. These were already lean people -- so they were probably on about 800 calories or less. I'm not suggesting that isn't…

This is pretty much what about 75% of the responses to my question said. And it's pretty much what my original post was responding to. If you are in a calorie deficit (AT ALL), your body needs to get that energy from somewhere. It's not ONLY if you are eating below your BMR. If you are eating above your BMR, but still in a…

I started a new thread, so I won't hijack this one. If you'd like to respond to me, do so here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/558894-eating-below-your-bmr-why-is-it-bad

Also, help me make sense of this. In order to lose weight you HAVE TO have a calorie deficit. So whether you're eating at, above, or below your BMR, the only way you can lose weight is if at the end of the day/week, etc you are burning more calories than you're consuming. So why would eating below your BMR mean that your…

Can you provide some links? I have not been able to find anything that supports that theory except from blog and forum posts.

I think you mean fat2fit. :) I think they recommend the calories based on your BMR (excluding multiplier) + exercise. So if your BMR is 2000 and your exercise is 500, they'd recommend 2500. MFP, does it a little different it uses your BMR (plus the multiplier) and subtracts your goal (i.e. 500 calories a day) and excludes…

Awesome. Great job. I'm about half way through Power 90 right now (Thursday is day 45). Not sure what I'm going to do after it, because I still don't think I'm fit enough to do P90x. I've also not been using the Phase 1/2 cardio, instead I'm using the Fat Burning Express DVD that was shot in Hawaii. I liked it better and…

Glad to see you here. I started on here about a month ago. It's a good community. I love reading the "Success Stories" thread. Keeps me motivated. I also post updates on my Facebook so my friends will keep me accountable. :)

Planning a trip to Sea World (San Diego) next Month. My son will be 5, so I hope it he had a good time. I can't wait until I get smaller so that I can fit in rides "comfortably" again. I'm also about 6'3", so shoulder harnesses can still be a pain. :)
