  • That's because fat people are ignored and treated as invisible by the public.
  • Super Jock n Jill in the Green Lake area. Good service. They will do right by you.
  • It really depends on how much weight you originally needed/wanted to remove. If it was a substantial amount, exercise isn't that important. But when you get to the 25lbs or less stage, I think exercise becomes more important. Besides the issues of fitness and strength, exercise allows you to explore, manipulate and view…
  • I tend to run slower on the treadmill too. I find that when we run outdoors, we run "faster" unconsciously for short periods of time--like sprinting when running across the street before the light turns red, or to pass a runner in front of us, to avoid a scary dog, etc. We slow down during other parts of a run, but on…
  • Slower people at the starting line is *really* annoying and it means that I will pretty much forego any large 10K or less distances. I find that although there are still slower people at the starting line of a large half marathon, they are fewer in number and it doesn't impact my time as much because most of them I will…
  • I would be more interested in seeing how people *maintain* their weight loss without any sort of regular exercise regime. While diet is key, I find that I am more inclined to eat on plan as long as I exercise.
  • There are plenty of step, spin, bootcamp and cardio kick box classes in the present day. What's your point?
  • Running is certainly not the only way. I only started running after I lost the weight. I did a lot of classes--cardio kickbox, bootcamp and step, in particular.
  • In terms of what to wear before the race, if it is cold, I will wear a garbage bag over me. That way, I can easily remove it before the race starts and I don't have to worry about any missing clothes. A lot of people remove their clothes along the street knowing the clothes will go to some charity but I don't enough…
  • I have learned to not to workout just because I ate a little over plan and I wanted to quickly burn those evil extra calories off. What I was doing was equating exercise as punishment for eating too much. Those extra workouts did not improve my eating habits and I stopped exercising for extended periods of time due to…
  • Most people would traverse a specific distance faster by biking than by running. So, of course biking the same distance would result in fewer calories burned than had you run the distance. But if you run and bike for the same amount of *time* and at the same level of intensity, which would cause more calories to be burned?
  • The title of your thread doesn't help. It connotes incredulity and skepticism. Do you speak that way when you're just honestly curious...really? Anyways, I can't read while on the treadmill, not even on my cell. I get a headache. But, for sure, I will read my stack of magazines while on the elliptical.
  • I listen to music that I would listen to in other places (i.e., the car, my home, etc). If I like the music, I like the music. The tempo of a song doesn't determine whether it's good exercise music. I have completed workouts just listening to the same slow ballad on a repeat loop.
  • http://www.wynnlasvegas.com/Activities/FitnessCenters What's wrong with the hotel gym (plural--there are two!) that you have to pay for a gym membership?
  • The treadmill doesn't just immediately get to your speed. It takes about 15-30 seconds for it to reach your desired speed. I figure that's "enough" time to "warm up".
  • As a guy who does aerobics, I have enjoyed the few zumba classes I've done. But the success of zumba is a lot more dependent on the participants and instructor than other classes (i.e. cardio kickbox, step, bootcamp). If I were to get more guys to do aerobics, I would not have them do zumba first.
  • Whenever people say "it's okay to log anything as exercise if you describe your lifestyle as sedentary." I mean, what kind of world is it when a lifestyle described as "sedentary" involves never moving one muscle ever? Who actually fits this? And don't say "Lots of people!" because that is just not true.
  • I thought almost all races have the headphones "ban" for insurance purposes. I didn't think it was actually enforced. I always wear headphones. I will sometimes mute or pause the music when I pass a band or want to slap the hand of a child. But I like my music and I don't feel it negatively affects my experience of the…
  • For my half marathon training (done 2--my third is in a few days), I do most of my training on the treadmill. Ultimately, do what you want but I doubt you'll start running like a slug because you did a few runs on the treadmill.
  • When I run outside, my "I'm pushing it" pace is 8:30/mile. On a treadmill, my "I'm pushing it" pace is 9:00/mile. I'm always surprised by this because when I run outside, I feel so slow. Officially, I did a 10K a 6 weeks ago in just over 48 minutes. I finished a half marathon 3 weeks ago in 1:53, a time I was kinda…
  • I only ever eat bananas before I run. I haven't tried GUs or anything. I barely drink during my long runs. I try to drink enough water 2-3 hours before my long run and then go to the washroom a ton of times prior to my run. I love the half marathon distance. Long enough to make it a challenge but it doesn't beat you down…
  • Not rude at all. If the person is not getting a good enough workout, they should be able to leave. They are not bound to complete a group workout. That said, there is a polite of leaving early. Don't roll your eyes or huff and puff or exclaim "This class sucks!" That happened recently. Just leave without being a drama…
  • I would say my running history is about 3 years. During my weight loss journey (almost 20 years long), my exercises of choice tended to be classes (step and kickbox) and the elliptical. Then I bought my first place, which was a condo. The building had a gym. The elliptical machines sucked, so I started using the treadmill.…
  • My name is manhn1. I think marathon runners like Kara Goucher and Dylan Wykes are damn good looking. I see plenty of hot looking folks in my local marathon races.
  • You ran/walked a 5K a *year* before you did your first half marathon, though. You didn't do a half where 4 months prior you couldn't run half a mile. Running distances less than 13.1 miles takes much effort. A 10K is hardly a day at the beach.
  • I too prefer cardio over weights by a very large margin Do you take cardio classes? When I schedule a class, I get to the gym an hour beforehand so I can get my strength training done. When the day involves the treadmill or elliptical, it's easy to skip over strength training and just get on the cardio machine. With…
  • I have no real opinion whether you can run the entire length of a half marathon in a very short period of time. Good luck. I was already in pretty good shape, but did other types of cardio (ie. classes, elliptical) before I started running on a treadmill. It took me about 2 years of consistent running before I signed up…
  • When you do your "long" run, maybe try a different route. I find that when I try to run longer on the treadmill, for example, I just automatically want to finish at a certain point in time because I'm just used to stopping at that point. Same thing when I run outdoors. If I use the same route, once I hit a particular…
  • Portland, OR in May. And Vancouver, Canada in September. In 2014, I'm eyeing a half marathon in Oklahoma City.
  • I run alone but I would probably enjoy joining a running group of some sort. They would push me in a way that I don't do myself (doing hills, interval training, etc). But my schedule isn't flexible and I try to limit my money on exercise.
