  • I'd say I exercise more for the enjoyment. IMO the amount of calories burned off by exercise isn't worth doing it for that reason. But the biggest reason I exercise is to reduce muscle loss that happens during weight loss, since I have a lot of weight to lose.
  • Two things - they happened around the same time: -I was facing major surgery for glaucoma. In my case, the condition wasn't weight-related, but it made me want to take control of the issues in my life I could control. I didn't want to add weight-related problems (diabetes, heart disease, etc.) on top of what I already had…
  • I'm on the ketogenic diet. It's not a quick fix or a substitute for calorie counting - calories still count and you can gain weight eating low carb. But it does help reduce insulin spikes and does help in weight loss, especially if you have metabolic issues, which I have. I have lost 44 lbs, 9 of it with paleo and 35 with…
  • Keto really should be a long-term commitment, because you'll lose water weight before losing fat, so unless you're on it long-term, the weight loss will be temporary. It still goes along with CICO - if you're doing well with basic calorie counting and have just hit a plateau, keto for a month is pretty much pointless. It's…
  • I think 0murtagh0 has nailed it. I just want to add the pros and cons from my perspective. I've been on the diet since late June and have lost 35 pounds on this way of eating - more than I've lost on any other plan. Pros: For me, it's a sustainable way to eat, and I could eat like this forever. Most of my favorite foods…
  • I've been on keto since late June of this year. Starting to get back active on MFP forums again (though I track elsewhere due to net carbs). HW: 334.4 lbs Keto SW: 325 lbs CW: 296.8 lbs GW: 140 So I have a lot to lose, but keto has helped me to lose more weight than I have on anything else, and I'm back in the 200s for the…
  • For me a combination of low-carb and cico works for me. The low-carb (paleo-ish) eating is for two reasons - I have insulin resistance and PCOS (so lowering sugar intake helps with both), and it helps me to manage my food intake overall since I no longer have a taste for processed sugars. I still track calories so I don't…
  • I started with 204 to lose. I have restarted the journey recently and I have lost 17 lbs so far. I have a very long way to go, but this took decades to gain and it's not going away overnight. For me, I do a combination of paleo/mostly "clean eating" and calorie-counting (so I don't eat too little and crash my metabolism. I…
  • You don't have to go to the gym to exercise. It will be helpful because they have machines and weights to help tone your muscles, but if you're looking to just move, walking is free and you don't need a ride. Also, you can get exercise videos that allow you to work out in front of the TV. DDP Yoga and Hip Hop Abs are my…
  • I don't have issues at work, but since I recommitted to the weight loss wagon, we haven't had a full-scale "office is ordering lunch" day, just the "pastries are in the breakroom" day. At this point I honestly don't have a taste for processed sugar (I'm eating something akin to paleo and my taste buds seem to be changing).…
  • I will find something comparable from a chain and log it that way. When DH and I go out for dinner we tend to go to local eateries, and this has worked for me.
  • Without knowing exactly what you're currently eating, my thought is this... You may want to focus on eating more protein and vegetables, and fewer carbs. It can help you feel fuller on fewer calories. It can also help with the insulin resistance and PCOS (which I also contend with so I get it).
  • Welcome Kamber!

  • Several months ago before I started on MFP, I went to the mall and tried on a pair of jeans in what I thought was my size in a slim cut. I couldn't even button them, and it sucked because it was the largest size they carried in-store. I bought a different cut in the same size that was fuller, but even those were a bit…
  • Doesn't sound super appetizing. But I can't hate on frapps in general. I love the green tea one the most. But I rarely get frappuccino because I don't generally care to drink many of my calories.
  • Try preparing them different ways. I don't care for most canned vegetables, but I enjoy fresh or frozen vegetables. I especially enjoy sauteing/stir-frying vegetables using olive oil and a diversity of spices. In my spice cabinet I have a Mediterranean, Indian, Italian and Mexican spices and spice blends, and this stuff…
  • I live in a decent-sized city and it's the most expensive option unless you have a family (it's just myself and DH, and DH doesn't do gyms so I'd get a single membership). I have a Planet Fitness black card for $20 a month which lets me work out at both the one near my house and the one on the way to work.
  • This week, my goal was to get at least 4000 steps in daily, which I've done so far. I've also committed to actually walking with my DH and my doggie daily (he had been walking him by himself a lot as I come home later in the day), which I've been good about.
  • Thank you!

  • It depends. The only high-calorie condiment I use somewhat often is barbecue sauce, and I track that. I don't eat mayo and rarely eat ketchup, and I don't track hot sauce, sriracha, or spices.
  • Exactly this. I don't know in what world that making such a comment would be considered okay. I'm married also, but even if I were single I wouldn't give someone like that the time of day, because it sounds like I'm some kind of exception to the "rule" that big girls are unattractive - which is pretty rude to imply, even…
  • This 100%. To the OP: I love my mother dearly. I also know how she is about certain subjects, and I know that I cannot change her. And that's okay. So I don't bring them up with her. If my mom says something I disagree with - with her, it's giving me Dr. Oz or Doctors tips - I let her talk, and I nod and smile, tell her…
  • 26 pounds since January is excellent. I have lost close to 27, but I've been working on it since late August. You're 26 pounds smaller than where you started, so that is definitely great progress - concentrate on the the fact that you ARE making progress.
  • I get not being able to eat certain fruits/veggies, but not all of them are the exact same taste-wise, and they do have different textures. I haven't eaten a pea in years, and I don't care for the traditional mixed vegetables. I also don't care for canned vegetables due to the mushiness and salt. But I find that I love…
  • What did you set you activity level to when you signed up for MFP? If you factored in your exercise when choosing your activity level (e.g. choosing "highly active" because you bike rather than due to having an active job), then you might be inadvertently double-counting your exercise. I got 1700 originally as a sedentary…
  • There is a lot of variation in fruits and veggies. How are they prepared when you eat them? Which ones have you eaten? My DH is kind of like this - not into vegetables at all. However, he will eat them and likes them when I cook them, probably because I tend to sauté or stir-fry them. If cooking with a little olive oil, it…
  • Tracking faithfully helps a lot. Then you can start slowly and learn to fit foods into your calorie allotment for the day. It also allows you to know where you can start making those changes. I have insulin resistance and PCOS, and living with someone who eats a lot of junk, this is how I track. I can't change what my DH…
  • This is why I do not miss dating. I did experience similar to the OP when I was doing online dating before I met my DH. I never lied about what I looked like, and sometimes I got rude comments. One that sticks out to me is once when I posted a profile that mentioned I was looking for serious and long-term, no casual…
  • I agree with all of this. Yes, people find different things attractive. But equating fat to laziness is size prejudice, plain and simple. Even if someone isn't "doing something" about their weight, that doesn't make that person lazy. Weight is not the only thing that matters in life, and it doesn't define you as s person.…
  • If you eat a lot of fast food or other processed foods, even the lower-calorie stuff often has lots of sodium. So that might be why you're retaining water, if that is the case. I agree with those who say to see a doctor if you're concerned. The doctor will be able to tell you for sure if you're retaining water and if it's…
