  • Oh, please. Just go home and take your judgmental attitudes with you. Why is it hard for you to perhaps consider the view that for that daughter and mother, it is them going hard?
  • Besides the "Just lift, don't do any cardio" people, the "gawd, I hate the gym, exercise outside with nature is sooo much better!" folks are annoying me. Running on the treadmill is plenty good cardio. That said... Don't rely on the treadmill to accurately tell you speed, distance--well, anything except the time you have…
  • When I run from my home, I have my mp3 player and just my house key. I just hold the key in my hand; the mp3 player in my pocket. I am normally a treadmill runner. When training for the half, I decided to run longer distances. I belong to a chain gym, so I would travel to gyms farther away from my place, stash my stuff in…
  • Where are these places with no people coughing? Yes, I have never seen a person cough at a park despite the fresh air.
  • Yeah, right. People read because it passes the time. If they didn't, they would not work out as long. That wouldn't help them, would it? Anyways, I read when I'm on the elliptical. I can't read when on the treadmill but I watch the tv.
  • My answer: "I'm not *trying* to lose weight. Just be healthier. If that results in me losing more weight, oh well."
  • But the solution is not to eat stuff you hate. Are there people who lost the weight (and maintained the loss) by eating stuff they didn't like because it's "healthy"?
  • You can have health *and* eat food you like. It's not one or the other. There's also mental health. I wouldn't be happy ingesting stuff I'm indifferent to.
  • I'm puzzled by people with weight issues *(unless it's one where one needs to gain weight) who have never found pleasure in food. If you didn't find pleasure in it, how did you eat too much of it? I would hate to eat stuff I don't enjoy. I drink coffee everyday. I will try out new coffeeshops all the time. It's one of the…
  • You have to come up with something other than "I'm on a diet." She wanted you to partake in this activity of eating munchies. You were inclined to drink some beers--she figured you would be okay with eating junk food too. If you chose something to eat with her on your own (like a bag of microwave popcorn), she would not…
  • No offence, but why did you order a spring roll at a sushi restaurant? Why not get actual sushi? Beyond the weight issues (and Japanese cuisine is healthier than most), if you don't like that type of food, couldn't you tell your SO that you didn't want to go because you don't like sushi? But generally, you kinda have to…
  • Do not tell them that you are trying to lose weight! Don't! Don't drink your calories. Drink water
  • I really dislike lifting too. I don't dislike cardio so I do cardio quite easily. Do you take cardio classes? If so, go to the gym an hour before the class and you can do weights. What else are you gonna do? The fact that people are supposed to lift before cardio is an added bonus. If you don't do cardio classes, then take…
  • I am currently on bad terms with the YMCA when I last visited a Y (in San Jose) and their YMCA does not provide guest day passes. WTH?!!? But I have had "overweight" trainers and some are bad and some are fantastic (there is one cycling instructor whose classes are always full). I have also had "fit" trainers and some are…
  • It's not your battle to fight. You can give your friend the options mentioned in this thread, but it's up to her. I would not appreciate someone I confided in going after the person who slighted me. I must confess that in all my time in the gym (almost 20 years), I have never been a victim or seen someone be a victim of…
  • Location is key. Location is important because our time is important. Related to that are parking and availability of equipment. Finding an empty parking space at a gym can be harder than losing weight. And if you have to wait a long time to use that elliptical, you might as well work out at a gym that is farther away from…
  • The day I had to stop PE was a great day. I don't recall any students gaining all this weight the year PE stopped being mandatory. If anything, PE hindered my weight. If I learned anything during my fitness/weight loss journey, it's that mandatory exercises SUCK. So, does trying to climb rope in front of everybody.
  • Maybe you're moving to Northern BC? Because it is cold. But if you're moving to, say, Vancouver or Victoria, then LOL! It's not that cold! Vancouver is a very mild climate and our community is quite active. Running/walking/biking the Seawall, hiking the Grouse Grind, and the Sun Run are some activities that many, many…
  • Yes. My eating may not be ideal (understatement!) but I will do everything in my power to get in my exercise (at least the cardio portion). If I am staying in a hotel, I will make sure they have a gym. But I will also make sure there is a nearby gym with a guest pass in case my hotel's gym sucks, they lied on their…
  • That is an excellent point. I don't even finish work until well past 6pm (and I workout after I finish work). What--I don't eat at all? Ya know, there might be a lot of studies that show that you shouldn't eat after a certain time for maximum fitness. The same about working out in the morning. I guess my dreams of going to…
  • I returned from a family reunion last week. I did not eat on plan. When my family all last saw me, it was the first time (for many of them, at least) at "new" weight. They were shocked, to say the least. Now, I feel they watch over me while I eat anything. I did not eat on plan, to put it bluntly. But I exercised everyday.…
  • I live in the birthplace of Lulu, but at least 80% of the people in my gym have some article of clothing with Lulu. And they work out as hard as I do in my cheap gym strip (if not more). I try to keep my exercise expenses to a bare minimum, so I don't have any of their clothes. But I like their shorts. The pockets with the…
  • Is there a reason why you want to exercise in the morning? As long as you exercise at some point in the day, who cares? I like to sleep, so I don't work out before work. I do it afterwards. On holidays or on the weekend, I like to exercise in the morning. But I don't wake up extra early to do so. I just wake up, and then…
  • This is my favourite thread. So much better than that "No Mayo" thread. Tomorrow, I leave for my family reunion / cousin's wedding. I was always the big relative during my childhood and adolescence. My older relatives *always* love to tell stories of me never wanting some Asian delicacy because I wanted a Big Mac instead.…
  • I always felt I was overweight during my entire childhood and adolescence but I recently was rifling through old family photographs and I must admit I was pretty darn adorable. I think my parents only ever took photos of me when I was experiencing a growth spurt. By tenth grade, I stopped growing (5 foot 6 inch male--ouch)…
  • I go to Steve Nash Fitness World in Vancouver, Canada. I pay 18 dollars per month. I have been a member for over 15 years. I am a satisfied client. Includes a lot of classes (not all, such as zumba and cycling, which is why I haven't done them). Good cardio equipment and weights. Parking is an issue. I also like it's a…
  • I am the same way. Don't even get me started when they add fruit to a dessert. HATE! For my fruit requirements, I basically only eat bananas and apples.
  • I'm a guy and I think it's generally easier for men to lose weight than women. One example, men don't get pregnant. I would imagine that could easily derail my weight loss goals. However, I think weight maintenance is about evenly hard for men and women.
  • I don't find the article all that depressing. Maintenance *is* hard. I can't count how many times I've been told that now that I've lost all the weight, I don't have to diet anymore, or one little candy bar, cheesecake, hamburger, etc won't hurt me, etc.
  • I still keep all my larger shorts and tshirts for working out, lounging around the home, doing chores, etc. Pants, dress shirts, etc. went to thrift store. But it was a slow process. Unfortunately, although I lost the weight, my wallet never got any bigger.
