  • What has worked for me is finding a balance right in the middle. I like to have a routine for what I'm doing (run 3 days/week and cross-train 2 days/week) but I'm not so rigid about what days I do the workouts on. Personally, I'm a better runner when I do it every other day so I space out my running days. I love going to…
  • Same boat!! I'm training for my first half and I ran a 9 mile long run on Saturday. I was completely wiped afterwards and tried to take a nap but I think it was just too bright in my room to fall asleep. I basically zombied my way through the day and went to bed super early and slept in yesterday. I got about 10 hours of…
  • This 100%. I started driving 15 minutes away to a lake with trails around it for my weekend long run because I couldn't stand running loops around my neighborhood over and over. I run laps around a .85 mile loop and it got too easy to be like "eh, I'm just going to skip that last lap today".
  • That should be fun! I think it would be good to eat a little something so you have enough energy to make it through, but not so much that you're cramping or feeling sick. I usually eat half of an english muffin with jam (I can't handle PB! I tried!) about 70-90 minutes before I start running and I can make it through a 10…
  • yayyy awesome job!! Ocean swims terrify me! Maybe someday...
  • Breakfast 1: either oatmeal made with almond milk and cinnamon and raisins OR a cinnamon raisin english muffin with peanut/almond butter. And coffee of course. Breakfast 2: protein bar of choice. lately it's been Perfectly Simple (by Zone) and the oatmeal chocolate chip is amaze. Lunch: My usual is sliced bell peppers with…
  • This is me, too. I never eat the same number of calories every day because I'm always adjusting up or down for workouts or an event coming up where I want to indulge or that ice cream that I NEEDED that day. :) I keep a +/- 3lb range for myself and weigh once a week or so to check in. I don't log all the time but if I find…
  • Hi! Since you said the workouts are varied you could probably use the "circuit training" workout in myfitnesspal's database and maybe underestimate it a bit. If your classes are 1 hr, I would maybe put in 45 minutes of circuit training as your calories burned during a class. If you spend lots of time sitting/laying down…
  • I struggled with this at the beginning before I realized that I needed to change my life. I was the laziest kid growing up so I avoided all activities where I had to exert energy. I also LOVE food (especially "bad" food) to the point where I just accepted the fact that I will be overweight and unhealthy my whole life. This…
  • That's so awesome!! It goes to show that you can do anything if you stick to it! I see a 5K in your future :)
  • This has definitely been a trial-and-error thing for me since I started working out in the mornings in July. Before that I ALWAYS worked out at night after work (before dinner). I'm training for a half marathon so I'm basically just running, but I found that if I'm running 5 miles or less (which is the longest my mid-week…
  • +2! It really changed a lot for me when I realized I was taking shallow breaths when running. I would also get a headache afterwards every time until I focused on taking deeper breaths.
  • I always run alone and before dawn in a mostly un-lit park. My boyfriend doesn't love that I do it, but he also will not run with me so I told him that's the only option. All the girls at work are completely appalled by the fact that I go alone. They say they won't even run outside alone in the daytime! (I live in Dallas,…
  • I run outside 3 days a week in the morning but I like to go to my gym at night for the classes.
  • 1. I think it's too much, especially if you're going all-out and you're not already in excellent shape 2. You will definitely get used to it and won't be sore anymore (weird I know), but I do wear padded shorts if I haven't been in a while and it helps, and I notice that a lot of people wear them reguarly. 3. Spinning can…
  • This. I use the Sony version. http://store.sony.com/sports-headphones-w-adjustable-ear-loop-zid27-MDRAS400EX//cat-27-catid-All-Headphones-Earbuds?vva_ColorCode=B9C145 I have tried so many different ones, including shelling out the money for Yurbuds, but these are the only ones that stay in my ears while running and they…
  • There isn't a workout called "cardio circuit", but there's "plyometric cardio circuit". Look up the official Insanity calendar and see if that's what your calendar meant.
  • My cube is way too visible to everyone to be able to do any exercises in it, so I just make sure to get up and take a walk around the office often, and I do 20 squats in the bathroom stall every time I go :) There's a gym in the building so sometimes I'll walk on the treadmill during my lunch break but I prefer eating…
  • They probably just want a head count so they can cut off RSVPs when they reach the max amount of bikes they have. I have been spinning for about a year without the padded shorts and I just bought myself some and wore them to my first class and WOWWWWW. Big difference! I strangely found them on the clearance rack at TJMaxx…
  • After 6 years of doing a Thanksgiving 5K in New England, I finally have it down! Temps are usually in the 30s (F). I wear leggings (I wore yoga pants at first which are fine, but leggings actually help keep my legs warmer), a moisture-wicking tank top with a long sleeve tech shirt over it, non-bulky gloves, and a fleece…
  • When I first started running I didn't really use a program. I would just go outside and run til I couldn't, then I would walk for a bit, then run, walk, etc. The next time I would try to push myself to go to "the next mailbox" or "the next light post". When you're consistent (running 3-4 days a week) it's pretty amazing…
  • I'm really picky about my clothes but I'm also really cheap! :) I get my running shorts from Old Navy (they are $15 but I stock up when they are on sale. I got a bunch for $5 each the last time they went on sale). I like them better than Nike's tempo shorts which are $30. I don't like their tops because they have too much…
  • Yeah, this is something that concerns me too. I don't think it ever got to the point where I needed to find a bathroom ASAP (but I run at a park near my house so I know I can make it home in a few minutes if I REALLY had to) but I usually get some kind of stomach pain/cramping at some point during my run. I actually didn't…
  • It just kind of depends on where your body wants to release the fat from when you lose weight. I've always had big thighs. I'm 5'8" and was 139lbs at my lowest weight (around 145lbs now) and my thighs really didn't get much smaller, but everything else did. I have a really small chest, waist, and hips/butt and then…
  • My favorite is a packet of tuna salad with Ritz roasted veggie crackers, hummus and baby carrots or sliced bell pepper, a piece of fruit, and greek yogurt for a mid-afternoon snack. I usually have a mid-morning protein bar too. I bring the above twice a week usually, and the other days I'll bring leftovers or a big salad.…
  • I started running 6 years ago. My best friend and I always had a tradition where we went out to breakfast on Thanksgiving, which is pretty dumb. She started running our town's turkey trot 5K and then would meet me for breakfast after, so I figured we should probably just do the turkey trot instead of breakfast! I did the…
  • Ditto! But I was in an all-out sprint for the last 30 seconds so I could get under 30 minutes!
  • I'm on week 3 of a 16 week training program for my first half. I run 3X per week. For crosstraining I'll go to a spin class, swim laps, or lift (and occasionally a dance class because I love it!). I take 1 or 2 rest days per week and when I do totally depends on how tired/sore/in need of rest I feel.
  • Ditto! I went to tour the YMCA and was like "meh it's okay" and I figured their membership rates must be dirt cheap. NOPE. I left and toured Lifetime (fell in love obviously) and their membership was $10 cheaper for individuals and even cheaper for couples and families.
  • I have a Giant Escape that I got a couple years ago at a bike shop for $450. It's nice! I've never had a road bike or mountain bike though so I can't really compare it to anything. I'm training for a mini-duathlon on it (just an 8 mile bike ride in between 2 short runs). Anything longer and I might get a road bike but 8…
