  • Once per month, I go to a class with a friend. It's fun. I don't know why you can't make working out social. It's easier to be social in a gym setting than outdoors. Running side-by-side on treadmills is a lot easier to be social than running side-by-side outside, if one is faster than the other,
  • As a frequent exercise class participant, I have been instructed by people of all shapes and sizes. Some of the larger instructors have been extremely popular, so I would never make judgment based on appearance alone. I'm surprised people who actually take exercise classes would consider the instructor's appearance as…
  • Virtually every race I have entered have a "No Refunds" policy, so if you decide not to run it, it's not like you're gonna get your money back. You won't get a silly medal. Big whup. In the meantime, just continue your training. If you're up for the race, great. If not, great.
  • I enjoy treadmill *and* road running. Don't buy the idea that running on the treadmill is easier. If it's so darn easy, increase the speed or incline. As for the treadmill moving for you, I'm pretty sure if I stopped moving on the treadmill, I'd fall backward. Road running is different and if you haven't done it much, it…
  • I just did a Half in slightly under a 7:30 per mile pace. I do most of my weekday runs on a treadmill, and the average pace is almost 2 minutes over that. When I try to 7:30 on the treadmill, it feels like I am sprinting for my life. I actually believe this is the norm--people are more likely to run slower on a treadmill…
  • There are different stages of weight loss, esp. for those who have a lot of weight to lose. That first step can be really, really, really hard. There are a lot of emotional and physical barriers people have to go through just to start. Me running at my heaviest weight was a lot harder than me running at my current weight…
  • He is of a different generation, so I don't mind this when I encounter it. What I have noticed is the men who keep the faucet running *forever*. Such a waste of water! I never noticed this happening when I enter a washroom at a restaurant/store/cafe/library/airport. Just at the gym. As a guy, I don't know if women do this.
  • Must haves: 1. Price (no point in going if you can't afford the membership) 2. Parking availability (believe me, it SUCKS when there is no parking!) 3. Equipment availability (is there enough of it when the gym is crowded?) 4. Location (no matter how great a gym, a long commute will prevent you from going) 5. Hours 6.…
  • I started getting blisters on my toes too (after a few years of running), so I started vaselining my toes. It works! I now vaseline my entire foot!
  • I don't feel that way. Running outside in windy conditions will not cause a whole lotta sweat. Running on a treadmill at a lower speed for a lesser time will cause a whole lotta sweat. Sweat sucks. It causes me to replace earbuds all the time.
  • I love that less than 2% of the population in India is deemed obese (OMG!), but there are posters expressing no surprise at India's supposed obesity epidemic. 2%!
  • Fours years of maintenance. But this is not my first round of maintenance. I learned that you have to take it day by day. Be somewhat flexible. How I exercise and eat now is probably not going to be how I exercise and eat 50 years from now.
  • Now that I am in maintenance, I sweat just as much as, if not more, while exercising. I hate it--the biggest reason being I always have to replace my earbuds. But if I'm in a warm place doing not much of anything (i.e., on a sidewalk in the sun waiting for the bus), I won't sweat like I used to. And I think that's a good…
  • Pretty much every elite athlete has a coach. Are they using a quick fix?
  • If you're in maintenance, you realize that diligence will be a mainstay. That said, you also realize that comments of this nature are common and if you want them to stop or at least lessen, then certain acts on your part will have to take place. For instance.... If you need to log food, why do it when people are around you…
  • It's one thing judging internet people, but to judge people in real life by how often they run on a treadmill vs. outside? Hmm, weird. I run outside and on the treadmill. I don't need to use the weather, time restrictions and the like to justify why I run on the treadmill either. I like running on the treadmill. I also…
  • Use the portapotty before heading to the start. And then return to the lineup and use the portapotty again. Then head to the start.
  • Besides the hotel gym, I check out if there is a YMCA nearby. Most YMCA provide daypasses for a small fee (not all, though--looking at you, San Jose). If your own gym is part of IHRSA, then check out if other gyms are part of that program. If so, they will allow to use their gym for a discounted rate. I also check out…
  • Medals for completing a 5K is pretty rare. A medal for a 10K is more common, but not that common. Medals for a HM or FM is very common. I want to do a 5K with my parents and I want to find one that gives out medals. Medals just make for a better photo-op. But doing a 5K race is great. It gives you a base of how fast you…
  • If I run near home, I just carry my home key. If I run farther from home, I usually carry in my pocket (which has a zipper) my driver's licence, a credit card, and a twenty dollar bill. I will also carry my gym membership card (my usual route is starts and ends at my gym, where I can stuff all my belongings in the locker)…
  • If you're working out for 2+ hours every single day of your life, then you probably have goals besides "losing weight" or "getting fitter". And, yeah, then make the time. But if your goals are not as evolved, you don't need to work out that much. That said, regardless of the volume of your exercise regime, it is a time…
  • Go to your local running store and get fitted.
  • If there was a bomb in an office building, pretty much everyone would be running out of that building. If a person was running slower than a 10:00/mile pace but was trying to run as fast possible, I can't see myself describing that person as "jogging out of the building that has a bomb." To me, terms like "running",…
  • Most classes consist of participants of varying levels--from those who know what the next move will be before the instructor says anything to those who have never worked out ever and have no coordination whatsoever. Do whatever class you think would interest you. Regardless of what class is "better" for you, if you don't…
  • I think maintaining your weight the first time may be harder than losing weight. After you go up and down the scale over the years, when you are in "maintenance" mode again, it's easier to find the motivation because you can remember what happened the last time you "failed" to maintain. I think the hardest part is gaining…
  • I generally don't count calories as I tend to eat things over and over and over again. I only eat what I like and have never been much for variety anyway. At least during the week, my meals are pretty uniform. If I go to a restaurant on the weekend, I have general go-to meals for each type of cuisine. Going to house…
  • 1. How long have you been maintaining? 3rd time. This time I've been at it for 3.5 years. 2. Did you adjust your initial goal? As this was not my first time I lost a substantial amount of weight, I didn't "start" out with goals. I decided to eat less and exercise more at a level that I knew I could sustain. And weight was…
  • I have done four half marathons (a fifth in less than two weeks) and I am approaching the 1:40 mark. I do most of my runs on the treadmill. I enjoy my outdoor long runs (I don't just leave my home and run--I trek out to a place in the city where it's scenic and beautiful and inspiring). Who knows--maybe if I did more…
  • I have not noticed any increase in traffic when it comes to cardio machines or weights. I do see an increase when it comes to classes. During the summer, people go on holidays, entertain children who are not in school, workout in the outdoors, etc. In the fall, their schedules normalize and they return to the classes. At…
  • Ya know, it's not like people who never really had to deal with weight issues eat and exercise the exact. same. way. from their birth to their death. Just because you lost weight a certain way, doesn't mean you have to eat and exercise that way for the remainder of your life. Life changes and you have to adapt. I think the…
