I have done Ab ripper X which has some intense moves but I don't think it will hurt your back...Pilates is the best way to improve back muscle.

Find an exercise you enjoy - I like pilates and dancing! commit to something for a week and you will be on your way! Good luck!

I own a tortuni ellipitical trainer. Much better than running on the treadmill - i can actually read while I train and I burn 100 cal per 10 mins. You can adjust the resistance and my husband does the bike trainer programs which is really hard - i stay with the manual.
