  • I second the suggestion of yoga. I saw some of the biggest gains in upper body/core strength and definition when I started vinyasa yoga. I used to think yoga was a powder puff workout, until I tried it! There are so many free yoga workouts on youtube. Look for the ones that focus on strength. They're not all great but I…
  • You've made a step forward in realizing that you look outward for the justification/blame for your eating habits. Not falling back into your old mental patterns is going to be a large part of the challenge. I don't agree with the idea that weight loss is a simple calories in/calories out calculation. It may be true from a…

  • Lots of good advice here about planning snacks, etc. For me, the evenings are difficult not so much because of hunger but rather because of habit. I used to snack mindlessly in front of the tv. Also, if I'm tired I turn to food when instead, I should just go to bed. Two changes have helped. First, I get my night time…
  • I've read in various places, that one of the general differences between the way men and women communicate is that men often communicate functionally. That is, if presented with a problem (in this case, a wife that berates herself), men try to solve the problem. They may offer solutions, suggestions, etc. Women often…
  • Someone posted a video of Brene Brown's research about shame earlier in the thread. Her years of study are all about the definition and effects of shame. She draws a sharp distinction between shame/guilt. Shame tells a person that they are not acceptable, worthy of love or inclusion. Shame is about a person's intrinsic…
  • I've got just about identical stats. It just goes slow. If you're doing it right, try to be patient. What's a few weeks in the big picture? The only bad thing that could happen here is that you get so frustrated that you quit. One thing that has helped me is to put away the scale. Since I'm not willing to starve myself and…
  • If I had a friend like yours, I'd be sure to clean up my own medicine cabinet. She might have an eensy issue with observing boundries. She may have already been through your stuff.
  • Welcome back! What's that saying? The only failures are the ones who quit. Something like that. There are sooo many of us who just keep slogging away at this, so don't get down on yourself. The holidays are my danger zone as well. In the past, the holiday slide starts at Halloween and just gets worse until the end of…
  • I agree. Another thing to consider with binges is that sometimes they have emotional causes. So, are binges something you've had to deal with in the past? Or is it new? If they are new, it's more likely that diet deprivation is the trigger. If you have a binge history, you'll need to do some work to get in touch with what…
  • Like you I did WW years ago when they had the "Week -end Option" for banking points. It worked really well for me. I don't eat the same way every day. Calorie heavy events tend to be on the weekend. I can be much more regimented during the week. So I definitely bank calories.
  • Never heard of the store, but getting fitted for a good pair of shoes is essential. If you have foot problems, you might need shoe inserts made for your specific issues. My advice: wear the new shoes for a few runs. If your foot problem persists, get a good shoe insert. Good Feet store, etc is a place to look. It's a lot…
  • I have dark chocolate just about every day. My current obsession is Chocolove bars with sea salt. For some reason, I can eat just one serving and not lose control. I can't do that with milk chocolate, though.
  • You're bound to get all kinds of advice on this. The clean eaters may advise any frozen meal is too much. Others will say eat anything as long as you stay under your calorie goal. I'd say one a day is fine, as long as you're keeping an eye on your overall sodium intake. If you're also eating in restaurants, the sodium will…
  • It doesn't sound "into myself". It's sounds like self empowerment. That's been one of the biggest side benefits of getting fit for me. When I crossed the finish line of my first half marathon, I had a "rawrrr" moment and thought "What else have I missed out on because I set my goals too low? What else can I achieve?"
  • Your daughter is lucky to have your example. There are so many competing influences in the life of a child. I do believe, though, that parents exert the most influence, either through positive or negative example.
  • I think for some people, binges aren't the result of over restriction, but rather difficult emotions. My approach is moderation, but I still have the occasional, unplanned binge. When this happens, it's not about the food; it's about my state of mind and emotions.
  • Just for today, I will eat to feed my body, not to cover unpleasant emotions. Also: Just for today, I will not believe that occasional mistakes are iron clad predictors of future failure.
  • Usually I binge on crunchy texture foods: cookies, crackers, chips, etc, but NEVER fruit or veggies!
  • Love almond milk, but I go for the original vanilla (60 cal). To me it's the closest to dairy milk in sweetness. The sweetened vanilla is awesome, but you can definately taste the sweetness. The only thing I don't like it in is tea/coffee. Ick. But other than that, it works well.
  • A therapist and/or support group would really help with this. Three words in your post jump out at me: ashamed, depressed and stressed. Trying to go it alone while overwhelmed with the emotions is probably not the best route. Trying to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps (my age is showing here) will be hard. Reach out…
  • I don't like them. They are a total turn off for me. I have a question though. Many people seem to start getting tats at a young age (teens/20's). When I think about the way my tastes and preferences have changed since I was that age, I wonder how many tattooed people regret getting them after time has passed? Or regret…
  • You're right. It's going to be hard to sustain 1300 calories because that's low. Go into your settings and change your goal to something less aggressive, like .5 lbs per week. If you exercise, eat back your exercise calories. I know it's tempting to try to lose the weight quickly, but if your stomach is growling and you're…
  • Great article Thanks for sharing. I love your advice to avoid over complicating things. That's the beauty of running. Just lace up and go.
  • I"m not sure where you live, but check out some of the smaller, discount grocery stores. I'm hopeless with coupons, but I save a bunch by shopping at aldi. The produce is good and if you don't mind store brand, you'll be able to get a lot of your shopping done there w/o resorting to name brands. I ditto the "forgive…
  • Exercise, yes. Skip meals, no. It's one meal. No big deal. Skipping meals will set you up to be over hungry for your next meal, possibly leading to over eating. Just carry on as usual, only wiser from your mistake.
  • Everything.
  • Emotional eating is a tough one. I get upset when I read posts that say things like: "Food is just fuel" (Tell that to the many who use it as a numbing tool, a security blanket, to head off boredom or anxiety). " Losing weight is simple. Just eat more than you burn" (I've known the calorie in/calorie out equation for…
  • Go ahead and run, but couldn't hurt to get to a minute clinic. If you've got an ear infection brewing, some antibiotics asap will help you feel better quickly.
  • Music with a driving beat and no lyrics (podrunner podcasts) so I can just get into the zone and get lost in my head. Also, switching up the run: hills, speed intervals...whatever I can think of that keeps my mind and body challenged.
  • Every 2-3 weeks, but only if I feel a difference in the way my clothes fit. Weighing too often makes me a little nuts. Logically I know weight fluctuates daily (or even hourly), but it still bums me to see the scale go up. So I wait. Really, the weight trend over time is what matters to me.
