  • kayaking (you can rent them at almost any recreational lake), hike a mountain, find a cool watering hole and go swimming, paddleboarding up a river. I can't wait!
  • In! I'm doing minutes only. Week # 1 – March 30th - Goal 300 minutes: Mon: Rest Tue: 60 min - Spin class Wed: Thur: Fri: Sat: Sun: Total / min left: 60 / 240
  • I used to have lots of shin pain when I started running years ago but it faded in time. I think a lot of it had to do with splurging on good running shoes that were recommended after a gait analysis at a running store, but at the same time I was also losing weight and doing bodyweight workouts as well. It could be a combo…
  • Hm...I'd say that it pretty much sounds like typical overuse soreness when using muscles you haven't used in a while (so basically shin splints), but it's weird that it didn't happen during your first round of C25K. I have no idea, sorry!
  • Did this just happen once? Was it today?
  • If it makes you feel any better, I never notice when my best friends gain/lose weight if I haven't seen them for a while. All I see is their familiar smile and it makes me ELATED to see them. Please don't cancel. Your bff loves you and is excited to see that smile and catch up. Don't worry about what her husband could…
  • I never liked C25K either. I started running about 4 years ago on a whim when I was out walking. I ran from the light pole to the mailbox. Then the next time I ran to the next mailbox. Like you said, I just kept adding a little bit of distance. My problem at the beginning was also trying to run too fast, getting winded and…
  • I'm from north of Boston. Went to UMass Amherst and NU for grad school. Moved to TX 2 years ago and now I'm back up north in Jersey. I go home often :)
  • When I was living in Dallas, I ran in this park near my house in the morning when it was still dark. It wasn't lit at all so my biggest fear was literally running into something I couldn't see. I was sort of afraid of a personal attack since it wasn't a great neighborhood but I was prepared to fight. :) Thankfully nothing…
  • Yeah I can't see your diary either. A few possibilities just from experience: 1. Are you logging your cheat day? If not, you could be seriously overdoing it and making up for the deficit for the week and essentially maintaining. Unlikely but possible. 2. Are you weighing and/or measuring all of your food (including recipe…
  • I used to have that problem and what worked for me was having a little something sweet after dinner. Dessert to me signals the end of eating for the day so I know that after my little dessert, that's it. It's usually a fudgesickle because I love them but you can pick whatever you like.
  • Yeah, this is amazing. I was overweight my whole life until a few years ago and my mom was always so good at this. My mom is a tiny little thing and she never, ever said anything about how my body looks or my eating habits. She encouraged me to do activities I enjoyed and to try new things but never forced me to do (or not…
  • Just calculated it because I'm super bored at work :) Total Calories: 443 Fresh Express Spring Mix (she said she just uses the salad base) - 2 cups - 20 cals Wegman's Honey Roasted Mixed Nuts - 1/2 cup - 190 cals Cherry Tomatoes - 6 tomatoes - 18 cals Reduced Sugar Craisins - 1/9th cup (1 tbsp.-ish) - 25 cals Hard Boiled…
  • I used to chew it frequently (not a pack a day, but maybe a few pieces a day) and my jaw locked up on two different occasions. It stayed locked for days and was really painful so I stopped chewing gum and it never happened again. I always have a tin of Altoids Minis in my bag instead.
  • @futuremanda hit the nail right on the head. Take her advice and run with it. Today is my 3 year anniversary at my goal weight so I can vouch for her advice, including the stuff about body negativity. I was still unhappy with my appearance when I hit my goal weight because I had some separate issues to work out.
  • Similar! I had a tiny little notebook I carried around with me and wrote down what I ate and the calories (which were googled). Different page each day. I didn't think to weigh out anything so I'm sure my estimates were way off. My goal was 1200 because that's what I "heard" you should eat when "on a diet". If I would eat…
  • omg this. I had the best intentions when I started my HM training of lifting 2X per week. I did it once, could BARELY finish my super-short and easy run the next day and said nope. The most I did outside of running 3X per week was go to a dance class on Mondays. I also just figured I wasn't as dedicated as everything else.…
  • Yeah I was just going to say that the problem could be in the meals. Like for instance you have "Meatloaf - 1 slice" and "Veggie Fajitas". There are a zillion ways you can make these two meals and who knows how big "1 slice" really is? I know it sounds nit-picky but honestly getting a food scale and weighing out…
  • I got a Jawbone Up 24 for Christmas and I used it for about a week. I don't really care about reaching a certain number of steps through the day or anything. I go to work (in an office) and move when I can, and then I work out. Also the sleeping function just didn't work at all. I was awake when it said I was sleeping and…
  • haha I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner but if you're already working out 4X a week and if that's you in your profile pic, you can handle it!
  • Search youtube for "Jillian Michael's Kickbox Fastfix". There are 3 different workouts (all 20 minutes) focusing on upper body, lower body, and core if I'm remembering correctly. You could pair two of them for a good 40 minute workout. They get your HR up quick since they're so short too. A good bodyweight workout is…
  • I was fit for Brooks Ghost 6 and loved them. After they died I went back and they had me try the Ghost 7 (I liked them) and Adidas Supernova Glide 6 which I liked a tiny bit more than the Brooks so I went with those. Trained for and ran my first half marathon in them and they were excellent. No problems at all.
  • I've never seen anyone throw up at races and I've done maybe 20ish? You're good!
  • Here's a good beginners full-body workout using 11 of the common weight machines you'll see around the gym. It was a good foray into the weight section for me. http://www.workoutbox.com/workouts/muscle-building-workouts/rookie/beginners-muscle-building-workout-using-gym-machines/
  • Hey, welcome to MFP! I don't have experience with this but I've seen a few threads about it lately. You can search for them by going to the top of the "Message Boards" page. Under "Message Boards", there is a search link. Click on that then type in "Venus Factor" and all of the threads about it will come up. Hope that…
  • I run my mid-week runs fasted after a little coffee and going to the bathroom. For long runs on the weekend (over an hour) I have half of an English muffin with jam about an hour before I head out. I've tried a lot of different things but that seems to be the only thing that prevents stomach problems and keeps me feeling…
  • I need to sleep! The only cure for my insomnia is regular exercise and I can't fuel exercise with all the burritos.
  • Most of my friends are married and let me tell you, none of them reached their weight loss goals by their wedding days. It's almost impossible to say "I'm going to lose XX lbs by XX date" just because your body will let go of whatever it wants, whenever it wants, even if you're doing the same thing (diet and exercise wise)…
  • Yeah this is what I was thinking when reading through responses. Two things I wish people had told me when I started running: go SLOW (like, sometimes I was so slow that people were walking past me) and keep it consistent. I tended to lose my "running fitness" really quickly if I skipped too many days in between runs.…
