Yes it counts. The weight was lost in a different way obviously, but never the less it is gone. I think keeping it off will be harder than a person who worked hard for a year to burn it off.

I agree 100%. Ignorant people who get tattoos with out meaning are of no interest to me. It's a shame that people get tattoos now as a fashion statement instead of expressing your own personal story.
