Thanks, Harley!

Eat them back, but know that it's easy to overdo this. For instance, you probably don't need to refuel after an easy 20 minute jog. People tend to go a little nuts because they feel they've earned it. Also time your calories right. Eating after a workout is better than before. And quality counts--lean proteins, lots of…

It's a Polar, very basic. Tells me HR, percent of maximum (or the actual number), time, calorie burn, percent of those calories from fat, etc. Comes with the heart rate strap and transmitter. Yes, I'm pretty small--5'3 and now 120 lbs (I've put on a few in the last couple months!). So maybe that has to do with it too.…

Thanks. Excellent advice. Not surprisingly, my mom is a diabetic, and my dad has heart disease (and a couple of strokes under his belt). I try to educate her a little bit each time on better food choices (even bought her a few diabetic-friendly cookbooks), and every time it's like the first time! :) Bagels, white bread,…

I spin three times a week and recently started Insanity. Finishing up the third week. I love it. Do I do it every day? No. I can do it on the days I have an easy ride, or on weekends, or on days I'm feeling like a powerhouse. Recently I took it with me when we traveled and did it in our hotel room. You might not…

I'm currently not counting. I pretty much know to focus on quality now, and same as you said, eating when hungry, fueling after workouts, etc. Logging every meal and snack right now is just not worth the time for me. I do log my workouts, though. Gives me a good sense of what I'm burning. When I'm out or planning to eat…

Also, if you do your moves in quick succession with little rest in between, it's under circuit training.

Welcome! There are some great, supportive people here. Feel free to add me.

Agree fruit is a good choice, bananas being super easy to digest. More pre/post workout fuel ideas at the Get-Fit Guy page here: http://getfitguy.quickanddirtytips.com/what-to-eat-before-and-after-exercising.aspx

This is good to know. I'm waiting for my 30 Day Shred dvd to arrive any day now in the mail. Hope it's as good as everyone says it is!

Seeing some really good advice here. Here's my 2 cents: -Drink more water. Counterintuitive, but staying well hydrated means you'll retain less water. Bye bye bloat! -Look for lower sodium options. Food manufacturers are starting to realize what a huge problem this is, and often you can find lower sodium versions of things…

I got back recently from a trip like that, and boy did they feed us well! It's never an easy situation, but a couple of things might help: -Drink water throughout the day, more than you think you'll need. -Use the hotel fitness center. Or better yet, explore the city by taking an early morning walk or run. A lot of times…

I've read in Tim Ferriss's book, The Four Hour Body, that calorie cycling (or including what he calls a re-feeding day) can really give your metabolism a kick in the pants, not to mention keep you sane, as you have that day to look forward to. For me it helped break a plateau. And the Get Fit Guy podcast describes a little…

OK, if you have a minute, read this blog post by a really talented woman I know (and check out the rest of the blog for crazy weight loss inspiration!). The veggie dilemma is ironed out here better than I can ever say it. http://www.whoatemyblog.com/2011/05/guest-post-by-shaun-chavis.html

Agree with a lot of folks here--planning ahead and as much prep work ahead of time as you can. Also, when you find something you like that's filling and good for you, make a huge batch of it. I do this with lentil veggie soup. High fiber, high protein, good carbs. You can eat it for several days as part of a meal, or…

I am definitely a fan of the Thai Chopped Chicken Salad. Panera has been a little frustrating with things you'd think were healthy, but are ridiculously high in fat (check out the nutrition info for their creamy tomato soup, for example). But this one's a winner.

If when your food arrives the portions look gigantic or more than you know you need (highly likely), ask your server right away to bring you a to-go box. Put away half the food, and you've got lunch for tomorrow. Saw other lots of great advice on here about planning ahead (if you know you're going to splurge a bit, eat…

Looking decent, but five fewer pounds would be closer to the defined body I want.

Good to hear. For weeks I've been really restricting my carbs. I haven't gone Atkins or anything (still getting carbs mainly from fruits/veggies/beans). I still eat bread or rice or whatever, but in tiny amounts, and maybe once a day. But I'm consistently well below my daily carb goal. So I'm thinking maybe for the amount…

Greek yogurt! Add any of these: sliced fruit, walnuts, wheat germ, drizzle a little honey over it. YUM. Cottage cheese with or without fruit. (Breakstone's 2 percent, small curd is the way to go) A fruit smoothie. Eggs! Morningstar Farms spicy sausage patties. Fiber One cereal. Eggo low-fat Nutrigrain frozen waffle with…

You can add me.

If the sugar is coming from fruit or milk, that's not so bad. Those are naturally occurring sugars. I love the Nutrition Diva podcast. She talks here about how it's more important to cut down on added sugars. See the transcript or listen here:…

Get-Fit Guy is one of my favorite podcasts. There's an episode devoted to exactly this problem called "How to Get Off a Weight Loss Plateau". You can listen to it here (or read the transcript--don't worry, it's not long): http://getfitguy.quickanddirtytips.com/how-to-get-off-a-weight-loss-plateau.aspx Let us know how it…

When you can't wash it after a workout, give it a quick blow dry, then finish with a waterless shampoo to freshen it up a bit. You can usually find these at any chain drugstore.

Happens to all of us. First, 300 extra calories in the grand scheme of things isn't all that much. What you need to do now instead of wallowing in guilt and using that as an excuse to slip again, is to say, "OK, I went over a bit that day. No biggie." And pick up where you left off. Reset and get back to your plan. Good…

When you've worked muscles you haven't worked in forever, or you've pushed harder than you've pushed before, there's some normal tearing of the muscle fibers. That's not a bad thing. Your muscles repair themselves. But it's important that you build in some recovery days after something like that to give your muscles that…
